What I want to know is will it have the original spell effects thst the eventually toned down? I miss those so much.
I don't know. It's Daybreak afterall. It's all minimal effort with them.
I am more curious how they will manage to revert all the stat changes SOE did back in the day, the itemization, etc.... without any experienced devs being around anymore.
I have a feeling they going to break half the stuff and it will be a complete fiasco.
You can say a lot about Blizzard, but just look how much time and effort it took them to create WoW Classic and they actually have a lot of the devs around still.
So no, I have no faith in DBG and it will probably end up being one big disappointment as usual. So many changes have happened to EQ2 over the years ( lot of very bad ones, failed re-itemization scripts that broke more than it fixed, etc ), that DBG is better off sticking to Time progression servers.
I played today but I saw things that of course they had to add because of $$ they said no day break store items but you can buy exp potions mounts and backpacks because why not
Reddit EQ2 community seems rather excited. Lots of folk also trying to rain on the parade and burst bubbles by saying wait and few weeks and it will be dead. I am excited by the sheer energy that seems to be flowing at the launch but every time they release one of these throwback servers they do well for awhile then peter out. They have never tried a 2006 iteration though so there is that.
Isnt this getting a little old? Both EQs have drubbed the nostalgia idea to death, yet people still pay even though its about the 15th time they have done this.
So full of crap. First, EQ2 was released in 2004, not 2006. Second, the original primary/secondary class system is not there as they have no backups and wouldn't understand how to make it work even if they did. Third, all of the quests removed over the years are gone for the same reason.
There is nothing "classic" about this server in any way, shape, or form. You can get the same experience on the live servers by ignoring expansion content and save a sub fee.
The 2004 release of the game had the base classes and the Isle had both factions on the same island not separate. In 2006 they also removed a lot of the neighbourhood quests. 2006 they made a lot of changes but a lot of previous TLEs have never gone back to 2006. They are calling it origins for that reason.
This is the reason the fans of EQ2 are excited. I guess the MMORPG genre of late has had some slim pickings so fans of the genre are enjoying what they can. No harm in it.
I for one love going back and playing this game. Newer MMORPGs haven't captured my attention.

Then I guess it’s not getting old.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

The old Island was brought back a long time ago, before DBG, at request of the player base.
I know, as I was there when they brought it back on a new server and restored many of the old quests as well.
The fact is that this is just another cash grab by DBG, by scamming people into buying a subscription again, by false advertising this as a 2006 Classic server, but then further down in the article they post a whole exception list with features/mechanics they could not restore, which is practically everything that would actually make it a Classic server.
It's just another TLE (Progression) server in a different disguised jacket.
But this is just DBG in a nutshell. They have no competent devs nor any resources to actually make a true EQ2 Classic happening.
So they just keep scamming people with stuff like this, to trick them into buying a month subscription to check out the new server.
They brought back the old island I am perfectly aware of that but never as it was originally though in 2004 where there was no split between Freeport and Qeynos and with the base class quests. That they never did. The base classes are gone forever it would seem along with the quests. Also they did not bring back all the neighbourhood quests either, many people noticed the missing quests from the neighbourhood when they restored them.
I played this game from beta and for almost 3 months when it released. I have gone back to live many , many times. For me personally there is still a lot of magic there.
It's a cash grab for sure but for an MMORPG that has far more content and soul than many games released in the past ten years. Players who play it will be playing in a rich world with fantastic lore and quests. So if they think it is worth it obviously it does not matter how much the sub is because it is well worth the sub to experience grouping and a lively world even if it is for 3-6 months. How many games that are out now can truly bring back the old grouping, questing and journey that EQ 2 offers?
One other thing as this is abundantly clear the TLE servers work every time they release it because they bring back many players willing to sub and play on them. I think it is a testament to the long lasting appeal of EQ 2 and a scathing report on the current sorry state of the genre if an older version of an MMORPG like WoW and EQ 2 can drum up more interest than a new expansion on WoW or EQ2.
Wanted to write something but stumbled upon this video that sums it up pretty nicely
This is not a TLE, instead it's the closest we can get to a EQ2 classic server bringing back mechanics/stats/etc from the games 2006 era. The server is bursting like no TLE before and people are having lots of fun for just paying a sub. P2w is limited to a bit of bag space and overpriced 10% exp potions and a mount. As someone who's quite sensetive about p2w I can say that I can totally live with that. TLE's before I'd agree with the sentiment of them being a quick cash grab but this time I'd say that it's totally worth it and they did some effort.
