Latest Star Wars Galaxies: Legends Community Transmission Brings Players Up to Lightspeed on Future Content Plans | MMORPG.com
Issue #17 of the Star Wars Galaxies: Legends Community Transmission is out now and brings the community "up to lightspeed" with what's going on in SWG:L.
Funny to me that developers with hundreds of millions cannot make a good MMO, but little indie groups are doing it for free.... Just shows you that passion means more than money. People just go to work to collect a pay cheque, they do not go for the love of it anymore and it is why AAA gaming is dead.

Yeah you got that right. EQ project 99, City of Heroes all so much better even in the new content they've created than most AA games nowadays. its just fucking pathetic.

Pretty easy to when you're building off someone else's existing work. That and they are free to do what the please because there are no investors to make happy and no monetization to worry about, no Lucas Arts to run things through. That being said, they obviously have been able to revive a dead game and keep it going, so credit for that.
best mmo ever ....... the thrill it was to be a part of gaming when gaming was fun and people in a Cantina actually meeting up and socializing , talking about things that were going on in-game . and if you weren't there 20 yrs ago you have no clue what i am talking about ........

I was, it was a pretty social MMO in the precu era. People actually used local chat. I haven't played an MMO since where you actually lived the character(s) you played. There were betrayals, marriages, RP, decorators, chefs, entertainers who were like in game celebs, folks who didn't do any combat at all, and all the drama you would expect in a sandbox MMORPG+social sim.
I think the only MMO that has that social game/life aspect sadly is Second Life. Most MMORPGs you just play, SWG you actually lived in it. Lots of the folks who played SWG never played any other MMOs. It's not the same these days in any of the emus , at least as far as I have seen. People still do there sim life things, just not as openly social.

Hell I'm old enough to remember when the brunt people did this in real life. As much as I love and respect computers, the internet and gaming. In many ways the rise of the computer age has sadly been a scourge for our social society.
That rant over, the argument of how the indy companies can do things better than big corporations holds water. One thing I think you younger whippersnappers forget is that what you call small indy companies today are what we called big gaming companies back then. The market was small the fan base was smaller. The amount of consumers who could afford the technology to enjoy this kind of entertainment were a drop in the bucket compared to today. Back then a small group of like minded individuals had a dream and worked in tandem to make that dream a reality.
These days a group of rich clueless empty suits create a team of strangers and then harass them into making the most soulless creation that will make the most money as quickly as possible.

That has nothing to do with the developers and artists themselves, but corporate greed and terrible management that tries to monetize everything and forces games to be build around any type of monetization possible.
"FUN" is no longer required, but instead addictive loop holes to make people spend as much money as possible instead.
That people even want to work for these kind of studios anymore.... that should be the question. It's got to be demoralizing work, to basically being forced to make casino / gatcha games instead of games that are actually fun.
There are lucky still studios out there, that are not under constant pressure of investors... but they are becoming less and less.

Indeed, while I applaud what the likes of Homecoming has done to say their content is "all so much better even in the new content they've created than most AA games" is pure fantasy.
