I was actually making a point Popular = Quality doesnt hold up. I wasnt commenting on FFXIV at all there. Just pointing out that one does not equal the other so the statement was false.
I can see how you could assume I was referring to FFXIV based on this thread, but that would be a false assumption in this case.
My actual opinion is that FFXIV is not the best coop game. That has nothing to do with it being a top MMO for those that prefer solo quests, story and cutscenes.
People "consume" all kinds of garbage for a myriad of reasons like hype, be around friends, blindly follow, cost, convenience, availability, competition, something different, peer pressure ...
"Different stroke for different folks" is the right point of view to take. I can vouch for the quality of FFXIV; but not it's combat, which I think is dull as stones. Even though combat becomes better as you progress, it is still too much like WoW and needs a complete overhaul to something more modern. But, that is my opinion. If you think the combat is great and doesn't need to be changed; that is fine, I respect that.
The other complain I have in the game is the ability to memorize a lot of things. Sure, some things are progressive and you learn as you go; but when you reach the end game, a lot of what you learn ceases to matter. You are left with having to memorize a youtube video, on a raid or boss, so you don't die over and over.
That of course, is a "me problem". You may learn and remember things quickly, so it isn't a big deal for you. That is cool, but it is a big deal for me. A "me issue" that has caused me to quit the game many times.
I am just letting you know what you are up against. If that isn't a issue, then enjoy the high-fantasy/scifi game that it is. It is story heavy, so expect plenty of cutscenes and text to read.

You’re right popular doesn’t equal quality and people do “consume all kinds of trash”
But trash can be subjective. I have some very well educated and very active friends who think video games are trash. And that you can be doing anything else other than playing video games.
So I like to just say people are different and nothing and everything is trash.

Good times. I have no sage advice to offer, unfortunately. I can say I do mourn the fact we could have a 4-man premade in any game we wanted provided I could get the wife to play (which she us d to be an avid WoW player so that's not off the table).
