First i'm not trying to flame SWG or anyone that plays the game. I believe a player should play whatever game they enjoy and not worry about what others think.
I really had high expectations for this game when I started playing it at it's release only to be met with the feeling that the galaxy far far away was a very lonely place that was plagued with broken quest, lag, unbalanced classes and on my side (at the time) a machine that couldn't handle the games mechanics smoothly.
Through my frustration I did see amazing graphics and sound for the month I played. Gave it a rest for a few months until I had a better machine to run the game, only to find out that my path of being a jedi was not through the long hours I spent as a teri kasa (spelling) but rather through tailoring.. (ouch)
So I played for a couple more weeks and noticed a few slight improvements but nothing drastic. The galaxy was just as boring as ever..
Anyway that was my past experience of the game. I was wondering how much SWG changed from the first few months of it's release? I know there is an expansion for space crafts. What's that like? Has the game become better or did SoE's changes actually push the game back? What's the game like in the present? Anything interesting supposed to come out in the future?

Others will likely address your post in more detail, just want to give you an idea of what happened recently.
SWG dev team implemented a major change to the xp gained in the game. People who did the math estimated if you played for 4 hours a day, that means killing, not logging on finding a group, traveling etc, just pure killing for 4 hours a day it would take a novice jedi 5 years to become a jedi knight. This same xp change also affected every other character in the game. BTW, this change was "accidentally" unannounced during the patch notes.
Within 24 hours, in one forum post, over 7000 messages by players were reported to this change, this is the direction the game has been going in. The game you know isnt the same as it is now. I havent even gotten into the Combat Update changes.
Try going to Amazon to read (player) reviews of SWG total experience. Its pretty even as the ratings are about 2.5 stars out of 5. That way you can determine for yourself from what people say if you want to return or not.
Combat system changed completely ... more dangerous, no more god-mode buffs, no more attack spam macroing, no more "everyone-wears-composite-armor", much more grouping. Needs some getting used to. They put a combat level on top of the skill system .. a debatable change. It means entertainers and crafters without combat knowledge have a much harder time out in the wilderness (its ok, but you have to be careful).
Unlocking Jedi is now quest based ... actually quite fun. Your main becomes Padawan and you get a free second toon on that server.
From Padawan to Jedi Knight its a boring, mind-numbing combat grind that will make your brain ooze out of your ears.
The Rage of the Wookiees expansion has added much needed content to the game. Many quests, multi part, multi planet, space/ground mix, with nice rewards.
no more TEF .. you can be civilian, soldier on leave, combatant (faction warfare against NPCs only) and special forces (factional PvP). Much better system. Player drop bases to affect planetary control ... whoever side is in the lead determines if the planet is owned by rebel or imperial NPCs. Which leads to fighting around Galactic Civil war bases.
Space mining was added, and many new ships. Some of them are ALMOST capital ships. Capital ship in SWg are in the making.
ok .. thats for now ... check the SWG official homepage, especially the Friday Feature section.
Have fun

First of all, battle has become more challenging, which means people tend to group more (and I find that a good change), but it's also become closer to a traditional EQ2-style combat. HAM bar doesn't work the way it used to anymore, as Action and Mind are now simply two "mana" bars.
I've enjoyed the space expansion a lot. If it was a stand-alone game, I wouldn't have paid attention to it, but as a new activity in an MMORPG it's fun.
Rage of the Wookies added a lot of quests and new content. Exploring Kashyyyk is what I've enjoyed most nowadays in SWG, there's tons of nice quests with good rewards. And the upcoming expansion will also offer a fair number of new quests.

