Is the $9999 lifetime sub still available?
I wouldn't play this game just because of that level of stupid.
I think it's presumptuous. They should have just asked for investors at that level.
The lifetime sub for Lotro was £100 and it was probably the best money I have spent in gaming. That was paid just before the game launched mind you, not in some pre-beta stage. Today I would advice against anyone paying for anything before a game had launched and had good reviews, be it indie or AAA. Thats where gaming is now.
I'm done crowdfunding any game. I'd blame CIG but there have been so many other colossal failures that CIG is just one of a whole cavalcade of failed projects. There have been far fewer success stories than failure stories. Even the games that manage to launch mostly struggle to stay afloat afterwards.
I'm going to go ahead and admit that publishers actually know what they're doing when it comes to placing bets, and can look at a project and accurately predict if it has any sort of chance in hell of making. Obviously they also release some stinkers that fail, but if a publisher looks at a project and says "nah, we're going to pass" then that should be a HUGE red flag that the project is doomed for one reason or another.
If you can't get a publisher or investors interested in your game then I sure as hell am not going to take any sort of risk on you. I've been burned enough times to look like a fool already. No need to pile on.

Your last comment reminded me of a somewhat famous video short about dealing with publishers to fund Wasteland by Brian Fargo.

I think that I should change my response here...
I just feel really bad for those who financially supported this... I even feel bad for those holding out hope.
Yeah ...what a mess...

What a dumb premise, the gaming world is filled with gaming projects every single year. Is part of the trade, Publisher or Not.
CIG is showing how massively ambitious games like Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are made possible, and if anyone with a clue about the game development as noticed and has been able to appreciate it too, after all, ignorance is a choice not a state of being lol
