If China wants to or eventually ends up completely banning Steam or Western games then that's their business. I'm not sure why Westerners even care.
The original intent of the thread was hoping to discuss how such a limited market in China might affect what audiences publishers are gunning for.

I.e. Tencent buying up western studios could help them blunt the effects of a limited Chinese market where they struggle to even get a title approved for sale.
That's a fair question but I didn't get that from the OP at all. Tencent seems like as reasonable publisher as any and I also agree that market and demographic diversification can help them survive adverse conditions in some markets.

Their struggles in China don't mean much to me just like EA in some European countries with their surprise mechanics.

Since I'm a US citizen I do feel that entertainment industry revenue generation should be much more regulated specifically with regard to blind box/loot crates and RNG rewards. Specifically I feel all odds of obtaining chase items (rare drops) should be clearly published with an estimate of the median and average costs to obtain such items whether that method is through cash shops or subscriptions.

The US already has fairly stringent content labeling, but I'm not opposed to clarity improvements or tightening access for minors to adult content.

While I'm not a fan of how China regulates its business or citizens, I think we in the US have our own social and political problems to address before we start worrying about others first. You know, get the board out of our own eye before trying to remove the splinter from others'.
It’s nice to hear your perspective. It’s always nice to hear your perspective.

Politics are involved in every single decision a government make’s. The number one goal for any perceived, current or future threat to a government like the one that the Chinese have is to have 100% control of the situation. The Chinese government doesn’t want the West to have any kind of influence over its citizens. Communist Governments are paranoid about things that are popular unless they belong to the Government.

That imho is what this is all about.

    FTFY...

As someone who grew up under first, a US-friendly fascist dictatorship followed by by a US-unfriendly communist dictatorship I can tell you that dictatorships suck regardless of their stripe. They're the same picture.

It's also why I have a pretty good grasp of what living without freedoms really is like. It's not the theoretical thing some who have never experienced it first hand vicariously imagine it to be.

It's why I get ultra annoyed when freedom is trivialized by applying it to petty concerns such as people's right to be an asshole in public forums :)

I think there has been more than enough politics here, and we do have a rule that tries to steer us clear of that.
All conversations can be good ones, it all depends on ones the behavior and whether one has any kind of self control.

All decisions from governments are political, we can debate on the reasons ;)
That's still political as I am sure you realise. I don't think I have seen the word China on these forums in a post that was not political and I have done them myself. So not pretending I am some sort off saint here, just this time I zipped it.
    Merry Christmas Scott :)

I hope your holidays are going wonderfully. I can always count on you to give me a smile and bring me some cheer, your a good soul.

I mentioned China earlier in the thread and my later responses I believe are related, like the end of this one. ;)

China is moving towards 100% self sufficiency +

China has an amazing history and self sufficiency has always played a big part.

The word Apathy again applies here. The general public is too lazy to even care, pick your side and dig in. Let somebody else do all the research for you, you just have to take them at their word.

Personally, I've had a lot of experiences that taught me to be wary of people giving me their word.

From ALL sides of an argument :)

("MY experts are right and YOURS are wrong!")
Not everything is an argument. Sometimes all sides are correct. Usually things occur for a multitude of reasons.

I’m of the opinion that if I have a problem, the first thing I do is to have a look in the mirror and think on it.

I enjoy hearing opinions and perspectives. Sometimes they can have a positive effect on my own.

Most labeling is done by publishers to garner public trust. Even though most censorship is done by private companies, many people think there are laws in place to enforce them. The only censorship by a public institution is for over the air content.

"The Languages of Pao" is a book by Jack Vance back in the '50'a about the use of constructed language to influence the worldview of its speakers.   Apparantly based on the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis,  it holds that people's worldviews or even cognition are heavily influenced by the structure of their language.

In this context, the ruling party in China is trying to gain control over various conceptual ideas and frameworks, and essentially ban things that don't fit them.  Usually while trying to promote an indigenous, 'proper' version, more easily molded to their preference.

It works, as China is capable of playing a long game, and in the West we'd sell our grandmothers for a quarter's profits.

I'm curious about this. If I remember correctly, comic books had a "comic book code", but it was self appointed, not the government's intervention.

Aren't movies regulated with G, PG, PG 17, R, X, XXX? Or is this another self-appointed "measure?"

Are music CDs "required" to have labels for bad language? Or is this another self-appointed thing?

Some video games are labelled. "Mature" is one I recall when a "mainstream IP" labelled itself as such. Is this another self-appointed labeling practice?

I've never taken the time look into these forms of labeling, so am curious how far off I am :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

actually if you bothered to read the article you would see its the core of the topic:

"The move comes as a surprise, but fits with the pattern of the Chinese government's actions around video games in the past 12 months. Fortnite was shut down in China on November 15 this year. Children were limited to three hours of gaming a week, and cryptocurrency was banned. In order for new games to be allowed to be developed, they had to be free of several elements thought to be anti-Chinese, including the presence of "effeminate men". Two months after the restrictions, it was reported that not a single game had been approved."

The Chinese feel that feminizing men is a bad thing and I agree with them. They know whats up, you dont.
I, too, love to cheer on heavy-handed censorship by an authoritarian state that's created the closest thing we've seen to concentration camps (targeting largely Uyghurs) since Nazi Germany.

    What could go wrong?

    You sound so very intelligent!

I think people should watch some of that old WW2 footage to see what the concentration camps were all about.

Pretty horrendous stuff that those young 20 something GI's walked up to. I'm kind of scared now, that those eyewitnesses are pretty much no longer with us.

I sometimes wonder if maybe they sacrificed themselves for nothing.

When I do, I feel shame.

I said and claimed Egyptians were black on steam and I added sources.

I have been banned from the steam assassin creed community and the entire steam was racist and still is racist today.

I was also harassed for saying Hannibal was black

Jesus might have been black or brown
    moors were black
    ancient Hebrews were black

in fact I have cyberstalked from youtube many people witnessed it on steam
