AMD and Radeon

I read an article that got me thinking. But first few facts.

Radeon is an ANCIENT brand(one of the oldest?)
AMD didn't have luck with it in a decade.
People, most likely, associate Radeon with mediocrity.

So ...

...should AMD get rid of the Radeon brand? Could they get revitalized in that process similar to how they were in the Athlon -> Ryzen situation?

(It would also seem like they could get replaced as #2 if Battlemage turns out good ; they REALLY need to do something and do it NOW!)

Radeon is equivalent to GeForce, it's a way for AMD to differentiate their consumer product from professional product. I don't think most consumers of computers really care what AMD puts next to its name. They have no idea what an AMD or a nVidia are. The issue AMD faces with GPUs is their OEM support which has dwindled and getting sufficient supply. What can you do to move more GPUs when you sell every last one?

Luckily for AMD, the nVidia gimpware has mostly been flushed out of the ecosystem. When the GeForce RTX 3xxx series released, nVidia changed their architecture as game companies were abandoning their product support as it didn't help with consoles. That was a more than decade long effort for AMD.

It's not like AMD is doing anything bad right now. They offer a competitive product, their drivers are better, and their software is better.

Yeah, that makes sense. But from the marketing side, one is left to wonder ... could this brand be evolved and would it be a good move?

A bit old thread, but: If AMD could somehow use a brand that would get recognized as the GPU powering XBox and Playstation, that might be worth it.

As long as they can't capitalize on their console business, their position in PC GPUs is quite weak, and their products don't look particularly good compared to NVidia. On their PC GPU business alone they likely don't have the power to create any better brand, so they might as well keep using Radeon.

How do you know that? Maybe the new brand would be received as the new age for AMDATi? Besides, didn't they want to make a new brand some 5 or so years ago?

AMD branding doesn't bother me.

Intel could disrupt the gaming ecosystem. It depends on how Battlemage turns out I guess, but also I think they could be a contender for the next iteration of console hardware.

It would be nice to see more options and competition. I feel like Nvidia doesn't respect its customers. AMD only puts in a minimal effort to get the maximum revenue back out and are okay with being the slightly less overpriced second place competitor. It would be nice if that uncomfortable balance was thrown out of whack.
