New World's upcoming release announced earlier this week is exciting, especially the introduction of the Greatsword and the new zone, Brimstone Sands. But some of the major additions coming with the update leave Bradford concerned about the future of the MMO.

With all the work that players have said needs doing, it is no surprise that this update only covers part of that. This is why a shut down and restart would be better, I am not sure why they don't take this route, they must fell existing players won't return which surprises me as these days people will go back to play a MMO for less than what is seen in the BS update.

Taking a piece meal approach as they are doing is a lot harder and will take a lot longer, that's no reflection on the team it is just obvious; if you are running the game while updating it everything is slowed down. This was (do correct me as this is just from memory) a two year process for FFXIV, I can't see why NW will take less than that.

Most importantly during that period friends who played told me they got letters from the creator, telling them the way he saw the game going in terms of theme, gameplay the whole bag. Do people feel the devs are giving that direction, or are in a quandary about which way to take the game?

What future? This game does not even have the present. The number of players is insanely low for a AAA game that sold million copies.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

My guess is that Jeff Bezos and the executive team have decided that NW must succeed because it's supposed to be the showcase for using AWS for game development. It's not so much they're concerned about losing the few players they have left but losing whatever confidence other game developers might have in hosting their game services in AWS. In that light keeping NW running becomes just a marketing expense for AWS and the success of the game itself is of secondary concern. It would be great if it's successful and profitable, but not necessary in light of how deep the pockets are over at Amazon.

I could be totally off, but that's what makes sense to me.

I would be glad to give this game another if they would launch a fresh start server. I do not want to play and an established server that had all the dupes and cheating that where never handled.

I played on Orun at launch and for about 6 months, and there was so much money floating around on the server after the dupes that the market was a shit show.

I tried to jump back in but still seems like the game has a lot of the issues it did before, the game still is real laggy, they quests are still super grindy. The new group finder seems to work ok and will definitely help but i think they still have a little ways to go to draw old players back in. Maybe its time for companions :)

I've checked the charts on steam and it seems to be doing fairly well.  I have no idea where people get this notion that the game is dead.  I think peoples disklike clouds their vision.  I'm not saying it's doing great, but it's not on it's imminent death either.  It's plugging along nicely and some of the updates seem to be going in the overall right direction.  I stopped playing because of the nature of more linear games, but I'm keeping an eye out.  Maybe I'll jump back in to see the changes.

With the current capped server system the game is doomed. People can't play the game because of long login queues or as an opposite servers become underpopulated. Both cases are really unhealthy for the game and it's nearly impossible to balance this because of natural fluctuation of the player base and server transfers. So, server population decreasing results in even bigger denial, and when servers are overwhelmed with players, people just can't login and uninstall the game at the end.

I'll return for the Greatsword. Probably leave for a while, then return for dual wield should they implement something that should have been in at the getgo

To do dual wield they will have to completely change how they do weapon leveling or have a different ability and spec tree for every permutation of dual wielding. You'd need a different spec tree for dual dagger, dagger and sword, dagger and hatchet, dagger and mace, dual sword, dual hatchet, dual mace, mace and hatchet, mace and sword... Etc, etc, etc. It'd be cool if they did all that, but considering how long it took to add the blunderbuss and now the great sword. I doubt it will happen.

Lose 95% of original customers (based on their "box" sales.)
Condense servers down to just a few.

Yep...sounds like it's doing fairly well.

I can appreciate you like Kool-Aid, many people do when it comes to things that they like, and I'm not disparaging that. From a commercial point of view the game has been an utter disaster, and the amount of games that have rebounded from that kind of start to be considered commercial successes is pretty slim. Not saying it can't or won't but the odds are definitely against it.

I hope the people who are still enjoying it continue to do so, nothing wrong with the tiny population that is left compared to launch (but hey, not too many MMO's actually grow leaps and bounds post launch either.), as long as AGS keeps plugging away, and keeps it running, I'm sure there will be a niche audience that enjoys it, even though I suspect AGS can't help but be somewhat disappointed it wasn't the commercial success they may have hoped for.

The game is far from dead - but it's far from being successful either, or healthy even. It has enough players hanging on atm to keep it going, but being a sub free game it will definitely need more new and spending players to warrant ongoing development. If this was a smaller company backing them the game would've had a major change in payment model by now, with probably shutdown announced even.

What the heck, I picked it up for $20 on a lark, not sure when I'll give it a try though, not in any real hurry yet.

With the mergers you can actually have more than 1 per server. I have 2 in Ygdrasil.

I would have probably started with revamping the level 30-45 experience. However, they've said in an interview that they plan to revamp higher level ranges in future patches. I guess they wanted to start from the bottom and work their way up.

With all MMOs most of the new players are lost within the first few hours.

The early levels are very important for keeping new players interested and even the Creative Director of New World has said the questing is boring.

I have 2 real issues with the game

1/ The RNG on gear is completely insane, more deterministic crafting (pick 2 perks and a main stat, still leaving 1-2 perks random for epic and legendary gear) without the need for timeless shards would be a great fix.

2/ The games economy is a mess because of the territory control system and gold it provides. They did say they're looking at this in the next update but that doesn't eliminate the current problem of BIS items costing 300k or more in a game that's not easy to earn gold unless you belong to one of these large guilds.

If these issues get addressed and they do fresh start servers I will probably give them another chance.
