I wonder if the issue with the puzzles was there with the original game and the developers remained faithful or if they dropped the ball?
The puzzles were great, my guess would be that was in the context of the era, maybe now they seem a little "under produced". In other words you don't get enough of a graphical bang for your time? If they changed the puzzle's and they don't work well, that's down to this team.

I admittedly never played the original, but I've played pretty much every Resident Evil game. Without spoiling too much, the puzzles in the remake were initially quite clever, but then the same formula was used over and over and the puzzles weren't really puzzles. They became spinning numbers on a dial while following a reference sheet.
Alone in the Dark is very well received on Xbox right now with both the base and deluxe versions over 4 out of 5 stars (~4.25/5).
Most of the complaints and criticism are due to some bugs and environmental snags that require a reload, in a game that doesn't allow manual saves. I agree those are frustrating and detract.
The voice acting, characters, and environment are widely praised. Some point out that even though the graphics aren't cutting edge the environment building is very good, and most commenters point out that it's scary and spooky. Overall, people who were looking for survival horror, got what they came for and were satisfied.
I did notice that those who claimed to have played the originals rated the game higher than newcomers or those who didn't make that claim, and a few newcomers were put off by the old school design and mechanics.
That's my summary of the Xbox comments so PC people can compare to Steam or other platforms.

The game currently has a 64 for PS5, 65 for Xbox and a 67 for PC on Metacritic. I think that carries a little more weight that random user reviews on the Xbox.

That is a tough score, I tend to find anything under 70 is not worth it there have been acceptations but only for my favorite genres which this is. But it is also a remake, normally an automatic pass, but I can't remember the game that well, so still a possibility for me.

You keep thinking that, if it works for you. On Xbox, people have to actually own the game to rate it. That matters a lot more to me than some social media circle jerk site. At least it does to me when I'm thinking about playing a game.

I was talking about critic scores. People who were paid to play the game to completion and provide their opinion on it.
