100% Brand New to the game

Hello everyone:

Let's see.  I suppose you could say I just recently crawled out from under a rock or something, as I have never seen, tried, experienced, or so much as watched a gameplay video on Star Wars Galaxies.  The funny question to ask, however, would be "why not?"    I have played other MMO's.  As a matter of fact, I am involved (albeit not heavily) with both EQ2 and EVE Online right now.  In the past, I have played both WoW and CoH.  I would without question be considered somewhere between a normal and casual player, not because of the games themselves, but more due to schedule.

I am pretty easy to please also.  I can honestly say that I have enjoyed all four of the games I listed above very much, but for different reasons.  The reason I am posting is pretty simple actually.  I have read a great deal of negative press about SWG.  I have also heard some good stuff.  I was in the store yesterday and decided to pick up the box that includes all 3 parts to the game.  I plan on loading it up tonight and giving it a look-see.  I was looking for some mature advise on a server to choose when I start.  I'll give you a very brief background of what I enjoy about MMO's - if that helps you recommend a server.

I like to craft.  Alot!  I have heard the crafting system in SWG is actually quite cool.  I know nothing about it, but look forward to trying it out.  I like to adventure both solo and in teams.  Honestly, I do not have a preference either way, but if forced to make a decision, would probably choose teaming over soloing.  I have played the other games long enough to realize the realities of game economies, and how they get borked over time.  It just sort of happens, and I accept that.  But, if you were in my shoes, knowing what you know, and wanting to at least be marginally successful in the economy with crafting things, selling them, making some coin here and there, what servers would you recommend?

I am not a powergamer by a long shot.  If I enjoy SWG, I will be switching between it, EVE, and EQ2 depending on the mood I am in.  (I have quite a bit of discretionary income, so the monthly fees are not an issue, if you were wondering).  I like to roleplay if there are others around that do it.  For me it's alot of fun, but certainly not necessary.  I do however really think having a "relatively" mature community is important.  (one of the turn-offs of an otherwise great game that is WoW).  So keep that in mind when recommending a server to me.  I am not really into being "given" stuff when I start out.  I like to experience and earn things myself, in order to feel a sense of accomplishment, so therefore I don't NEED to be in a guild to enjoy myself.  However, a mature guild full of guys and gals would be most welcome if it were to happen.

That's about it.  Any advice would be appreciated.  If you read through this whole boring post, you have my thanks.  All the best.

    Welcome to SWG,

If you want to check out a normal server with a healthy population and quite some activity you are welcome to join us on Naritus. Its a US west coast server. Several of the forum readers here have started a toon there. You can reach me as Novarider or Delos there, but Marguul or Noobia will welcome you too as a mmorpg fellow poster. Of course you can get a free starter package from me - no strings attached. And keep your BARC :-) ... you will kick yourself later if you sell it :-) On Naritus you will find roleplaying and PvP to be medium compared to dedicated servers. Its about average in all aspects of SWG and has avoided all the excesses that happened on some other servers (duping, exploits, lagfests etc.). The community  is one of the best you can find on any of the SWG servers.

I have been a crafter since summer 2003. You will like crafting in SWG. You can tread it like a whole minigame and never even touch a weapon if you dont want to.

If you are in Europe I would recommend Europe-Chimaera or Europe-Farstar.

When you start ... take the race you LIKE visually. The racial bonus has almost no affect, so dont get fooled into choosing your toon because of that racial bonus when you dont like the look of your toon. When you arrive in Mos Eisley, talk to the NPCs outside the starport and within the cantina ... they have a lot of starter quests for you. Adjust your grafic settings if Mos Eisley is laggy on weekends (more new players = more lag). SWG runs best if you have one Gig RAM or more.

    Have fun

    Erillon:

Thanks for the welcome and the advice.  I have read a few of your posts since browsing the SWG forums (for the first time), and am grateful for the tips.  I will look for you in the game once I am there (I will attempt to get Rylaan as a name).  I think starting on Naritus sounds like a good plan from what you have shared.  I don't know if this forum is the proper place to ask very, very basic questions about the game or not, but if it is not, simply ignore them.

    (1) After making my character, will I be thrown directly into a "tutorial mode", or will I have to hunt for this?  I am guessing SWG has a tutorial of some sort in order to ween the newbie in?

