Riot MMO New Details?

giantessfangiantessfan Member UncommonPosts: 185
Haven't seen this talked about yet and thought it was interesting so would share some details. Ghostcrawler did an interview where he talked about the MMO scene and though he never specifically talked about the League of Legends MMO he is the lead designer and he did mention Riot a few times. So here are some things I found interesting.

Before we begin this was just a preview of the entire interview so more will probably come out when the full interview drops.

  • Riot will cancel the MMO but not due to money but due to it not being up to snuff. Riot wants quality in there games and if they feel like they are not getting it they will cancel the project without a thought.
  • Riot is owned by Tencent (this we knew). So not only does Riot have a ton of money but so does Tencent. Money is not a problem with the MMO. They have plenty of money. He made it clear it isn't a blank check but as long as he is showing progress they like and they are hitting milestones they will give him whatever he asks.
  • Riot doesn't like P2W. They have never had it in any of there other games so don't expect to see it in the MMO.

For more general things

  • Ghostcrawler thinks subs are done. Most MMO's that launch with a sub wont succeed into todays market. He thinks F2P with a cosmetic cash shop is the way to go with an optional sub for people who want to pay more for added benefits that don't break the game. Plus he said that subbed games make you feel like you have to log in to play and he wants people to want to play because they want to not because they feel like they have to because they paid 15$

It's a good thing that optional subs, unlike mandatory ones, don't make you feel like you have to log in to get your money's worth.

    :)

Anyway... this is the future MMO I'm most excited about so keep hitting those milestones!

Its also nice to have a MMO being made by a company that has milestones. There is a good chance this game comes out before AoC, Pantheon, Star Citzen, etc...

Isn't that crazy. They all took so long we got the next AAA MMO

RIOT not liking or even wanting P2W doesn't matter. Tencent calls the shots on that, not Ghostcrawler. Same with the cancel if he doesn't like it bit. Tencent can quite literally yank it out from under RIOT and hand it to one of their dozens of studios. Ghostie, as he is want to do even before being with RIOT, is trying to appear more important than he really is.

Rest of it, we'll see. Be nice if something decent comes out of it.
Sure if something like that has ever happened in the past like that with Riot games. Riot is one of, if not, the most profitable companies they own and for the most part Tencent leaves the companies they buy alone. The last thing I worry about is Tencent getting involved with this MMO.

Plus Tencent has owned Riot forever and like Ghost said no game has had P2W there has been plenty of chances

All of Tencent's game companies combined make up only 30% of their revenue,

I'm not saying there will be P2W. I just called out the fact that whether there will be or not has nothing to do with Ghostcrawler or even RIOT. It's why you usually see devs not in control of the actual monetization default to "we have no plans for P2W" just in case it happens.

Plus, Ghostcrawler has sucked since WoW.  :D

It depends. I like Ghostcrawers work at Riot. I think he is done some good things for LoL and the like. I also wasn't attack you, hope you didn't think that, just debating

I remember his work in WoW.

Took years to remove his stink from the game.

But, hey, if it's cancelled because they don't like it they could always take what they have and turn it into a first person shooter, just like what Blizzard did with Overwatch.

Seems like a lot of doubletalk.

Subs are done, but will have one along with a cash shop.
Doesn't like P2W but subs will give added benefits that won't "break the game".

I'm glad that they want the "forced sub fee" model to finally go away. I never liked this, it always made me feel like I'm wasting my money when I am unable to spend time in game and that it is unfair to charge me same $15/month that people who can afford to spend more time in game (and who are consuming more server resources/electricity compared to me) are paying.

Other than that there's not much to say about this video, I need to see actual game to know whether to be excited about it or not. Knowing Riot and their lack of imagination as well as toxicity-promoting gameplay design (meaning small team sizes) in all of their existing games - their next MMO may be similarly deficient... Or may be less deficient. I'll see when it will actually be playable.

I am extremely skeptical.  This game world has multiple races. Will they be playable? If so, how will they have different armor models across all these unique looking races?

Well, do you think that the business model in League of Legends is pay to win?  Let's not ignore the company's history.

Seems like a lot of doubletalk.

    Subs are done....

Subs are not done...at all. They have simply morphed into the F2P "optional" sub-model that creates a two-tiered system of perks for subs instead of just subs for admittance.

I honesty prefer the old system better but that's a dead horse.

As to doubletalk... you think? :)

It's why I made my sarcastic comment: "It's a good thing that optional subs, unlike mandatory ones, don't make you feel like you have to log in to get your money's worth."

"Money's worth" of anything you have for a limited time, whether its for the privilege of just logging in or for the perks. is still worth the same over the same period of time and the incentive to use it a lot to get your money's worth is identical. I thought that distinction they made was silly.

League of Legends isn't P2W. I have never heard anyone say that ever. One of the crazy things about LoL is that just about every champion is pretty well balanced and they rotate free champions instead of keeping the same ones. The balance makes the game non P2W due to the fact that any champion could take on any champion. Though some classes will do better than others.

Obviously Lux wont do well against a crazy high damage dealer

    That doesn't mean anything.

LoL and the MMO are 2 different games in 2 different genres launching in 2 very different eras of the video game industry.

LoL launched in 2009. Back then Free to play MMOs were western failures and low budget eastern grinders.

Who knows what NFT hellscape the MMO genre will be like when this MMO actually launches.

I hope the progression is designed in a smart way so they don't have to sell "boosts" and such down the line. I also hope they have a plan to crack down hard on bots and RMT.

Boosts will def be a thing. He mentioned on twitter that he loves the idea of boosts when an expansion comes out like FFXIV because it helps people catch up to there friends and family. So expect it

Level boosts are the best thing to come to mmos, leveling once is good, you learn the story, the areas etc

Leveling again after that through the same content is just dreadfully boring and unfun and you dont get anything out of it, it is always far better to pay for a boost and skip to max level where you get to enjoy content and usually the classes since low level classes feel disgustingly boring.

I restarted FF14 in oce and there was no way I would level a character more than once from lvl 1, got my reaper to 90 through the entire story, then bought boosts for all other dps classes and slowly leveled them from 80-90 when i felt like it, especially through bozja which is very fun and you get stuff out of it while leveling the last 10 lvls.

Yeah, that $15 a month really drives my need to log in every....

Hmmm. How many hours of entertainment can one typically get for $15 these days? I can't even go to the movies and get back home again at that cost.

I can't really say I'm feeling pressured to push hard to get my money's worth out a MMORPG subscription.

    wait wait wait

LoL MMO going to be a real Full MMO, or a Multiplayer Online Action RPG SEMI MMO?

I am getting conflicting information. I have no problem with SEMI MMOs I just want clarity if this is a real MMO or not.

This MMO is going nowhere. TenCent is owned and operated by the CCP in China. Riot games is helping China collect people's data. Riot is no better than Facebook. For all you know they will throw the next election with the CCP. Do not give these clowns any money.
