It's the small things in life that can put a smile on our faces, and bending over to pet a virtual kitty cat in Final Fantasy XIVor heading to the Moonfire Faire are some of them.

Believe it or not, this is a HUGE improvement over their original MMO account interface. You basically had to hire a team of hackers to set up an account for FFXI. But you're right -- it's still way too convoluted.
I've enjoyed parts of the game off and on for quite some time, and I never realized until I saw your simple statement written in black and white how true it is.
Thinking back over my recent experiences in the game (catching up on slightly more than two expansions over the course of just six months to get ready for Dawntrail), there were ups and downs. I had a lot of fun, but there were times when I just felt annoyed and couldn't put my finger on why.
Now I realize that most of those moments of annoyance were when it felt like the game was just trying too hard to defy expectations or be edgy or "take it to the next level." It's all well and good to push boundaries occasionally, but it feels like this design team takes "no such thing as a bad idea" WAY too seriously. There were a LOT of bad ideas in the previous two expansions (and no shortage of them in Dawntrail), but because the framework is so solid, it's easy to ignore or forgive them.
That is probably not a good thing in the long term, even if it keeps the lights on at the studio.
