Lack o' Updates.

darkasterdarkaster Member Posts: 187

First off, I'd like to say, this game has and still is on my top 3 games I'm looking forward to.  I love the concept, and I'm so excited for a game that will keep my blood pumping in every encounter with a mutated creature.  But the one thing thats been on my nerves for a while are the lack of updates.  I understand they need to work hard on the project, and have been doing so, but my hype from newsletters goes up for a while, and then the same news grows stangnant.  I only wish they would keep the fanbase informed a bit more of their progress...

Anyway, I'll still follow this game as always, but does anyone agree with me about the lack of new info?

It can be a little frustrating for us all at times of course, we all want the game and want to know everything about it.

    thats just being human.

To me (and im not expert) Id guess it means one of two things.

    1) The game is still pretty far away and they dont want to hype it up because we'll still be waiting for a year to see it.

    2) They've got a lot done and we can expect a big update soon. (Along with the new website going up and busy preparing for BETA)

    Here's hoping it's the second one ::::20::

Also, they are very open to keeping people updated, they just dont post publically too much on their own website or others, some of the staff read this forum and update/correct stuff if they want to, and also , if you have questions have you tried emailing them?

They are *Really* good with 'customers', I know i've had questions answered which were playing on my mind and I couldn't find the information for anywhere else, if you have concerns or questions id say give them an email, they're really nice ::::17::

So they aren't 'hiding' or anything or inactive

Oh I know Stow, I've been lurking/occassionally posting on this thread long enought know the fe_dev's come around here and check it out, however, I've only personally e-mailed them once, and had no reply image

I know they are working though, and I applaud their working seeing as they have built their entire engine, and it looks great imo.  I just wish they would take a few hours out of work and put together another newletter or two image

Big image to Icarus and their work thus far, who knows, we just might get an official forum soon image

::Edit:: Stow, can you give me the e-mail address you used to contact Icarus? I might have been using the wrong one.

It makes me sad there is so little information released from the devs. I fully understand their take on the situation and wanting to control the hype, but they have a very dedicated fanbase already and we're here to stay. Instead of starve us with no info, I really wish they'd release something to let us know everything is running smoothly.

We're not askin for much, hell even a screenshot of the month or better yet, a newsletter every month or two. We don't need extensive feature lists or a 20 page thesis on the state of the project... just a little shout out to let us know they are alive. This kind of update each month would take /maybe/ an hour out of someones day.

I would rather they push back the release a few weeks and keep in touch with us than what is happening now...

I would consider it bad if they built a whole hype around the game from an early stage. Consider Darkfall Online, for example. They advertised their upcoming product very early and the development process took'em far longer than they thought. Eventually, most stopped paying attention to it or thought that the game had been cancelled or something.

Furthermore, I would hate to see them advertise features early on and then, due to development problems, start announcing that "Well, this feature we won't develop at all, that feature will be released later, maybe on an expansion, the other feature in an upcoming patch" and so on. It's something I've seen in so many overhyped titles...

Their behaviour is quite more professional than this, which gives me more hope of an actually good game.

    Currently playing:
    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

    Which do you prefer:

    Devs spending more time stressin how much longer we are going to have to wait and listing features that could possibly not go to live, rather than working so much on development;

    Or:

    Devs spending more time on development and making the game really really good, rather than constantly keeping their player base 'informed';

Personally, I prefer the latter and Im prepared to wait having been disappointed with alot of the 'incomplete' MMOs already released :P

You are taking this to extremes. Putting out a newsletter once a month is NOT time consuming, nor do they have to pack it full of feature lists. I think the devs can spare an hour a month to tell the community they are still alive and the game is going well. Doesn't have to be anything special, just any effort at all would be nice.

The gamespace is getting very crowded and there are more and more failures every day.  There are tons of reasons they may be playing it close to the vest:

    1.  They are in need of financing and until they get financing they may not have the tools to do a beta.  To beta test you need a large server infrastrucutre.

    2.  They may be looking for a publisher.

    3.  They may wind up just selling the title and focusing on their core competencies which is developing mechanics behind the games.  They don't want to overhype a game they may actually never publish, or could see major changes prior to release due to it being acquired by another company.

The only reason I think they are keeping the lid on a bit tight is because they dont want to create too much hype.

