Certainly calling an MMO that leans into simulated world or hard a recreation of something a SimMMO, makes sense. There's been simulation MMO like that in the past.

Though it billed itself as an "MMOARPG", Face of Mankind was heavily into the principle of players adopting roles across a variety of professions and participating in inter-faction politics between worker groups, police/authority, merchant groups, and even gangs. It had some solid simulation elements to support it's focus on social gameplay and RP as a coherent world setting. A game like Face of Mankind would make sense being called a SimMMO in that respect.

In the context of the thread though, calling something that is neither an MMO nor designed to be an MMO, a "simulated MMO", is just silly.

So how is a game like Fallout 76, Destiny and 7 Days to Die Multiplayer Server not designed in a way to be similar to a MMO without being a MMO? You do agree there is some similarities between what those games are and what MMOs generally do right?

Client/server architecture and authoritative servers is not unique to MMOs. Are you going to call all the online shooters that use authoritative server-hosted lobbies "Simi-MMOs" too then?

And on the gameplay end, that's more to do with being various forms of games with progression and persistence in RPG mechanics. If anything that makes them RPG-Lite, not something-MMO.

This is the type of circumstance where someone ought to be able to punch someone else in the face in order to prevent them from continuing to sound like a complete moron while insulting the intelligence of a whole community. Maybe I am talking about myself, maybe not. I'll let the the board gestapo figure it out.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

The Sims Online did exist, it was taken down, because EA could not put all the features of the "Sims" into an Online game. Not to mention one of the larger attractions of "The Sims" was being able to mod it.

    So there is that.
