Meanwhile, you can still buy the game so that'll make for an interesting "new player experience."
Seems like a pretty drastic step to take just to combat bots. I'd think you are better off letting bots run, while working on a solution, as opposed to impacting new players that might be purchasing the game. Guess it depends on the level of harm being attributed to the bots...

First, indeed sales are not temporarily disabled, so there's that.
Second, one may wonder how many of those "peak/concurrent users" shown on steamdb and the likes are actually real players?

I never heard of devs doing THAT before..... has this ever happened in other games?
Not certain but didn't FFXIV do that before? Or was that just sales....
Yeah they did. Just last fall, but that was a volume thing for them. This is something different - probably related to some new creative economic shenanigans by players.

Yawn just an average day in new world let the refund spam frenzy and card stops begin
Just shows the brilliance of the Star Citizen business model. No refunds. I wonder how much Amazon took in and then gave back? Millions? Hundreds of millions?
At some point, they'll do a full wipe of the database to clean up after the many duping bugs and other catastrophes. That will make everyone start over from scratch. And then the economy will be ruined by another duping bug a week later.
The optics of this is very poor with them not disabling sales as well. People will be pretty much buying a game they can't play and generate more negativity.

Two things:
`1. ff14 only locked the servers to certain high pop servers like Balmung. You could make a new character, but you had to time it correctly. They also added server visiting, so even if you were on a different server you could play fully on said locked server.
2. Recently they only disabled selling the game, not making new characters as a result of too much winning.

No this was just recently because they had too many people playing with the release of the Endwalker expansion and the servers couldn't handle it. https://www.ign.com/articles/final-fantasy-14-sales-stopped-endwalker

No, they really won't.
People are creating characters, spamming messages of the likes of this
"buy gold 1000=1USD newworldcoins.com code: NW"
then they log out, rinse and repeat with a new character
why globally? well that message showed up for me multiple times on an AP server. So it's everywhere.
