I really wanted to like this game because I love 40k lore. I just can't do turn based combat. I really tried, but when it takes 15 minutes to get through some random encounter I'm out, sorry. This is very much a me problem. The game is quality for fans of 40k, table top style games.

I do enjoy turn based a great deal. I love the extra strategy it seems to foster. I loved those ass long battles in Divinity Original Sin 2 , some were easily 70 minutes long. Remember that oil fight?

I am a bit worried about the "early missions being brutally difficult" part though. That can be worrying especially when you're still learning the game.

I bought this on PC when it launched.

Very good game, essentially XCOM but with a warhammer skin which is perfect for me. Good classes, good combat, plenty of depth.

I only really had three complaints when I played it:

1) Lack of Diversity of Enemies

The game is/was entirely Grey Knights vs Nurgle. No other races are involved, no other factions of chaos. You won't be killing any orcs, or eldar, or tau. Just endless amounts of Nurgle's followers.

2) Some Classes are Hard to Get

There were 8 classes when i last played. 4 of them you could recruit at will from the barracks. The other 4 you could only get as random rewards from missions. On my first big playthrough, 2 of those extra classes literally never came up as rewards! That's 25% of the classes that I couldn't experience. This struck me as bad design.

3) Dead Knights can be used to Boost Living Knights.

Your grey knights can "commune with the dead", unlocking more progression for them. A standard knight can only unlock about 40% of their class by the time they hit max level, so if you want to fully maximise one of your squad, you need them to commune with the dead.....a lot. 

However, it is extremely difficult to die!

On my main playthrough, I didn't have a single knight die. Not one. That is despite deliberate attempts to kill off a bunch of them. I tried really, really hard to get my knights to die, so i could buff my other knights. Just never happened.

Other than that though, great game. the synergy between classes can be really good, though sometimes it can get overpowered. Plus, space marines are just awesome, it remains a lot of fun to slice up a chaos demon with a chain sword, or explode someone's head with your bolter.

I particularly liked that when you crit hit, you get to choose which body part gets hit. Chop off an arm to stop the enemy using their gun. Destroy a gun on that mech walker. Stab someone in the face so they can't use their magic. Good times

I would also recommend Necromunda: Underhive Wars if you like Chaos Gate.

Very similar gameplay (xcom style) and progression. Similar procedurally generated maps. More emphasis on movement around the map than xcom / chaos gate (lots of zip lines), however enemy pathing isn't great.

Ah yes, Frontier Foundry. Also known as the UK branch office of Denuvo Software Solutions GmbH. Their worship of the spiritual successor of SecuROM and one of the most infamous PC malware is nothing short of legendary and borders on fetishistic.

Luckily, there are so many other - and better - turn-based games out there that it's easy to give this Denuvo PR agency a wide berth.

Not every rating given is worth much without actually listing the faults. Some faults can be gotten over but others can be core to the game. It depends on how much tolerance you have and if a game has enough good points for you to overlook them. Watch some videos of gameplay and see for yourself if you can. It's not so difficult because I have found that the things that annoy a lot of people giving negative reviews is something I can manage to get around. Sometimes it is as simple as altering a path or making sure you do not do something that causes a crash.

I do agree that games should not be released with bugs but it also depends on how annoying that bug is. All in all it is 3 bucks. Not worth wringing your hands over.

The necromunda game is lacking in typical story. I don't think there is a "win" scenario where the game is complete. You just start a gang, and then fight over and over and over.

Very much like the traditional necromunda board game :-)

But gameplay wise, progression wise, level wise, customisation wise, it's just xcom. Only downside (as mentioned) is enemy pathing. It was very weird when i last played. An enemy would run halfway round the map just to end up 1 square closer to you before finally attacking. It's like there was some logic that said "if you *can* run 50 squares, then you *must* run 50 squares".

Seriously though I think at times you're overly cautious about games and wasting your time from what you post here about trivial considerations that can easily be outweighed once you start playing and enjoying a game.

You are probably right, but I have so many games bought and unplayed that I have no impetus to buy anything unless it ticks my picky criteria.

I just think they should tighten the RNG when it comes to rewards. Or even allow us to choose what we get. Really, it's just an artificial playtime multiplier.

Awesome game otherwise.

God RNG I hate RNG I am still struggling in Darkest Dungeon 2 . Really brutal game but I went back, looks like I'm a glutton for punishment. Trying a Hellion, Grave Robber, Highway Man and Occultist group now. Haven't unlocked the Hellion and Occultist fully so going though the first few acts again. I failed at the 3rd Act boss again with a Flagellent, Highway Man, Plague Doctor and Jester team. Total wipe in a few rounds. Really pulling my hair out.