I too became totally frustated with the state of the game at the time of the CU. I was one of the 1star haters that badmouthed the game in an as intelligent way that I could. I wrote letters to anyone that I felt would listen. I posted any any swg related forum and got many of my threads deleated by mods on the official forum. I was a total swg junkie and it felt like I just lost my best friend.
So I gave up all hope that the game would roll back to were it left off, pre-cu, when it was clear that SOE was not turning back. I quit and walked away. I went on to try some other MMO's but none kept my interest for more than a couple days. ie:GW's, CoH, EVE, Planetside and DAoC. I did like WOW for a while but it got boring.
Even though I didnt involve myself in these swg threads, I did read them daily. Reading exceptionally positive threads by Erillion always stuck in my mind. And Noobia's responces are rememerable too. She has the most eloquant posts that I always agreed with and wished I had written. So at this point a few days ago I figure after all the money spent on other games and server time, what do I have to loose. I went and got a new copy of TE, loaded it and almost instantly became an addict again.
It is different than it was. It is the same as it was. Im still relearning the game mechanics on how xp is earned but by trial and error Im figuring out how its done. Game credits have become way easier to obtain by running JTL missions than before.
So there is more fun to be had with this game. There are bugs, but every game has them too. Naritus is a great server. I have one of my old chars reactivated on Ahzazi which is one one the heaviest populated servers allegedly. The activity on Naritus is putting them to shame.
They added the village and you now get 2 minutes of content between grinding the equivalent of 100 full professions.
Smuggler still cant..... SMUGGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Added Rage of the Wookies to market SWG and Revenge of the Sith. Things like the droid necrosis who is an exact copy of Grievous. And so on. A three year old could have thought that content up. And probably did. But it makes the players happy so ....hmmm
And the population is still around 250k or lower. Proves beyond a doubt the game is broken, FUBAR and definately not as good as people say it is. It needs some serious attention.
Dont feed the beast though. Stay away. the more people join, the more SOE and LA will actually think they are doing right. Maybe when they are losing money they will finally give attention where it is due.

I'm still very new to SWG, and lately my respect for those that hate it has grown a lot. It isn't the traditional hate for a game: People that are angry about it are just dedicated fans that seem to have gotten left out in the cold by SOE's arbitrary implementation of patches/nerfs/optimizations to their professions. I guess this kinda thing just happens in a big game, not everyone likes the changes that happen. It must suck ass when someone puts a year into a game and suddenly are left to find their class is less useful, or useless because of patches.
I am loving the game right now, I seem to be on a server (Naritus) that is thriving with new players and a good community. Last night between 8pm and 11 pm pacific Mos Eisley was literally packed. Doing a /who in zone showed a constant 32 people with the message that the list was truncated because there were too many people. Hanging around near Thella (sp?) the n00by quest lady showed a constant flow of new players (mostly human but I saw at least 3 wookies too ) running back and forth doing their n00by tasks, me included. At midnight I did /who and saw that there were 25 players in zone so that is about bedtime for most, but I did /who just before I logged off at 1:15am and there were 27.
I truly hope that the wishes of people like Kai, scorpes and madazz to name but a few, are addressed fully or at least enough to make them come back to the game. This would only improve the game as they really seem to know what they are talking about. Although rather angry at times, this I think stems from their complete passion over the game and the Star Wars saga, and I can only hope that their visions are somehow incorporated as I know this would Improve the game. I think this can most effectively be done by civil objective posting on the official forums, suggesting and reporting bugs and never giving up. I for one have finally activated my official forum account and am going to be reporting bugs and making suggestions, feel free to address yours to me, whether in post or PM, and I will diligently post them in your stead.
People can change, I certainly have in the last few months (quit smoking!!!), and so can a game. Here's to hoping the game improves for those who dislike it, and stays fun for those of us who do.
EDIT: content
Unfortunately I was burned by SWG in Beta and about 4 months into release. My wounds have never recovered and I doub't they ever will. I don't hate SOE for what they did to the game (I still pay money for PlanetSide), I'm just unbelievably disapointed in them. My signature says it all...
That's my only real grudge so far, as smuggler have no content actually relevant to smuggling. At least you can craft spice and role play a smuggler, even have smuggling run events with imperial guilds and such.