    (2) After briefly looking at the professions in the game, I am most attracted to the Artisan and the Ranger, however they appear to be very, very different from each other.  Is SWG a class-based game, where I will have to choose one or the other, or can I mix skills from both the Artisan and the Ranger (Scout)?

    (3) Do I choose a starting planet, or am I assigned automatically to a "starter planet"?  Along those lines, once I have gone through the tutorial and the starter quests, am I free to adventure to other planets at will, or are the other planets level-based as far as how difficult the quests are there?

That's about it for now.  Thanks again.

(1)When you create your character there is a little checkbox at the bottom of the right infobox. I am not sure but it should be checked if you are creating you first player.

    (2) SWG is class based. This is what makes swg a good thing, you can mix and match classes and even erase an entire box or single one to try something different. So you are never stuck with a profession no matter what it is.

(3)You used to be able to choose a starter planet, but now they stick you on tatooine, mos eisley. They probably did this so the newbies can stick together and not feel all alone. since you bought the TE (total experience, you can travel to main cities on any planet for free. You just have to go to the starter city cantina or some other piolot trainer of your choice and get a ship from him, after than you can travel threw the ship terminals free. If you don't, you will have to pay an expensive fee and say if you wanted to go from naboo to dantooine, you would have to make a stop on corellia first because you can't hop acrross (dont know why, but is a hassle and expensive). Talk to erillon for questions on how to do that in game, but your shouldn't worry about it right away.

    Good luck.

    (1) If the tutorial is the same as it used to, it has a nice feel and I'd suggest doing it. In any case, you can choose at the end of character creation. Even after the tutorial, there is a series of quests to guide you even more, in Mos Eisley. Again, it is optional whether you want to do them or not, but I'd strongly suggest it. SWG has a medium-to-high learning curve, compared to other MMORPGs.

    (2) SWG has a skill system that allows you to master two or three professions. I wouldn't know how to explain it properly, read the manual on SWG's web site, then use this tool: http://www.bloodfin.org/modules/mydownloads/viewcat.php?cid=1 to build your character template.

    (3) You start in Mos Eisley, Tatooine. You are free to travel around in any planet. If you purchase Total Experience or Rage of the Wookies/JTL, then you'll have your own spaceship, it costs nothing to travel using it. Some planets have content for all levels, other planets, like Dantooine and Endor, are more suited towards higher levels.
Still, grouping is not level-restricted, you may join higher level groups to gain more xp.

    Currently playing:
    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

OK.  Well I played alot over the weekend and I am happy to say that I love the game so far.  I am grateful for everyone who replied to my initial message, regardless of what your reply was.

Like I said earlier, I realize that I am easily pleased, and very, very new to the game, so perhaps I am still very seperated from the problems.  There are a bunch of things I could list that I wish were different, but I will briefly list the things that I like.

    1) I feel immersed in the world(s).  I enjoy the fact that each world seems different, although I've only been to 4 different ones so far.  I like the fact that I feel "small" in a huge place.

    2) I like my community and for the most part the people.  Now granted, playing WoW for awhile will make just about any group of gamers seem mature and super-intelligent; but I can honestly say I have either been really lucky, or the server I am on is just full of great people.  I have had Helpers literally sit down and answer questions for over a half hour, non-stop, on 2 different occasions.  That just about blows my mind.  I am part of a fledgling city that just started on the moon of Rori.  It really helps immerse you having a home, and a community to be a part of from the get-go.

    3) The tutorial wasn't too bad.  Now, it also wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination, but along with the Helpers, it served it's purpose.

    4) Outerspace.  I find it sort of arcadey.  Surprisingly, I think I welcome this a bit.  It breaks the "serious/traditional" feel I get from being on the ground.

    5) The overall atmosphere of the game.  Let's face it, StarWars is pretty cool in and of itself.  But to really feel like I am just a minor player in this huge galaxy is great.  I can go to Corellia and be a part of a big, fast-paced world, or I can go home to the lakes of Rori out in no-mans-land and just survey.  Most likely not see anyone for hours and hours and hours.  I love the diversity.

So, in a nutshell, I am so happy I tried it out.  I have no clue how I'll feel in a month, but for right now, I am happy as can be.  I still have a metric ton of questions, but I suppose I will learn the answers as I go.

    Thanks everyone.
