Illuvium was one that bcbully talked about, right? It was like betting with ETH or something.
Star Atlas I can see going two ways, either they try to copy EVE or they try to copy Star Citizen. Probably EVE. I don't think it has the capacity to be better than EVE though, and since it uses its own blockchain, it'll be both volatile and more open to manipulation.
No... just no. Star Atlas is very far from what the video shows. Right now it's primarily a trading game and not much else. It's mostly speculative, and thinking that it's somehow a top contender for 2022 ... let's put it this way... they released a pre-alpha "gameplay trailer" in december, and it made Star Citizen look feature complete.
Illuvium is not really an MMO, and not really a real game. The battle system follows a lot of the other auto battlers. I don't anticipate a good core loop on this one, and it runs on ethereum, even with immutable X, they show gas prices in gwei on their website - so gas is going to be around 30 - 40 USD... more than most people pay for a buy 2 play game to begin with.
If you want a starship game like EVE look at Infinite Fleet. It's an MMO game that you can actually play now (currently in an early access state) and they have a very good economy that is fairly easy to get into. They aren't connected to mainnet afaik, so you won't see ships for sale on opensea. I think you need to buy a ship to get in, but the ships are like 40 bucks, and you earn ships in game (though they aren't all NFTs).
There are others, but nothing playable that is actually worthwhile right now. Most are in development.
The only game I've only really given much time to is skyweaver which is a card game that's really player friendly, and blankos block party, which I can only stand for short periods of time, but is still probably the best game with NFTs I've seen. I did give axie a shot, but with the axie market crash I can't really tell if it's stupid or smart to get invested in it right now. I sold off the axies I had and I'm holding my SLP and AXS until the market comes back up so I at least break even. Not the kind of game or economy that I want to be a part of.
I don't think it is difficult to get fooled here, this is a new dawn in gaming and there are plenty of people out there who will happily take your money and scam you. But this one does not seem to be a scam, just that the "game" is more like "CC investment and trading" software with a some gamer frills.
Thing about videos like this on tiktok is that most of them are complete horsepoop. For every one you see you need to either look into yourself (like Maskedweasel apparently did) or watch a video debunking the misinformation.

Cryptocurrency and gaming don't really have much crossover.
I mean, its not like dollars or pounds has much influence over the contents of a game, so paying for a game using crypto seems like something valid for the future.
Integrating money more closely with gameplay - whether that be minting characters using crypto, pay-2-win advantages or whatever - is a proven recipe for failure in the west.
Actual pay-2-earn games (not the pay-2-speculate games currently being developed) could open up an interesting future. It just requires designing gameplay that also solves some sort of real world problem, so that playing the game has value to someone else.
For example, cryptocurrencies require every transaction to be verified by someone, what if that verification process could be completed by killing an enemy in game? That way, killing stuff would earn you a small payment for each success.
Or, there are websites out there that crowdsource work from the public by asking them to identify what is contained within the image. What if healing in a game involved looking at actual X-Rays of patients and pointing out fractures and lumps? If 100 players look at the same x-ray and 50% of them point out the same thing, then when a real doctor gets to look at it they will save a bit of time?
I can definitely see cryptocurrency being a bigger thing in the future. As the process of globalisation continues, a generally accepted global currency makes sense. Having that global currency be a digital currency, especially a cryptocurrency that isn't controlled by a single government or corporation, makes sense to me. I don't think any of the digital currencies we have right now are there yet, but give it another 10-20 years and I think we'll get there.
I can also see a valid future for blockchain technology within games. I mean, blockchain is just another type of database, with some advantages and some disadvantages over traditional databases. If a gaming studio can make genuine use of those advantages, then why wouldn't they use it?
