I feel "humiliation" might be a tad too strong a word, but you're on the right lines.

Just don't forget the "opt-in" side of things. With PvE, we generally have complete control of the experience. We choose when to start a fight, who to fight with etc.

With PvP, you don't always get to control the starting point. So, there can be an element of shock too, tho generally only in FFA PvP games, which luckily are quite rare.

Plus there's the exploit side of PVP especially in loot heavy games. I remember one time in WoW this guy just kept spamming me with duel requests. I was on my shadow priest and a few levels higher than this guy which, honestly, should have been my first hint that shenanigans were about to occur. We start the duel and I fear him and start melting his face. It's pretty obvious how things were going until ZAP. He one-shots me with his gnomish engineering thing that he twinked on his alt by feeding himself engineering mats from his main. Har har. He, of course, declined all my rematch duel requests because it had a 10-minute cool down. Point being PvP players are rarely interested in a fair fight. If there's an exploit they'll use it, and if not then 10:1 odds suit them just fine as long as they're on the 10 side.

Personally I save my PvP to the jiujitsu mats and leave the video game stupidity to the kids.

You can't caricature all the gamers who like a playstyle from the bad eggs. It is down to the studio to make sure such unfair advantaged don't exist. But also, why duel? In any MMO that offers other way to PvP, the last thing I would do is duel.

One reason I'm so disappointed with the direction FO has taken is that the sheriff system did an excellent job of driving the negative elements of the PvP community from the game.  Basically, the pro-law justice system attracted griefers to go after the bandits.

While flawed, I think that identifies a good starting goal for these types of systems.  Make lawful PvP (the sheriffs) the attractive option for the asshats whereas a good role played bandit is for people who are there for something other than easy loot.

Oh it wasn't my intention to imply ALL PvP players are exploiters and cowards, but enough of them are. I still enjoy PvP in the right setting. I used to live in the DAoC frontier I think it's called. Logged hundreds of hours in WoWs battle grounds. Same for the PvP in WAR. However count me out on any open world PvP especially if corpse looting is involved which is the context of this thread as far as I could tell from reading previous posts. If it's not forgive my lack of clarity. Every open world full loot PvP game I've tried brings out the absolute worst in people. Shadowbane, EVE, EQ PvP servers , and WoW PvP servers are my experiences. Yes I realize WoW doesn't have corpse looting, but it sure has plenty of assholes.

I read this somewhere a few months ago...

Modern life makes much more sense if you view it all as a series of humiliation rituals, versus serious trends in culture.

You said it.  You just want to kill defenceless pve players without other people attacking you.  And you call yourself a pvp player.

Don't know what else to say.

The Sheriffs go after rogue pvp players.
