imagePantheon Creative Director Says Using Volunteer Developers 'Not Completely Off The Table' To Help Speed Up MMO Development | MMORPG.com

During the Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen community Q&A last night, Creative Director Chris "Joppa" Perkins was asked whether the studio would consider bringing on volunteer developers to help speed up the dev process. In answer, Perkins states that it is "something" the team is looking at.

    Guy says that many modern mmorpgs launch as f2p with microtransactions......also forgets to mention that many of them either ORIGINALLY launched as P2P/B2P THEN turned f2p....some of which already having microtransactions during previous iterations......I love when people like this try and use buzz words to make themselves look like they are the Davids facing off against the Goliaths in their fields while also leaving out key parts.

    They past the point of being able to even afford contract developers that they now need volunteers? Sheesh, maybe they should just let the game go or release what they have as freeware to mod and call it a day on trying to turn a profit on this mess.

    If you only have one full time developer, the part-time are working full time hours, and you're considering asking for volunteers then that's not a business. That's a cult.

    Here is the thing. If there was one magical wand I could wave and any MMO would be done and ready to play. Pantheon would no longer the game I would do that for. It's just not relevant and the funny thing. That's what VR Devs said 2 years ago. They were very clear they were quickly passing the best before date.

    One point of clarification here: if you look at the quote, Perkins doesn’t say he’s the only full time dev on the team, just the only full time designer. While we don’t know exactly how many full time people are working on Pantheon, that distinction is an important one. It may not include programmers, artists, etc in that list. We can reach out for clarification, though. I know last year they said there was about 20+ FT employees, with a total of around 35. But things may have changed. But the quote from Perkins, at least in the context and how he phrases it, doesn’t say he’s the only full time developer working on the MMO, just the only full time member of the design team.

    @Renfail

    Not heard from you for a while and I was wondering, what hope do you see for a CF proper MMO every seeing the light of day and doing well in its own terms? Some have said for a while that we have to except that nothing better than Albion Online could be made, I wish that was not the case but it is where I am at now.

    And with you saying Its dead as a fairly optimistic poster and the target audience for this game that certainly doesn't bode well for Visionary realms.

    I think - as game developers, they should admit they’ve failed and go down with the banners raised instead of releasing a…wierd..moneygrab survival …thing…instead of the persistent Alpha.

    Probably quite a bit before then after it became apparent their old school MMORPG demos were never going to draw enough investment to fund the envisioned game to release.

    They should re-package it as a NFT/Blockchain mobile game.

    I've been a Pantheon supporter since whenever backing became available and I've been defending the game against naysayers for years. At this point, I'm starting to think it's time to eat crow and accept that we'll never get another Everquest/Vanguard type MMO, which sucks because Vanguard was my favorite game of all time, even with all its bugs.

    Vanguard might of been really good if MS didnt bail because of the constant delays.

    I’d rephrase that as: Vanguard would have been great if the constant delays didn’t cause Microsoft to finally bail.

    McQuaid tarnished his own reputation all by himself during Vanguard. This was to be his redemption arc. He died, and so did any purpose to this collection of pixels they call a game. Pull the plug. Let the game die with some dignity, to keep this shitbox rolling is just another insult to a dead man's legacy.

    Brad's story is far more tragic than most people know. All while Vanguard was failing and going through struggles with Pantheon his wife was battling cancer. She died exactly one month after he did leaving behind their 22 year old daughter. You never know what people are going through.

    It's all discussed in this interview with an old friend and co-worker of Brad.

    Daybreak is making a new EQ title but we have no clue what that means. I'm not sure that even a good thing for the IP.
