Tried to play it twice. Never got to max level.
Trying to play it with 300+ms lag definitely doesn't help.

"Are you up for a challenge" or what ever it used to say every second or two didn't help it's cause with me.

Did this game have any PVE servers at launch?

This is some serious rose tinted goggles nostalgia going on here. If everyone who posted comments claiming to have loved this game and wanted to play it had actually played it and given them money it probably wouldn't have shut down. I very much doubt all the people giving this game praise actually played it for any length of time.

You just have to look at the steam numbers when it went free 2 play and see the nose dive down to around 300 players for the receipts.

I'd bet if the game relaunched the OP wouldn't even last a month before abandoning it just like everyone else.

I played to cap , did some raiding , had some fun .It just could seem to hold player retention, soloing was difficult and may have e been a big contributor to that,  ya know we have alot of people who think they should be soloing mmos.

Without the easy path they were easily put off.

I will be honest and admit I had a great deal of difficulty healing and avoiding the light show. I simply could not manage it. It was just too hard for me. I liked the game but I was not able to perform any healing well enough to keep people alive and myself away from the relentless attacks in the form of various shapes coming at me at increased speed. The game made me feel totally incompetent. I gave up.  :'(

You've got a couple things wrong here. The first is that the game had its own launcher, and very few people used the Steam client.

Also, the reason I quit is because as my guild lost members there were no new members to recruit and it slowly fell apart. I didn't have the heart to try to rebuild a guild or join a new one after months of raiding with the same people.

I stayed away because I didn't have trust in the development team, and clearly I was right. However, if they game had retained a large enough population and actually met its scheduled content releases, and ultimately delivered more content than it did in reality, I probably would have stayed with it.

There haven't been better 5 man dungeons in any game before, or since.
Too bad that there usually weren't five players on the server in the same zone at any given time.

When I played about two months after launch, it was very much a ghost town.  Every once in a great while, you'd see another player.  Singular.  Maybe you could get a group of two if you really tried.  But if you wanted larger than that, you'd better bring your own friends from outside the game.

Well, at launch the game suffered from a crowded server problem. So the devs added a ton of extra servers, which became ghost towns after a couple of months. It was likely you were on one of the deserted ones. A little later they condensed the servers into (I believe) 2 mega servers that were decently populated for a little while longer.

That's probably true, but it basically concedes that they left the live game in a basically unplayable state for months shortly after launch.  A game that does that very much deserves to die.

Thats because forums do not represent the larger playerbase.  People on forums tend to be the most dedicated types to the genre, they will pretty much play anything if its just halfway decent.  Some of these peoples standards are so low they will rate a 4/10 game a 10/10.

Then there are the people that have only played this game and say how amazing it is, but have never played anything good to compare it too.  Or are comparing this game to the other trash coming out.  They have no concept of what is good, because they have never played a game that was actually good.

I'll go on the record to say that I've played almost every AAA MMORPG ever made (with major exceptions being EQ1, SWG, and SWTOR), and many many lesser ones.

Doesnt this just prove my point that some people on this forum are dedicated types to the genre and will pretty much play anything if its halfway decent?

This is exactly why devs that listen to their little hype bubble are caught offgaurd when inside the bubble they hear all these great things about their game during development, but then the larger audience savages the game on release.

People on forums and on discords etc... do not represent the larger audience proportionally.

Sometimes different people like different games.  Just because you personally don't like something doesn't mean that no one else should be allowed to.

For that matter, if people are happy, you shouldn't barge in and tell them that they shouldn't be happy.  That's not specific to MMORPGs or even gaming.

For me, it's a little different. A lot of games I've had to play as part of my job. However, I have personally hopped around a lot because I've been unhappy with the release or the eventual direction of most MMORPGs. For example, I haven't liked WoW since WotLK. However, there was a lot of constructive criticism from the WildStar beta testers that never got fixed/implemented by the devs. Most devs are in their own echo chamber.

It's common for people to say "if only the developers and listened to my constructive criticism and done such and such, the game would have been good".  But a bunch of different people are saying that with a bunch of mutually contradictory things, and often things that most of the other players would dislike.

Really loved the art design and the whole space serial aesthetic. I also love the idea of the telegraphed moves - implementation was hit or miss. Only stopped playing when pvp battlegrounds became ghost towns. Too many players required for raids too, imo. I recall there not being many updates. Mounts were awesome designs!

My theory is it failed because the raids were actually really difficult. This game was a ton of fun leveling up and doing 5-mans, but then even really good raiders couldn't advance, and I don't think they liked that.

I'm not great at super fast paced combat and don't have the quick reactions and processing needed to excel at this game, so I never expected to be great. I just had fun leveling a ton of characters to max and doing dailies and 5-mans.

Unless 90% of the playerbase was raiding in the first 1-2 months, steam charts says differently.  The game opened with a small core, and seen a steep decline within a month.  It seems to me most people just didnt like the game.

You really need to stop using steamcharts for games with native clients, especially WildStar. The game launched in Summer 2014, most players were raiding by fall 2014, and it didn't even have a Steam client until 2016. I get that you didn't like the game, but stop spreading a false narrative if you don't know what happened.

Its not about what I want, its about if the game is good enough that a large number of players will support it to make the game successful.  Devs are making garbage, and players are rating it low.

Maybe this dev likes garbage and made a game that only a tiny amount of people actually enjoy playing.  They probably think their tastes were mainstream and would appeal to more, but was wrong.  This is what happens when people are delusional and have no clue what the vast majority of others like.

If this person likes trash, then they should be ecstatic because there is alot of trash on the market right now.  Never a shortage of garbage.  However most people want an actual good game to play and are sick and tired of all the trash.
