The game is a literal Potemkins village. You seems to be unable to comprehend that scam can actually be a semi working product - just look at all the chinese fake iphones being sold for slightly lower price than originals - its basicaly the same as what SC is doing - having a cheap shallow product that costs insane money. And I am seeing shallow product : a 'huge city' that is actually 3 small hubs with minimum interactions and terrible NPC routines. A 'giant' planet with 5 crafted outposts and the rest is empty half assed generated barrens. Tens of ships that are fully unusable because the servers cant hold enough players to justify their huge interiors and multiple seats/turrets for one measly battle of 20+ players. Fauna flora might as well be just a 2d picture because thats how interactible it is. The game is absolute barebone of what it should be after 10 years of development and ridiculous amount of money spent...not to mention the migraine inducing bugginess that makes the game unplayable for more than 30 minutes..There's a reason the video is nothing but a bunch of 2 seconds clips...
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
As you always do, equating marketing and sales with product. Although when the product is your dreams, that's certainly easier.
As you always do, you don't look past the numbers because you don't actually play the game or know about it's development updates or how it compares with other space games in the market. If you did you'd easily understand that Star Citizen funding increase is tied to it's player base increase. But you're so adamant in hating a game you don't play that you prefer to die on that negative bias hill of yours and dream of a day that Star Citizen collapses. Keep dreaming.
I was an on the fence person with SC. I spent a long time thinking that it was going to shut down or that production would just stop. I have followed the game since the beginning and tried the free fly events and seen the game improve. In fact, it has improved enough that I bought it... just a small package but hey it is something.
If this game is a fraud, then it is an absolute one for history books.

I don't think the beginner package of $35-45 is that bad. Not a huge risk really. Just be prepared for years of dithering decisions, incomplete game loops, and glacial movement towards vitally important basic game functions.
Stuff is getting done, as even Chris Roberts great skills at micromanagement can't stop 700 people from getting something done.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

We'll keep playing
I look at history. When I see it repeating, with lessons not learned, it brings up the headpalm conclusion.
Plus, delaying a single player game for many years because of quasi-MMO issues. That sure makes sense.
Let me know when they manage server meshing and progression retention. Ten years in and counting.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
It will be proven a scam the day the lights go out.
end of story imho
But a scam would mean there is no product at all, and there is already a product... they are working on it... slowly yes, but they ARE working on it. Hell this is the game I have wanted since I played Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter on the Xbox... so I am willing to wait, I am even having fun with the Alpha
If the lights go out and servers are shut off then it will have failed, but I wouldn't say it was a scam as they were trying to make a game.
If you are happy with the value received for the amount of money you put in, case closed then.
But just don't go buying an 890 Jump, I hear those luxury liners are a total scam.

In both cases, it would depend on why the lights went out.
I'm most likely to die from old age, an accident or a medical issue, odds get better each and every day that I will end up dying of old age.
It's basically the opposite for SC
I have foreseen your death.
It involves a scandal at a Las Vegas casino, 100 kilos of missing Brazilian cocaine, and a busload of cheerleaders.
Feel bad for you mortals

Until SC contain fully fledged server meshing as they present it - which I consider undoable - I will consider it an utter fail that is borderline scam
Why?
Because servers being unable to hold at least 50 v 50 players for a rather small capital ship battles makes half the ships they are selling for insane money useless jpegs assets
If they implement some kind of solar system server instances in few years because the server meshing tech doesnt work - it means that the idiotic management has been lying for almost a decade
Also no amount of server mumbo jumbo is going to fix 300ms between europe and australia - making any battle between australian players against european players undoable even on a glorified 1 server for all - this tells you how this entire thing is thought through...
In JT 2.0 last night (a game-wide event) we had most of the server doing pvp. I lost count of the number of ships we had but it was well over 40 with the biggest ships currently in-game being there as well.
There was ground combat (infantry and armor) as well as ships dogfighting, bombers even up to orbital dogfighting.
The point being whatever CIG is doing, they are taking steps in the right direction. More and more people are showing up to these events and that helps CIG identify where the issues are taking place.
The next event will be 9 tails. With the popularity of JT 2.0 I am hoping 9 tails is even bigger this time.
Oh also, I play on any server I can (I live in Hawaii) and the latency has not been so bad (in the last 2 - 3 months) on any server I could not play. This includes Euro. Again, steps in the right direction.
I wanna say, I am not trying to change anyone's mind about buying into the game. It is an Alpha and all that comes with that can be pretty frustrating.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

But the marketing is sheer genius. Gonna be one for the business text books!
