Good news about NFTs

fineflufffinefluff Member RarePosts: 561
One of the largest indie game platforms put out a series of tweets calling NFTs a scam. Moreover, a survey of game developers at GDC, one of the largest game developer conferences, indicated that over 70% of developers are not interested in NFTs or even accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment.

There is still hope for the future of gaming! 😎

We don't want it. Regular game currencies and game use items are enough to manage without having to worry about it. Plus it just opens players up to more account theft.

I think that's kind of a silly thing to say though. Seeing as how the blockchain and NFT games in development right now that may actually be worth playing are not from established developers and are instead from new studios.

It's still funny to this day to see how many developers have said or continue to say that their game will use only one monetization model, until they flip on it.

All it takes is one mainstream success. It doesn't even have to be overwhelmingly successful. That's how every single trend in gaming has started.

Remember WoW? That little gem stuck us on a path of 10 years of themepark MMOs.

Fortnite exploded and everybody had to have a battle royale, and we're only now on the other side of it.

When games began going free to play, suddenly the majority of MMOs had to have some kind of free 2 play option to stay profitable. Nearly every single game now goes that route.

Cash shops, buy2play, ..hell even lifetime subs where they said players wouldn't have to pay for xpacs... everything has flipped to something else over time, even if you are "assured" that it won't.

    That is the industry.

I think the bigger problem is not that they are scams inherently, but they have a high probability to become scams.

In an honest world NFTs may work. Yet if you think about it, in an honest world no one would use any copyrighted media without expressed permission.

Okay, but was there similarly strong opposition from the players and the developers?

    Absolutely.

You think developers launch with a particular monetization model for no reason?  Half the design decision of an MMO is the way they monetize it. They don't swap because they want to. They do it out of desperation.

You think that will change if there's an NFT game out there outearning every other game on the market?

I don't think NFT will become as popular as you think. In the near future I think it will be forgotten about.

    NFTs are a 100% scam.

Even the name is a lie. They arent unique at all. You can create multiple NFTs for the same artwork, easy.

Developers had concerns about F2P, we saw few voice such concerns as you rarely see any developer voice any concerns about the industry they are in. I can remember a report about developers being concerned at the direction gaming would go in after Farmville was a huge success, don't think that stopped those type of games either did it?

They seem quite ready to tell us about their position on everything from equality issues to the Ukraine but never anything controversial in their own backyard. :)

I don't see it as desperation, sometimes they believe that to stay profitable they must make a change to the revenue strategy, others will be looking at that NFT MMO that is second most played on Steam and £$ signs will be filling their eyes.

But this is a hopeful development, we will have to see if it gathers pace.

    NFTs are unique tokens.

But only the token is unique, it does not make anything else unique. So you could have a million unique NFTs that all work as access tokens to the same piece of art.

IT depends....The younger gamers seem to really be into it...I remember when Pokemon first arrived on the scene....I thought it was pretty silly...Look at where it is today.....

But isn't it more about some unique number?

I would not buy an NFT unless mine is # 42.

Blockchain, in general, has been having a bad PR month.  A few of the top programmers in the space have been outright bailing on the whole technology.  It's sinking in that this was all a scam where the rich profit at the very beginning and leave 'investors' holding the bag.

I'm not poo pooing the tech.  You just can't have a currency that doesn't allow for any scam or manipulation recourse outside of hard forks and then trust that everyone can be cool.  Nobody can be cool.

If history is any teacher: They'll be against it until they aren't. They'll avoid implementing it until they figure out how to make the most money from it. NFTs may not take over, but they'll coexist as another consideration when looking at a game.

I don't generally have a favorable view of NFTs at this time, but it would be short sighted to say there aren't suitable uses that will emerge. Even with my limited imagination on the topic, TCGs seem like a natural fit. Someone more invested will likely come up with some compelling use case that will make sense to a larger audience.

Remember that guy that sold his art: Banana taped to a wall...  for 6 figures?
Well, now he could sell the NFT of that for even more!  because while the Banana eventually decayed, the NFT is forever!

    What a deal!

I liked where NFTs were taking some gaming aspects. Selling on cash shop items to retrieve some of that money spent... but it occurs to me you don't need an NFT system to have something like that anyway.

On another note, haven't seen bcbully stalking these forums for a bit. I'd always expect to see them in an NFT thread.

You can count on for profit companies to maximize their profits. NFTs won't be added en masse until they are collectively certain their profits will be greater with than without. Once that point is reached, good luck finding something without them.

I used to not care about NFTs until Snoop Dog announced his line of NFTs using Cardano.
