Originally posted by Jackdog I have a friend who loves Saga of Ryzom and keeps predicting that any day everyone bored with WoW is going to discover what a great game SoR is. Every game has it's fanbois, I used to be one for this game. Now I am more of a casual observer.
Actually bud, your friend who likes Saga of Ryzom isn't that crazy. IMO Saga is a better game then is WoW. It doesn't have near the populations, but regardless, it is very well produced and is an mmo oozing quality out of every seam. It is nothing at all like "Mourning" which oozed nothing but poop and bad coding out of every seam. And you're friend may not be so far off with his prediction. I have played SoR and WoW, and play neither currently due to real life and time constraints... but when countless players become bored of WoW after its super fast leveling, they may indeed look for something with just as pretty graphics and a deeper mmo to delve into. SoR is a beautiful game, and with its ultra-awesome looking upcoming expansion "Ring of Ryzom" which let players own and build their own part of the world.... anything is possible.

I gave it a shot on the free trial a while back and it did nothing for me. Of course I did not like WoW after 3 weeks and burned out on EQII after about 4 months so maybe it is just me. Fact is last game I could play more than 3 or 4 months was DAoC which was why I was hoping DnL would be good. I would love to see a goood RvR game make it big.

Sorry Ferco, but my reading of the recent Devchat is exactly the same as Shae's:

We always said that the final goal of DnL was to allow players to put a hand on the game, to have complete freedom, and to be part of the construction of Ganareth. What the devs call "faithful", I interpret as the venture capital funding the game coming to an end and they need to start making a profit and quick. Did you notice how they spin asking the community to pay for beta as rewarding the "faithful" of the D&L community. Yep, you're now minimum wage QA's!
Jesus! I've become even more cynical on ruminating over this topic overnight.
Only way to find out how complete the game really is is to play it in November 2005. I believe that the developers are smart enough to know what happens if the game is released with very little content.
Like others, I'm sceptical of the claims of developers and reserve my scepticism until Gold - even then, 6 months down the line to allow the game to settle. You would hope that the developers would not be myopic and complete ignore recent MMOG development, but how many times now have we seen the SAME mistakes happening?
Like Jackdog, Darquenblade (apologies if that is a misspelling) and Shae, I'm not being negative simply for a desire to see the game fall flat on its face, more expressing my deep reservations because the current vision seems to be a determined effort to ensure that the game does fall flat on its face. Most of the community will look upon this as a Pay-to Play beta. Claiming to reward the faithful will not wash. The faithful are the ones who have supported the development of the game from its inception; who have contributed to the forums; who have suggested and discussed ideas to further the development of the game. Asking the community to financially support the game for 6 months until release (bearing in mind this is a commercial product - not a charity) is taking the piss.
I would like to share your sunny optimism, Ferco, but the overwhelming evidence of previous under-developed MMOGs rushed towards Gold release does not fill me with confidence.
Oh well, time to hit Yahoo Personals and date some Asian honeys until Vanguard's release.

"If you think I'm plucky and scrappy and all I need is love, you're in way over your head. I don't have a heart of gold or get nice. There are a lot nicer people coming up. We call them losers."
"Now I know that Mourning is such a great game and all that they currently don't even have a forum board for you, but please spare us your non-stop fanboyism over a dead, hopeless mmo that likely won't ever make a wart on the butt of any part of DnL."
DnL already "IS" a wart. LOL
your comments are funny considering DnL doesn't even have a website online right now now and announced a PAID BETA..?????????????????????
hmm ya.. good luck.
sorry to break the news to ya - but DnL is now doing the EXACT SAME THING that Mourning did before launch and we know how that turned out. hah
DnL is broke and dead with no additional capitol or investors and thats why it's launching.
Ok to start off if you dont like a mmorpg then dont buy it, its that simple no need to trash it every 5 seconds.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Now to the good stuff, it does seem that the devs will release in November no matter what (they said so them selves) and the release will be paid monthly also I remember hearing there will be no initial cost so its like a basic monthly fee i.e. around the £10 mark.
There will be features missing no real list yet but the only thing I found confirmed its political line wont be in.
The land mass will not consist of the 13 realms promised there will be only 3 Dark, Light and al dretha. The rest will be released in a set of player events that will be driven in a way for the players to set up these areas (think horizons and there last 2 race additions)
Dont expect to see anything in stores for 6 months as this will be considered the true release date.
I heard from beta testers yes that one liner again and this is sketchy st best rvrn thorough them that there may be a character wipe at the end of the 6 month period when in stores release and those players that stay on will start again with a few extra items i.e. .... Beta rewards
The last rumor I have heard is release wont be for all ................ hope this is not true my self but hey who knows
Ending this with, I honestly dont know the state of beta my mates who are in say there are issues mainly with lack of dev feedback; also what I said should be taken with salt as it seems the beta people seem more in the dark than us.
You can expect a paid beta in November. Thats what you can expect.
I am just wondering how many of the fools they have over on their forums will actually PAY THEM to finish their game. IF they really need the support of paid testers to finish the game than this project is DEAD...

Actually if the game is in such a shape to need a paid beta then I would not ever expect to see it in stores. I predict even the most rabid fanbois will drop it after a couple of weeks if it is as bad a shape as it is rumored to be.
I'm sure I'll pay to play it. If there is truly nothing interesting I'll probably stop playing. Can't really say anything before the thing actually comes out.
