Victoria 3 is a behemoth of a strategy simulation, and Bradford has spent nearly 60 hours diving headlong into the politics and economics of the Victorian Age. So how does it hold up and is it a worthy addition to Paradox's lineup?

Miked on Steam is not good; but as always, I will wait for the reviews, first one I have seen 9.0 so far.

    8 out 10 IGN

Player reviews will continue to be more critical until patches patch the game to run best on their systems.

I am looking forward to it but it has big shoes to fill
Just been taking a look, the reviews are quite respectable and significantly higher than V2. As you say negative Steam reviews could be summed up with "wait for patches". Not played Victoria before though this is my sort of game, so this is likely where I begin the franchise.

I am a big fan of Paradox games.  I've put more hours into HoI3 and V2 than I care to admit.  I loved the tech tree in V2, yet there was no mention of it in this article.  V2 was great for helping you remember those obscure geographical districts from around the world; I'm certain that V3 will be just as insightful.

I'm totally wondering with my history of Paradox games played through Steam why V3 has never appeared on my wish list?  Maybe Steam automatically added it there for me.  I'd better go check.

edit:  No, it's on the wish list.  It was added a while back; I must have forgotten.  There are quite a few reviews accumulating, and even many of the "Recommend" ones say there are numerous problems.  My concern is that Paradox will 'fix' these issues with DLC -- at a cost.  This will end up being another $500 title in a few years.  It may price itself out of my price range.

My main concern is dumbing down, it's the curse of gaming. The last CIv being a perfect example, but Paradox has not done that yet to my knowledge. Though I have played a few of their titles I have coincidently not played many/any(?) "sequels", but hopefully that's the case.

Reviewer are disconnecting with reality and player base more often than usual I'm afraid.
    6/10 at best.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

Sadly looks like it needs a lot more work.

The music is great though, as a friend of mine is singing in several tracks ;)

I would love to try these types of games but I have no clue on how to even start. Is there a primer game that might teach me how to play this type of game?

The game is a lot of fun I think most of the negative reviews from players is to do with the changes they made to warfare and that some people feel it's not faithful to Vicky 2. The game is exactly what they said it was it's a line go up simulator and I'm really enjoying it. I have had exactly one crash. In 30 hours over two campaigns. Not that it matters but I have around 5k hours in PDX games on steam and that doesn't count the games like hoi3 and Vicky 2 that were put on the platform well after they released. My most hours are in EU IV so I do know what I'm talking about.

Read a lot of steam reviews and they say that it's a buggy and unfinished mess.

It has a horrible loading time I'm using 10th generation intel 3.5G 8 cores with 16 G mem with older 1080ti 8 G, it still takes 5 min to load, if you use V2 spec to play this game you probably won't be able to load it until all you hair turns white, bugs are not that much, crashes are not that frequent, but when you do have crashes you are back to the long loading screen (some people might kill themselves)

Is that good advice? Sorta. If you play CK (I would play 2 if all the addon costs concern, you), you are going to realise two things. These sort of Paradox games are so good they are a beast of a time sink, so remember that before getting one. Also, you will realise from what Blue has said that CK is the better game, something I had an inkling of from the reviews. CK is simply the best game of this ilk out there I have played, will you be happy to play something lesser afterwards?

If you are like me this won't be a concern, I love this gaming genre too much, but for someone else, playing weaker before better may be a better option. That said, if you are new to the genre CK may seal the deal that this genre is for you, decisions, decisions. :)

The large time commitment might be something I will definitely hesitate over but I really want to be able to play and understand it but I suspect I haven't got a talent for this type of over reaching organizational skills.

Last time @Scorchien gave  some recommendation in one thread about the 4X games. I tried one of them and I never got into it. I just lack some foresight and planning skills.

May be you're right I must consider this carefully. I will keep this in mind and wish list the Crusader Kings III on Steam.

If you are going for an overall 4k recommendation I would say Age of Wonder, on the simpler side but still a time sink. If you don't like that one, I doubt the genre will ever appeal to you. Shame we lost Scorchien, he could give as good advice as anyone on here.

I can't get into playing CK 3 either, there is one paradox game that I played a lot and it's stellaris. the base engine is actually the same, except Ck3 doesn't have combat animations, whereas in Stellaris you can see your fleet in combat in real-time. If CK3 can field armies and have real-time battles it would definitely be more interesting.

My Paradox game of choice is HoI3.  I've tried CK1, CK2, V2, Stellaris, EU II, EU III, EU IV, Cities: Skylines, and others.  I like the fact that HoI3 is largely historically based.  It came before the Paradox trend to completely change the base game with a new expansion every 10-14 months, which only drives up the total cost of the game and divides the player base.  Want to play EU IV with a friend?  The first thing is to determine what expansions you'll use.  HoI3 only has 3 real expansions, and most people only play the final expansion.

HoI4 is the replacement for HoI3, but moves from the historical-feel that I liked, more gamey.

If you are even slightly interested in a game of this type I would suggest Crusader Kings 3.
Better game (and series inmho) a great introduction for new players and great systems.

    Great article as to why:

Victoria 3: Why Strategy Newcomers Should Play Crusader Kings III First (cbr.com)
I would second this. I had never played Victoria, but had the baseline from CK3, EU4 and HoI4 to fall back on. But I feel CK3 really helped with navigating the map and menus, HOI4 was helpful for supply chains and manufacturing to a degree.

V3 has a "tutorial" and I do like that they don't just tell you how to do something, but why you should. But the engine is still a beast to jump into, and V3 is one of the most complex iterations of that engine. CK3 is still a beast, but a more manageable one at the outset, I think.

Really the first load was long I agree and I think that is standard with all paradox games of this generation but after that my load times are like 30 seconds I timed it four times from complete exit to relaunch and it never went more than 30.

Man I don't know what to say to that I have had one crash and I was doing something really convoluted in the menus. I have read about the bugs I just am not seeing them. There are some issues with the American civil war and they are fixing it this week. One thing you might need to consider is paradox has bread a special breed of complainers. They have made mistakes on expansions and released some real stinkers. I think personally they have to many expansions these days and it gets expensive they countered that with a reasonable subscription 4.99 in several of their games and it does cover the new expansions.
I would just say if the game sounds good to you try it I think it's fun I'm up to 40 hours now and really enjoying my time in it.

I never got into CK 3 I'm not sure why EuIV is my game of choice but I wouldn't suggest starting there as it has some crazy systems that you could play for 100 hours and not even know they existed.

Well there is a new grand strategy, that takes longer than ck3, it's terra invicta. It's not paradox games, but it plays like one, it has xcom theme, basically you played as shadow organization that controls government either to fight or cooperate with aliens, it has earth map and entire solar system with tech like the tv series "Expanse". you can play for an entire week with 5x speed and still not see your country capable of building interstellar ships. lol
