Kate didn't start playing Soulslike games until the last couple of years, but found that playing them alone left much to be desired. Thankfully, Final Fantasy XIV's Extreme and Savage content exists.

I think more people should play "souls likes."

If done with the right attitude they could really learn something about "letting go" and not having failure define them.

..... So what, we're just applying 'Souls-like' to anythign that requires even a remote amount of thinking and effort now, or has a shred of difficulty?

My static of over three years now recleared EX1 this week and first-time cleared EX2 Wednesday, and so I ran an instance of EX2 with a roleplay friend last night and they and a bunch of others, minus a healer and tank, were new. I think the US gets a lot of bad rap for being yappy - and to be fair, I was the yappy one - but seeing that wall we hit our heads against slowly start to crumble felt really good. It's really fun to just progress, fall apart, and come back together until it clicks.

Also the EX and raid battles this time around are so incredibly fun.

The story in the thumbnail on the main page is written in third person, and edited into first person when you click to read the article. Something smells fishy.

That's an editorial teaser for the article, the "thumbnail" you mentioned is likely written by someone else. Hence the change in style. Either that or a Chat AI summarises and creates a teaser, seems rather a simple job to get out an AI for?

"With a roleplay friend last night and they and a bunch of others" - Yeah, who in a MMORPG counts other than the Rpers, I would be the same. :)

Funny, I don't mind souls-likes at all, but I just cannot stand the way boss fights in FFXIV and WoW work. They are just so un-fun to me, and it's not from fear of failure.

I threw myself at bosses and failed for hours on end in Elden Ring. Then again, I didn't feel any particular rush when I finally beat them -- I was just glad to be able to move to the next part of the game. Maybe I'm broken.
