It's so dumb that MMOs celebrate real-world holidays -- especially real-world religious holidays. Even when they "adjust" the meaning of the holiday to fit the world's lore, it's still eggs and rabbits, or decorated trees and reindeer, or whatever.

Here's an idea: Why not be creative and make up a holiday for your game world, and celebrate it once per real-world year? Put it in the middle of June when no one is dealing with real-world holidays. Have all kinds of weird, non-Earth traditions and an actual story that you actually wrote instead of borrowing from Earth history.

    Fucking hacks.
(To be fair, FFXIV does have one holiday to celebrate the game's anniversary, and it's so much more meaningful and touching than all the Valentine's Day and Easter and Christmas garbage that they also throw at you.)

I would think that many games try to incorporate real-world holidays simply because that is when a lot of people have additional time off from work or school.

I don't see anything wrong with using real world holiday events, but sure focusing on the games own lore should be the primary source for any new content.
