Thats why for EQ style old school games Monsters and Memories should be on your radar if it's not already. They're out "EQ'ing" Pantheon and actually have a playable (during events for free) old school alpha. And it looks and feels very similar to OG EQ. And they're even going about a development process in an old school way which means no charging for early access/alpha/beta, doing invites to participate for free, and making visible progress between alpha events. Sadly any chance of Pantheon ever being released died long ago. Though I will say I believe Pantheon has a greater chance of being released in some form than Camelot Unchained does. I do feel the Pantheon dev's are well meaning just in way over their head, whereas CU is just a scam by Mark Jacobs to bilk old school nostalgia.

ZERO faith in the project and like I said before: They are doing the impossible- developing a game backwards.

They're deciding if it is a space sim, high fantasy, or a minecraft clone by the end of this month.

Monsters and Memories is DEFINITELY on my radar! Love the old style graphics as well.

No, but after he leaves college if he has an IT background he can join Visionary Realms and help to finally release the game.

I am not a graphics snob as I play games like original P99 so I can take a lot of art styles. What I cannot tolerate is poorly done ones. You can have an art style even 2d pixel art that can look very good. Just take a look at Octopath and you will get what I mean.

As @terazon mentioned above... What part of the game do they feel is "there yet"? What part can they point to as being in the state they want it to be? I'd be interested to see that part.

Yes I think this is a good point.  When you look at all the mechanics, combat, spells, gameplay, questing, crafting etc... Is there anything that actually feels like yes this could make it to a Beta phase right now in its current form and them be happy.

Is there anything they can actually check the box and say, this will be in the game?

I think the answer there is NO.

I dont think there is a single thing that exists in this game right now that could make it to a release stage without signficant change, I am not just talking graphical either.

I really dislike the new art it seems souless and plain almost crowfall but worse. I think they should have started with a smaller world and built the game with smaller zone expansions. Instead I'm stuck with 250 bucks in the game while it seemling get whittled down from its original form. Smaller teams with less money are bringing out amazing games. A few races, a few zones, one qtr of the levels then expand expand expand, I mean there is going to be a sub for this game.
Meanwhile Alpha players get screwed over because they over sold it and cant afford the server costs so I gather from videos. I still want this game to be good but their recent moves have costed me a lot of faith in the project. Good luck Joppa.

They have flip flopped so much, and what about the Loot extraction PVP game they decided they wanted to bandwagon on.

The people who picked this up after Brad quit have no vision of their own, just bandwagons they try to jump on.

They were entrusted a lot of money to make an old school EQ style MMO, and nothing they have put out so far shows me that is what they are making. I am glad I didn't give them any money, and each time they talk my belief in the new leaderships ability to make a game worth the name fades.

Brads games were not perfect, there is a reason vanguard tanked after all, but what he did have was a vision, he didnt chase the bandwagon he tried to improve the genre.

These guys, are just milking what they can.

I have had people tell me the 247 loot extraction game was never a separate thing and they were never gonna monetize it, which tells me those people are absolute cheerleaders for this game and unable to see reality when it comes to this game. And the art style sucks, it looks so Playskool bight and overly colorful and just soul-less plastic.

I suppose they both could be correct.

Maybe those people were told it wasn't going to be monetized and then the developers suddenly realized they needed an influx of money and changed their minds.

That's why I tell people if they want to give money to a project "great" but do so with the idea that it might not come to fruition OR that things can change and change drastically.

But for some reason people who give money to these things think it's all in stone and everything will release according to plan.

Nah, most people knew the Devs for these projects were being overly optimistic in their projections, but timelines for some of these have gone way beyond reason.

I know what I want, the Devs to publish their actual status and what steps would need to happen and by when we can see a possible release, even if it's 2030.

It's the roaring silence on these subjects that aggravates me enough to continue the vendetta ad infinitum.

I'm going to try and shame them into coming clean, or die on this hill trying.

In my field, you have to know how long it will take to develop, how many people it will take, what the development cost is going to be, and how much profit from sales you expect to make and when.

That is BEFORE you get funding to start a new project.

And if you miss it by a lot, you usually are fired. If you lie about it, you get blackballed from the industry.

If you try the startup route, then some allowance is made especially if you are doing something new, so there is no previous history of development. Again though, if you are caught lying, it's lights out.

It's amazing what the gaming world puts up with.

At the end of the day, it's the COMPANY that sets expectations.  They over sell, over sell, over sell.  Then under deliver, under deliver, under deliver.  Should people know better by now?  Sure.  But that in no way shape or form excuses gross incompetence or outright lying in order to get money. And when you are 2 to 3 times your development time and 3 times your budget (or more) it's one of those two options IMHO.