They have given us some really nice video footage, some good newsletters, and they posted here with an update about 2 weeks ago, what more do you want :), you can always give'em an email and ask about their progress ^^

maybe you're asking the wrong questions?

If you mailed them just saying

'game looks good, whens it out?' or 'when is beta'

i doubt they would reply. I know I wouldnt :P

I can think of a few reasons for them to keep things close to the vest.

Not giving any other companies the chance to steal their ideas. Especially since it looks like FE will be the most advanced game coming out ( hopefully the first true 3rd gen MMO ) . The longer they have without other games doing the same things.

Preparing for a lull in MMO titles being released so they can get more bang for the buck when it comes time to start promoting the game.

Getting the game in good working order and mostly finished instead of the usual way games tend to work which is wait till the last 2 months and then try and add a ton of stuff in.

Learn to enjoy the tidbits of info when you find them :) To me its much better than being overloaded with stuff before the game is even remotely ready like most other games do.

Oh I do enjoy the tidbits, If I were one of those who are fickle enough to lose interest as soon as we don't get info for a while, I wouldn't be here! Hehe.

Case in point... Auto Assault. image

What a joke THAT game has turned out to be. First they launch the forums and start accepting Beta applications, then they start doing wave after wave of invites, in which most regular posters missed out.

Then to start rubbing salt in the wound of missing out, the forum moderator started becoming a forum Nazi and began deleting threads of people who complained about the pace of development.

This was followed up with a pre-order sales spree promising entry into Beta if you bought the pre-order. However the final blow came a few weeks ago when the dev team finally realised that they would never make their 2005 release date and pushed back the entire release nearly a year, into 2006!!! Then promptly advertised that NO MORE North American beta testers would be required for the foreseeable future.

So where does that leave all those desperate, over hyped customers who bought pre-orders expecting to get into Beta??!!

    SCREWED, that's where!

Thank god I never bought a pre-order and to that end I am glad that Fallen Earth is quietly being honed away, minus the hype, into a game that Auto Assault can NEVER hope to be.

    No argument here.

We are alive. The game is going well.

We are currently finishing up the last of our tech issues prior to inputting content and getting ready for beta. It's not certain how long this will take, but our guys are working like crazy to get it all done.

I'm going to put in a request to get a more formal newsletter done very soon, cause you're right, it's been too long.

Cheers to all of you for your interest and patience!

While I appreciate the update and all, and it is good to hear that the game is still cooking away, how can be we sure you are actually who you imply you are? image

They can't prove they are legit, as they've said before. But real or not, it'll make me feel better for a few more months which is all that matters :)

Hooray! Unintended impact on the pre-game info! ::::02::

I'm glad to hear beta is getting closer and closer, and hopefully some of the people that actually contribute to the community just might get a post-apoc taste.

    Thanks Icarus ::::28::

Just to let you all know, we have just designated a member of our staff to take the lead on both a monthly news update and a redesign of the webpage. Nothing will really get consistent until we feel the time is right to open up our own forums. However, you should be seeing more from now on.

Thanks again for all your ideas. And just to give you a hint as to where our priorities are moving, I'll invite you all to concentrate your thoughts/opinions/suggestions on the combat system for the near future.

Thanks so, so much for the updates. We as a community needed it badly. This should tide us over a few more months at least ::::01::

Well all I have to say about the combat system, is that it should not be the entire focus of the game overshadowing everything else.

Case in point... City of Heroes.

With NO crafting, looting, non-combat system with limited role-playing incentives, the game has just turned into a beat-em-up slug fest. Boooooooooooooring!!!! image

I mean you log on and what do you do?

Beat up the bad guys, Beat up the bad guys... and oh yea, don't forget about beating up the bad guys!

While I do applaud a detailed and exciting combat system, do not loose sight of the non-combat aspects. The difference between me ditching a game after a few scant months and staying for years is but one question...

"At the end of the day, when the guns lay silent and the enemy is dead... what else is there to do?"

I don't think we'll have to worry about that Ripperjack, according to the site, if all goes as planned:

    Economic and Social Simulation

    * Scavenge remnants of the old world for knowledge and profit
    * Develop trade skills for wealth and power
    * Establish trade routes and caravans across vast and dangerous expanses
    * Players can aid in the maintainence and expansion of towns and outposts as well as owning complexes
