Surely you have forgotten America and insufferable levels of smugness??

I've always said that the French and the Americans don't get along because each is absolutely convinced that they are the center of the Universe.

How could one forget American flaws, at least as seen by other nations. They are bleated on about with regularity, often with similar insufferable levels of smugness as the subject of their critique. Every nation puts itself at the center. It is the degree of blatancy in that regard that varies.

I don't think that being insufferably smug is so much a function of country as it is of elites.  In your own country, you likely meet a lot of decently normal people in your everyday life who aren't insufferably smug.  When you hear from prominent foreigners, they're likely to be ones who are particularly rich and/or powerful, not the random guy on the street.  And being particularly rich and powerful is surely correlated with being insufferably smug.

Gotta tell you, when the first question they ask is about whether I am a POC it kind of turns me off. I was gonna give it a look, but... bleh.
It's a RolePlayingGame right? I'm not a wizard in real life either... but I thought the setting seemed interesting. Oh well.
Wait, they want to know your real-life race?  That's not a good sign.  Sometimes there are good reasons for developers to care what country you're from, but not race.
Yes.  It is the first question they ask after you click the agreement stuff:

I could almost understand it if it asked if you had African decent or some historical connection but I see no merit in this question.  After all, someone of Dominican, or American Indian or Asian has no more "connection" to the source material than I do.

It's a very troubling question and the more I think about it the angrier I get.

Perhaps @lotrlore can have MMORPG.COM reach out to the developers for the rationale behind this and why they lump all POC together and seperate non-poc?

I don't know if there would be much point to asking. I fully expect they have a PR response to this already prepared as it is hard to imagine they would not expect this to eventually be questioned by someone.

The only point in asking questions about race is to make decisions based on race. Otherwise it could have no impact, making it pointless while risking the negative impressions it could cause.

I hear from one of my current employees (who worked in the US) that skin color question is present on many application forms over there - nobody in Europe would even conceive asking such horrifying question in any context, being it public administration, employment agencies or whatever: we have laws against it.

Almost all medical or employment forms and applications in the US ask for voluntary self identification of one's race usually for tracking purposes required by the government or because some health issues are more prevalent in certain races.

While my employer has no problem getting such information from the US team, so few European employees have voluntarily identified it's not worth them reporting on the results for the region.

Well they might just be curious to know how many white people their game is appealing to, more for marketing purposes than anything else.

Or they could be just racist haters, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt before writing their game off based on unconfirmed assumptions about their motivations.

Besides, most developers totally ignore comments from any and all gamers, usually very equal opportunity in that respect.

I thought of the marketing aspect after my post as well, which is a better assumption in the absence of evidence otherwise.
