I always fall back to emulated Asherons Call or Everquest. I like to find servers that mix up the rules or progression a little bit so its a new experience with a nostalgic feel.

For me it's currently Final Fantasy XIV, there is just so much awesome music and beautiful environments in there and lots of chill content. All the content expect the more high end fights are pretty chill and not very intensive and of course there is also the whole crafting/gathering game within the game.

Mine is EVE Online, an amazing MMO.When I need something really, really chill, I'll do some mining in EVE, but otherwise, it's a bit too nerve-wracking times to be a "comfort" game for me.
Same here. I love hopping in my Procurer and just mining for hours, or doing some simple distribution missions.

Mine was always EQ2 - the main sound track for Qeynos still brings back fond memories of the game.

Same here and for that I always play on those Time-Locked-Expansion-Servers (TLEs) to get that old cozy feeling but the thing is that those servers never were true 'classic' servers but this time in june they will release their first 'origin' server where everything will be set back to how EQ2 was in 2006 (oldest code they've found) and I can't wait for it!

Other than that I always found FFXIV to be quite comforting, mostly because of the music, artstyle and slower gameplay.

Will the old neighbourhoods and their quests be back and you can get a room there too?

Yupp, they will. There's a beta running right now and until june but you need to be a subscriber to be able to participate. Unfortunately from what I've read so far it's kinda buggy and most testers doubt that they'll be able to fix everything until launch mid june.

If I want to simply blast bad guys, I'll pay CoH. I regularly start and run pickup groups.

If I want an MMO with more lore and story, it's LoTRO.

Or I'll play NMS for that old Wing Commander/Freelancer feel.

Or an older game like Civilization 4 or Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

    Ahh buggy that is unfortunate.

I always wanted to get into EQ2. But the amount of Lore and such I need to get into, as well as all the content ... it's so cyclopean that it almost feels sisyphean in nature.

Never felt that before. A most curious phenomenon.

It's not exactly welcoming to new players. Imo.

Usually I'd agree but actually this only applies to EQ2 live servers with their 20+ add ons. With the upcoming origings server 'Anashti Sul' you will only have the base game without any add ons (think WoW classic) but with the games systems being from 2006 instead of 2004. New add ons will then slowly be unlocked. So honestly this might be the perfect opportunity for you. I just really hope they'll manage to fix all the bugs until they launch it mid june or that they at least postpone it.

There is also the encyclopedic amount of lore to get into. As I said, it's difficult to truly get into. Even with the ... AI helper system etc.

For MMOs Eve Online, SWG, and New World. After all these years I just took the path for crafting blueprints in Eve Online. For FPS Titan Fall 2 and Hell Divers II. comforting until I play the vets in TF2 who own it!
