Why isn't New World a choice for best mmo in 2021? It's not like a AAA mmo gets released every year. Also, why not lead with the question "Best mmo of 2021", instead of hiding it right down at the bottom of the list? Why the seemingly random choices for "most improved mmo? Why did you choose to put BR at the top of the list? Why rpgs are not included in best indie game?

I can't see how New World could be in with a shot for best MMO, NW could get that and most improved next year mind you. The order of the list is not that good I agree, but most improved is an important category. I think RPGs should be separate from Indie, do you mean also have a Indie RPG category, not quite sure what the problem is there?
Out of that list of seven mmos I would put NW in the top three. I am not sure that you have even played the game - or any game for that matter. You seem a nice enough fellow but from what I can gather you just base your opinion on reviews and forum posts.
My comment about "most improved" is regarding the seemingly random choices for the games on it, the category itself is fine. An RPG can be an indie game and vice-versa. I see no reason why a game couldn't be on both lists, and win both categories if it is good enough.
Odds are good most people who vote in these polls won't have necessarily played every candidate and do in fact at times support a game based on what they've read rather than experienced.
NW was not a great candidate this year as it launched very late in the year and let's face it, had a bunch of inexcusable and avoidable issues considering the large financial backing behind it.
Didn't help that most every fix was two steps forward and one step back. (At least)
Perhaps next year it will be a worthy contender, but leaving off of this year's list was almost a mercy really, as a 5/10 game is not really better than a "none of the above" vote.
The parallels between NW and FO76's release are uncannily similar, in terms of coding issues, incomplete content and player reaction.
I think some Amazon exec even made an obtuse "it just works" type comment at one point, channeling the ghost of Todd H.
I'm sure no one nominated FO76 for any awards the year it released except maybe for a "razzy" of some sor.
I say all of this as someone who loves the FO76 franchise so much I overlooked many of it's faults, (still do) same as NW's defenders have done recently.

I am sure you can make up 1001 excuses for it, but the fact of the matter is that games like Elyon, Phantasy Star Online 2, Swords of Legends Online, and Lord of the Rings Online hardly made a blimp on the radar compared to NW - and some of them also launched late in the year and/or got mixed or bad reviews.
Leaving out the most popular new mmorpg to launch in 2021 from the list of choices of "which was the best mmo" and having these other trash games on this list is just ridiculous.

It's just no longer good journalism when the writers aren't neutral. As I said, this site lost quality drastically, notably after the departure of Bill's team.

Most improved is a very tricky concept, I rarely vote for that one myself, but I think it is important it is there, in fact NW might win it next year. As to the choices they made being seeming random maybe so, I often think you get that in awards ceremonies which all seem to want to proliferate more and more awards.
I agree about the RPG's, I guess they would say you can pick 'other' under Best Indie and select your RPG. But when you consider the best thing in my eyes indie has given us is RPG's it does look odd.
I agree that it is ludicrous to put NW as Best Overall MMORPG or New MMORPG...
You don't pass off /drive away 90% of your players < 3 months... and then get an award just for being the new kid on the block.
The NW review on this site gave it a 6.5 and many in the comments thought that was a fair rating.
The problem is that such a vote should not be about the opinion of a writer about a product. No way New World would have won, but it should have been listed.

We all post on games here we do not play, I don't think I am alone in that. Just for you I looked back at my posts and found out that about 6 posts ago I was talking about Elder Scrolls and Dune games which I have played extensively.
Also I do think we should give more weight to those who are playing, but that's a double edged sword, you can get to wrapped up in the trees to see the wood as it were.
I think my take on New World has been quite balanced, I do think it will improve and we may even get a game worthy of Best MMO next year, but they do need to do a lot of work.

I have noticed some posters have lists of what they have played in their signature, like you I think that's a bit much. But you are asking a perfectly fair question.
I should mention I am quite strict in what I think of as a MMORPG, so some games I have played like dabbling in Fortnite won't get a mention. I started in MUD's an Amber one but I cannot remember which. My first MMORPG was Underlight I joined in 99/00, which is still active I think. Then though the exact order is tricky: Asherons Call, DAOC, AO, WoW, EQ2, CoH, Lotro, CO, AoC, DCUO, WO, ESO, TSW, BDO. There may be some others, but that's about it.
I am trying to find a new MMO home, I will not count failed attempts, like having a look at SWL this year (still a possibility)) as I never really stayed in TSW for as long as I would have liked for guild reasons. NW is for many of us possibly our last, best hope; I don't see any other AAA MMOs coming out soon and I may be too old in ten years time to spend as much time in a MMO as I want too! That's why I am hoping for improvement in the game next year to a point where I would play.

Wait, wut? Been my experience the older people get, the more time they have to play.
The guild I helped found in ESO a few months back is growing in leaps and bounds, with a good portion of the membership being in the retirement age category.
Some of these folks play like 6 or more hours a day, even a few nut jobs that skip sleeping some nights, but we have those type of all ages.
Yet we advertise ourselves as a guild for casual players. Our recruiting message starts out along the lines of, "Tired of chasing fire trucks, wondering what the big hurry is everyone else is rushing too?"
Getting a large number of WOW refugees the past month, who apparently are looking for a less stressful yet still somewhat serious environment.
We're now running all levels of content including most veteran dungeons (not the level 8-10 dlcs) and lower to mid level trials.
We also have world boss and fishing nights, public dungeon crawls and regularly run lower level character through leveling runs to get the quickly up to level 50, CP 160.

So spending an evening playing a MMO might be a bit much, my recent foray into R6S showed me I felt like a relax after all evening sessions. I did not used to be that way.
I have repeatedly said I have not played NW and am basing my opinion on posts and what mates say. Your idea I may have never played a game did raise an eyebrow, hopefully what I have said did not hit a nerve.
I know. I said that because I cannot recall a comment you have made about a game you have actually played.
Cool, have you played any mmos extensively? Some people here apart from yourself do post their opinions on mmos they have never played, but they also often mention what mmos they have played - I have read a lot of your posts but I can't recall you talking about your experience/impressions/thoughts on an mmo that you have actually played. I may have just missed it though since you post a lot.
Thanks Scott, I honestly had the impression that you just commented on games/mmos without ever really playing them!

I am keeping an eye on that one but time zone differences are one reason I never even looked at the MMORPG guild or trying to team up with posters on here. If NW had been put in the list for Best MMO we would have had complaints about that. It could easily be in the running next year mind you.
