    Seriously though, where's the entertainment?

Presumably some find maximizing their performance entertaining and in some games that is best done through specific rotations.

Well, let's take the boss fight as an example.

Yeah, not many people like hitting a boss with a lot of HP. And you're right that the support role is severely reduced.

But there's indeed nothing fun about feeling strong all the time. It works well at the start of the game, but not after that.

Thus, I think the right thing to do is to diversify the combat (still talking about the boss fight). It shouldn't be a simple slashing of his HP bar. You know, the boss should have phases and different attacks.

Feeling strong all the time is completely fun. Being strong such that nothing can challenge is entirely not fun.

A game where players feel strong even through failure is ideal.

Maximizing their performance? Yes, I've heard that before too. But I think it's pure "spin."

It is rewarding, just like being an assembler in a factory, doing the job right, over and over again per assemblage, and getting paid real money for it.
    Rewarding, but not entertaining.

    Once upon a time....

    Yes, that is ideal.
Taking on a really tough Boss and losing, knowing that few can win that battle, but doing well enough to last a while before wiping, and having some pride in that fact...that does seem like good stuff to me.
Makes you want to go try it again in the attempt to succeed and be among "the few."

That you or I may not see the entertainment in it doesn't mean others don't. Accepting that others may enjoy what we do not would make gamers in general more tolerant of the differing preferences and desires between us.

I suppose. I guess there's people who are "entertained" by watching a dryer spin, too.

But honestly, I can see a comment about wanting to relax with some coasting, after a hard day at work, etc.
Calling that "entertainment" indicates to me that said gamer needs some real entertainment to break out of the doldrums.
