Is this like a new game mode?

I assume you will still be able to play in the older universe that does have npc's etc?

It's an Expedition which is a game mode of sorts. It's more like a time limited server setup with a free "battlepass" and lore story.

Each Expedition presents a unique experience through a custom set of rules, gear, and objectives. They've all been multiplayer community based events so far.

One thing I love about Expeditions is that the rules and setup challenge players to use different solutions to accomplish goals. There are multiple ways to solve different problems in the game, with one being a more obvious common solution. Expeditions push players out of their comfort zone and teach them how the game works.
