This is why Blizzard is so desperate and flailing about trying to get back to China. China has them by the balls.

Will be interesting to see how the game fares at this price point. 70, 90 and 100 for a PC game is steep.

It is, but yet it's quickly becoming normative by the market. Go to steam and look at Redfall or Forespoken. They are at the exact same price point. The precedent has been set and you can expect all AAA titles at least to follow. Indy studios may hold off, but if the AAA studios are successful don't expect the Indy studios to leave money on the table.

I suppose games can't stay the same price forever. It seems like they were 49.95 or so for quit some time.

I remember saving my money for Final Fantasy VII (I was a poor college student at the time). It was 39.99. In today's dollars that would be $76.78. So it seems like 69.99 is relatively close to where it should be.

I also don't think that most games are worth that price so I wait for them to go on sale.

Edit:  Just looking back 2013 is when games started being regularly sold at 59.99 (there were a few exceptions before then) and in today's dollars that would be 75.59.

Just keep in mind that D4 is sold exclusively through Battlenet via direct download. So no production of discs, boxes, manuals. No shipping. And no selling at wholesale to places like BestBuy.

Not saying they should not price it like this, just saying the analogy didnt account for some of the items I listed.  Also, FFVII didnt have any microtransactions or seasonp asses right?

I am doing this from memory so don’t hold it against me but there have been a few articles about the ‘added’ costs of physical and distribution versus completely digital. I believe total costs per unit (game) were about 1-2 dollars max considering everything from box all the way to fuel for transport.

Just as a side note, D4 on Series X starts at 79 euro’s, another leap in price.

I think it would be more than a dollar or two but the real savings is cutting out the retailer.  That’s a huge chunk.  No idea what typical game markup is but in most industries it’s 40-100%

While that is true about the PC, it is a console game too.  While many (most?) of us don't care much about consoles, I wonder if part of the decision making process for the PC price is the console price also.  I can envision a world where the game is 59.99 on PC and 69.99 on console and console players are irate and there is significant backlash.  Again, we may not care much about that aspect but I'm sure that there are plenty who would throw every kind of social media fit imaginable.

But retailers aren’t cut out, most digital stores, including Steam, Epic, console stores etc. are just that. Perhaps there is a difference in price cut, and according to the 30% Apple tax outrage there might be, but they are most certainly there.

As far as I can tell its only being sold direct through Battlenet. I'm only concerned with the PC version.  When I bough D2 it was on a disc that was created, boxed and shipped to a store like BestBuy or Gamestop.  Where someone had to stock it and sell it to me.

For D4, that is not an option.  My only option is to buy direct from Battlenet with no middleman.

Am I missing something?  Is there an alternate place to get D4 for PC?

I may not want to buy it and I definitely don't want to spend $70 on it, I will probably still get it and I will probably still pay $70 for it.

It's just how it is with gamers. We're cheap and complain about everything, but we'll still play.

I can only speak for myself and while I don't support Blizzard as a company these days, I will still buy the game on release. I've played Diablo since 2000 and aRPGs is my jam, especially in the wait for THE MMORPG that will consume the little time I spend on gaming now when I've turned a boomer. Although I think we won't see a game on the line of Darkfall ever again...

I initially saw this D4 price hike, and current games going there.  I see people going' prices of development are higher'.  I call bullshit.  Games were 50-60 for quite some time (even barring their development costs)  End costs are pure Fuck you nowadays when a game can come along and be 1 mill (I'm pulling numbers) dev cost, same price as low ball then (SWTOR... omfg).  The end game, dollar price we pay is what they think we will pay.  And For F/ Sake, it doesn't matter the game, 40, or 100, you will all pay for "Garbage". packaged in a pricey box.   Hell, I would too, but my income is limited....
That's the real... issue is current price hikes.///
  • TalraekkTalraekk Member UncommonPosts: 297
My issue with inflation is 20 years ago high end games were 50 bux.  In the 1 - 20 years games went up ten dollars.  Graphics, complexity, general gameplay improved (I'm pulling numbers outta my ass) 9000% in the interim.  In that 15-20 years we payed 10 dollars.  In the span of 1-3 years of garbage increases in games we gained 12-20 dollars.  Non AAA games are now becoming BETTER than AAA games (pricewise).  And considering AAA games seem to think if they can draw a tree, they earn 70 bux, games are completely f/a/everywhere in price.

