Board Games!

What kind of boardgames do you play?

What are your favorites?

The first 2 that come to my mind are 2 strategy/war games. War of the Ring (Boardgame Geek link) and Game of Thrones (Boardgame Geek link). Both are 2nd editions. I first played War of the Ring from SSI thanks to my sister's purchase of the game.

Another game I enjoyed a lot in high school was Starfleet Command (Boardgame Geek link) was a fun space (3D battles) combat simulator.

I also like some simpler, quicker games, too. Many variations of the Fluxx (Boardgame Geek link) card game is always fun and good for a quick game or three :)

Puerto Rico (Boardgame Geek link) is another game my friends and I enjoy playing.

Let's hear about others boardgame fun :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

The wife and I enjoy playing the Firefly board game as well as Ticket to Ride. Enjoyed Settlers of Catan but got burned out on it. My all time favorite was the old Civilization boardgame from Avalon Hill. Lots of good memories playing that one back in the day.

Im a fan of deck builders, rpg and some light strat/war games

Everdell is damn awesome. One of me and the wifes favorites along with Scythe. I just got the Twisted Fables Epic Collection and we have 5 or 6 games down so far. Awesome two player game and the art is amazing. Little Mermaid playmat.... schwing!

Recently painted Zombicide season 1 and finally got it to the table. Also fun if you like co-op.

If you like JRPG's and huge ganes check out Middara Unintentional Malum.

I've been playing Aliens recently, based on the second Alien movie.

Main thing I like is the miniatures, Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and the others look great and were fun to paint, plus there are 16 figures for the aliens. No face hugger miniatures though.

Gameplay is exceedingly complex, or so it seems, and I've definitely mis-read something. 3 attempts and haven't been able to complete level 1 yet!!! Shooting a gun requires you to discard a card from a pile, but the pile is really small. Given that on some turns I've had 13 aliens spawn in, i just keep running out of ammo and then dying.

I'm guessing the face hugger miniatures were choking hazards.  B)

In college, I had an absolute blast with Cosmic Encounter!  It was the favorite casual game in gaming groups -- fast, funny, and fun.  Toss in a couple of expansions, and it would tie a room full of rules lawyers in knots trying to determine what happened when.  That was the other half of the fun.  It engaged everyone.

    Chess.

Outside CCG and Table Top Wargames like Warhammer 40K, the only Board Game I play is Chess.

My favorite one is "Age of Gods". I already mentioned it somewhere in these forums...

You are a god (like the other players). There are various fantasy races on the board (classic stuff: orcs, human, elves, centaurs, etc). During your turn you can use any race to attack any other.

Progressively during the game, the races are secretly attributed to the players.

This game mechanic makes it a great bluff-based game. Nothing prevents you to play with the races somebody else (or nodody else) owns. I like for example to expand a race that I don't own, spending a lot of resources (cards) in the process to force the other players to be like :

    - he is bluffing
    - yes he is bluffing
*the orcs have 10 territories now*
    - what if he was not bluffing?
    - We cannot let the orc menace left unchecked!
    *orc extermination in process*

During this time my elves are secure...

    Or

    - the pirates are not distibuted yet, let's buff the pirates!
    - Yes, you are right, nobody owns them yet, let's empower them even more!
*the pirates destroy all the races that are near their coast and even manage to make a breakthrough to the center of the map!*
*The pirates are distributed now. Nobody knows who has them!*
*Weird suspicious looks around the table...*

This game is theoretically played up to 5 players, but it is better played at 3 or 4 players so all the races are not distributed and some belong to nobody (allowing to take more risks and funny bluffs).

Cool responses! I saw a few games I've played and many more I have never heard of :)

Fist of all, I have to address:

This is a good one. I was laughing as I've used that, too, but aimed at "bored meetings" in business. Maybe they play "bored games" while in "bored meetings?" LOL

This had me laughing, too. If the "face hugger" lasts long enough, do they pop out of the kids' chest? LOL The game DOES sound fun, though. Miniatures are a plus for me.

Cosmic Encounters was a game I played only a few times. My gaming friends found it while in college :)

That Firefly game intrigues me! I'll looking that one up :)

One game that my friend who owned the game had to twist everyone's arms to play was Twilight Imperium, an interstellar space conquest game. We never finished a game in one sitting. Most took a long weekend, otherwise whoever hosted had to leave the game out until we gathered again :D

I like Pandemic, its a cooperative game where all the players work together to beat the board game.

I like these types of games because it keeps arguments to a minimum and fosters cooperation.  In other games my kids used to be so competitive it would sometimes cause unneeded friction.

I've played a couple of times, way back when. I thought I may have heard/read that Pandemic had to make "some changes" after Covid-19 hit.

    That's a cool cooperative game, though :)

The last thing I played was Epic Spell Wars of Battle Wizards - a kind of complicated Munchkin.

I also like detective games like Cluedo and Arkham Horror. But they give me a headache.
