After dipping into what Bungie has in store for us with their first Episode, Echoes, and experiencing more of what The Final Shape has to offer, I still think that returning Destiny fans should come back to experience the end of the Light v. Dark saga for themselves.

Yeah I will say the new player experience is pretty disjointed. I returned having left after the Witch Queen expac. I was missing two whole Subclasses on top of Prismatic, and if you dive right into The Final Shape the game doesn't explain at all how to unlock these or really even that they exist to unlock. Your only hint is the two missing diamonds from the subclass selection. You have to go purchase the respective expacs and run their campaign in their entirety to unlock them. I figured this out with a lot of Google. Nothing in game explains it. That's not really consistent with other MMOs which have some sort of catch up mechanism to bypass that for new or returning players. The only upside is the previous expacs were on sale at a pretty deep discount so for about $10 more I had both.

If I were a brand new player that hadn't played or followed D2 at all I doubt I would have known what to look for or search on Google to figure out there were entire subclasses missing.

They really need to detect where you are in the story and put up some big screen that say "hey you really need to go do these other things before starting this expac". Either that or give some catch-up mechanic.

There is a little past history screen where it walks you through the past story and let's you play a key mission in each previous expac to catch up on lore, but this doesn't unlock the subclasses. I found it confusing to do the light and dark mission, get to play with Strand, but not have it unlocked or explained how to unlock it.

That's my biggest beef with it. I also agree The Witness is the least intimidating bad guy ever. Looks like he came out of one of the Despicable Me movies.

I do not understand how anyone can fundamentally call this a good story, and on top of that a good ending to a 10 year saga? The story paddles around a LOT and you don't really do anything new until the final mission. Early missions retread a lot of red war. "regather the vanguard," "dispel their insecurities," ect. ect. Then you fight the witness (the boss fight has it as a turret with one attack), then you fight it again in the raid where its in a different form, then you fight it again in the 12 man mission. The story stops itself 3 times, and ruins its own momentum; I also found that it made the raid feel insignificant in the grand scheme of things (and given the loot, it does feel pretty lack luster). On top of this 2 of the characters in the campaign aren't in the game in any permanent way anymore, with cayde literally being nostalgia bait. It doesn't matter too much though since zavala is the only character in the campaign to do anything??? why is this a zavala centric dlc in the first place??? Not to mention, on top of all of this, this DLC does not answer any important questions or change the world in any significant way. This story is such a mess, and I have to wonder how bad the critical thinking skills on the people who experience it are to call it "fantastic."

Another massive thing this DLC fails to do is anything with its core game. Bungie is leaning more into this really bad slop grab bag of activities that are half baked and built to be removed. What arises is that activities feel super shallow in the long run. The episodes system is just seasons reformatted to retain people better (not in the good way either, in the gross fomo way). I can't honestly understand why so many reviewers are so light on this release. There are blaring fundamental issues, issues that have been around since the start of this franchise. This is a 50 dollar DLC!!! that is nearly the price of a full game!!! I'm begging you to stop ignoring how much these things cost, and consider it into your review

Good review! Definitely a hell of a lot better than Lightfall and even a little bit better than The Witch Queen. Very happy about this expansion.