Do not forget that it’s not just cost to make the game and price per unit.  It’s copies sold. So while we say (correctly) that prices stayed level for a long time, we must remember that the market has grown immensely since the early days.    It doesn’t cost much more to produce 100,000 than 10,000,000 copies

That said, just to be clear… companies can charge anything they want.  It’s their product and it’s not some natural right to own it.
Exactly they can charge whatever they can get away with. It's your choice to buy it so don't blame them, blame yourself. Exercise some patience and wait for a sale.

I'm not a Blizzard fan in general, their games have never really grabbed me. I don't like the IPs, I don't like the gameplay.

But, a close friend did convince me to get Diablo 3. I got it on PC and played a bunch of characters, and my brother got it on xbox where we played coop.

    What a shit game!

I mean seriously, how the hell did this game sell that many copies? The world is dull, depressing and generic. The combat is god-awful. Action combat? what action? There's no combos, no timing, no reactions. There is zero genuine action.

All the game seemed to have was a complex meta-game (that was still very shallow, despite the complexity) and great psychological manipulation. That never-ending stream of loot got the fun brain juices flowing for a bit, but after a few hours you can see through it.

Given the brain-drain and all the other problems at Blizz, I just can't see how D4 could ever be a good game. D3 was awful, D4 will be worse.

Yes but a 100% increase seems like greed to me. They're all digitally downloadable so it's not like they have to create boxes and DvD's. It just goes to show that production costs must have sky rocketed but will players who are feeling the pinch with $7-9 eggs dish out this kind of money for a game, only time will tell. I will be waiting for a sale since there are plenty of other games to play in the meantime. Like I tell my wife when were out grocery shopping "If you pay these massive price increases they will just continue to raise the price"
But didn't games cost even more When taking into account inflation?

Sure, they aren't making boxes but it's my understanding that the marketing alone can add almost half again what a game cost to make. Higher  Salaries as well as higher prices for things can contribute to that.

    This is an interesting article.

haha, nice build up to the inevitable slam. I agree nothing was groundbreaking about D3 other than RMT.

Blizzard can't really use the 'we need money for future content' when they still have D3 going all this time with no continuous monetization.

D3 doesn't have ongoing new content. It has periodic tweaks of existing content. You don't have to fund what doesn't exist. The regular addition of new content would require some sort of monetization to support it as it takes far more work than tweaking that already there.

I may not want to buy it and I definitely don't want to spend $70 on it, I will probably still get it and I will probably still pay $70 for it.

It's just how it is with gamers. We're cheap and complain about everything, but we'll still play.

Depends on what you mean by "content."

Every season adds new things (especially the upcoming one now in the PTR for testing) new meta-defining sets and items all of which are additions to the core game after the season is over.

No, there are no new "zones" or stories but anyone who still plays D3 after this many years couldn't care less about story mode, We play it for the loot and gearing and to see just how far we can push each season starting all over again from level 1.

It shows that you don't play it if you think that all that is added 3 or 4 times a year is just "tweaking."

I have played D3 over the years.  I would classify the changes 3 - 4 times a year as tweaking.  You think these are major design overhauls? LOL get a grip.

There's playing and then there's playing.

So what was your highest solo GR and what build did you do it with?

New sets were added for all classes a year and a half ago, a total rework of Wiz Fiewbird set, Natalya's DH set, and a bunch of other sets for all classes that play totally differently than they used to, the addition of Legacy of Dreams gem that makes non-set Ancient Legendary gearing not just competitive but often the S tier best for a given class...etc.

I bet most of that is news to you although you "have played over the years" whatever the fuck that means lol.

And point me to where I said "major design overhaul." We're talking about new content here.
