"Interestingly enough, the servers will be getting a new event called the Veil of the Nine. This Ringwrait-themed event will see players attacked by the Nazgul. "

    Then they're not classic servers.
I think it’s fine to introduce new events on classic servers.

Besides They’re not really classic servers as they don’t have the game mechanics that the original game had.
This is misuse of the term and seems odd, if the game mechanics are the same does that mean there are just less zones to go to?

They are essentially servers without certain expansions. What they really are, are time gated (forget the exact term) servers where players can play up to a certain point and then continue once they add an expansion.

I just cant fathom not having earlier code from the start. I thought saving versions was "a thing." I guess not.
The thing is, players who go on about nostalgia talk more about the old gameplay mechanics than not having to bother with xyz gameplay. I don't remember anyone going "Ahh wasn't it great when we could get no further than Moria?

I think the idea is to "escort" players through the expansions at the same time.

What players asked for were classic progression servers. What we were told is that they can't so all we got were fresh sub-gated progression servers.

lag has been a consistent issue since the game first launched, it's an issue with the server software itself.

Maybe a lot of people have forgotten the insane rubberbanding when trying to transition "server slices". Or entering a zone and seeing no mobs and not being able to chat because both the NPC and chat servers got out of sync with the zone server and it took them forever to reconnect. Might as well mention the insane input lag when the servers started to struggle.
Well absolutely none of that has ever happened to me.

My warhorse slides all over the place though.

Yes that’s true. Which goes back to a previous comment of mine questioning why we they didn’t keep different versions of their game.

I'd go back to LotRO in a heartbeat if they had a genuine "classic" server, with proper mechanics from SoA times. That was by far my favourite time in MMORPG gaming, and for a PvE experience it has yet to be beaten (for my personal tastes!). I even loved the ettenmoors of that time!

As to why SSG can't do a classic server? I can think of a few reasons:

    1) The codebase has changed hands a bunch of times.

I have no doubt that Turbine, Codemasters, Daybreak and SSG all use version control systems, which would keep a full history. But there is no guarantee that each company would have passed on the full version history to the next owners. Past versions of the game might have contained code that was propriatary to that company and not safe to pass on.

    2) They might not know the old server setups.

Even if SSG does have a full history of the main game's codebase, they might not have a full history of the server architecture. The different ways that the databases were configured. Whilst version control software for code is well established, the same isn't true for server setups. So, SSG might not be willing to put in the time to figure out how to get the old code to run on whatever servers they do have.

    3) They might not have old hardware

Given that LotRO started development in the early 00's, that was still a time when a lot of companies were running bespoke servers. We don't know if Turbine might have commissioned bespoke hardware to run their game, hardware that is no longer available. Again, SSG might not be willing to spend the money converting the old codebase to run on contemporary hardware.

They also probably would not spend the money necessary to get it up and running anyway.

There's a private server based on the vanilla game.  Not sure how far along it is.
