I entirely agree.  I can't believe they charged a subscription for THAT.

EDIT:  At least they dropped the mandatory subscription now.  It's now buy to play with an optional subscription that has some so-so fringe benefits.  I wish them well.

Alright, I have watched this game from the start, and for the life of me, I cannot think of why I would play it.

Is there something unique or special about this game that would make it better then say, GW2?

It's designed for those who favor old school, masochistic game play mechanics. ;)

No in game maps, no real compass (the begrudgingly add a moon that acts as a "North Star," I don't think they even have a user accessable coordinate system.

Dark is really dark, break out your torch, which does take away one hand for use in combat. Nights are more dangerous, with more of and much meaner mobs which means group play is strongly recommended, but that's true in the day as well.

If GW2 (or other, more polished MMOs) is more your jam I doubt Embers Adrift is something that would appeal.

Especially not if you enjoy playing as a mage or other magic caster which were left out at launch, despite being part of the original design back before the change in leadership and rebranding (fka  Saga of Lucima) back in July of 2021.

Nope, hate finger wiggling spell casters, I play mainly melee assault style classes, there is something honest about running up to it and killing it

Now see the thing with Ambers, or the idea of "Old School" is I dealt with that whole, no map, night/day blind shit, corpse runs, and needing to beg random people for group to kill basic mobs when I played EQ

Now, no joke, I was very lucky to have a friendly guild and static that I played with back then, but as it stood, if they were not on, I was not playing without them. I was not logging in all by myself. No fucking way.

While I had fucktons of fun with my friends, I can't say I liked the way things were back then, and for the life of me, I have no idea how or why anyone finds that needing to beg other random people for a group attractive or enjoyable

As my friends grew older life came at us, kids, family, jobs, ex-wifespouse, new fucktoys, and all the whatthefucks of mid life crisis hitting, and suddenly I am alone or just duoing, and those old school games, well, their shine started to look like a polished turd

So games like GW2 where I can do a lot of things on my own time, at my own pace, have been the exact evolution of gaming that I needed, and I do not miss "Old School" at all, even if I was there and played through it

Really, do you all like the idea of needing to glue your ass to someone else just to explore the game world?

Does that really appeal to anyone?

Or is this one of those things where you all say you love it, because you know a lot of other people hate it, and it makes you feel special in some oddly fucked up way?

As a person who solos a lot I find grouping a lot of fun!

It's never my policy to group with Randoms because I have no interest in tagging along with other people. I want to do what *I* want to do in the games I play, when I want to do it, how I want to do it and if I am in the mood to do it.  Other people are irrelevant to my gaming enjoyment.  All they are useful for is putting stuff up for sale so I can buy crafted stuff I can't be bothered to make.

You can't guarantee that a AAA will be a good game, that should show how wrong such thinking is.

I am sorry to say even at a low level I didn't enjoy this game. To tell you the truth Everquest of old in P99 is a far better game. It has more classes and definitely better skills and spells. Pity.

I did give the game a try, since it's cheap and I was bored, but player numbers are very, very low.  They fell into the old trap of making a game that positively encourages grouping and socialising, which is admirable, but... there's nobody to group with.  Chat may as well be entirely ignored because it's virtually dead apart from the (very) occasional WTB or WTS. I think they did a wise move when they dropped the mandatory sub, but the optional sub gives no real benefits so that's not going to pull people in either.

The avatar is a red flag, but as I just reported someone for being an adbot who I now think is a real person I am leaving this one. :)
