Worth starting?

Hey, I've played most of the major MMORPGs (EQ,DAOC,SWG,WoW etc) and I'd like to give AC a try. But I'm just wondering is it possible to be a newbie in this game anymore? Will there be anyone to group with or is everyone too high lvl now? And is there still a decent amount of players or are the servers pretty much empty now?

Take a look at these two threads:

    1) AC1 whats it like?

    and

    2) Whats So Good About AC1

It's not my intent to just brush your questions off, as they're certainly worth asking. I just answered a couple of them in the first thread a few hours ago, though, and answered the rest in the second thread a few days ago. There are other replies in those threads already, so they'd be a good source of information. Cheers.

Grouping is unnecessary throughout the game, and it can be fun when you get high level. Old time players love helping newbies, and the game has a lot to offer. It has more newbie quests than ever.

If you'd like someone to help you out, create a character on Frostfell (which I believe is the most populated server) and if you wanna try the permanent PK lifestyle then start on Darktide... I have characters on both and I love helping new players out.

    Frostfell Characters
    --------------------------
    Chi'en Ching Lung
    Masta Mage OG
    Elluwak Meteu

    Darktide Characters
    ---------------------------
    Vanderlai Silva
    Bas Ruten
    Cyker

Aye I noticed you said you had charachters on frostfell and darktide.

Is the pvp on frostfell any less good or enjoyable than darktide? Im not new to pvp based mmo's and I love to pvp but I couldnt find anywhere in teh manual on the big differences between the two servers other than pvp on darktide is free for all, all the time. How do I get to fight other people on frostfell if its not ffa?

    Thnks in advance :)

For PVP, then Darktide is where its at.... TRUST ME, you will get an adrenaline rush from the PvP on Darktide. Because, there is a DEATH penalty called Vitae AND a property penalty. Based on your level, you will drop items on your corpse which the killer may take if they so chose. That has always caused me to have a rush when killing someone or merely avoiding death when encountering a much higer level PK.

Don't worry though, the Vitae is like a 5% penalty... which takes about about 5 minutes to work off with hunting. As for the property penalty, MOST people on Darktide carry "death items" they are high valued stones, rings, or other items that really serve no purpose but they are worth alot on pyreals (in game money). The property penalty for my 108 Mage is about 12 items... so I carry 36 pairs of Battlepants (worth 13,000 pyreals each) and about 40 Shoyanen Portal Gems (worth 20,000 pyreals each) because I wear a suit of armor that was been fully tinkered (player upgraded with salvaged steel) that I DO NOT want to lose.

PvP on Frostfell is merely a joke... because they have a system called PKLite... where you type /pklite and then your player becomes a temporary PK anf when you die you get no death penalty and no property penalty. However, if you want to be a true PK on Frostfell, you can go to the Altar of the Bael'Zharon and change your character to be always a Player Killer but you can only kill other Player Killers... you wont be able to target the other non-Player Killers... and you get vitae and lose items when a Player Killer.

So, you can PK whenever you want on FF.. but most just do PKLite... so you dont get any spoils of war, at least not like you do on Darktide

In game, if you type, "/friends" and press enter, it will show all the names in your friends list and which are online.

There are no up to date guides on making characters now. Here are some tips. If you are a mage, you need to at least train all 4 magic schools and mana conversion. Arcane lore is optional for the mage. If you want to specialize a magic skill, you can do it later in your character's life. Melee defense is also optional, and specialized magic defense is another option. All work fine.

For melee, this is what you need. Spec a weapon skill. At least train melee defense, arcane lore, healing, and item enchantment. That's all you need for a basic melee character. You can spec some of those skills, or add more magic skills, trade skills, or whatever you want.

Missle characters are about the same as melee except you need to consider that you don't get the added protection of a shield and you need to worry about crafting arrows. If you make an archer, consider getting fletching and alchemy. If you don't want those skills on your archer, put them on an alternate character for arrow making. Alternately, you can hire other players to make your arrows.

If you make a mistake building your character, you can fix it by like level 20 with a quest for changing attributes and skills.

the skill sellback and train quest though will only let you drop one skill from either Specialized to trained or trained to untrained.. same with the train quest.. but you must have the skillpoints to go from untrained to trained or trained to specialized.

and then there is a month timer till you can drop and train another. (i could be wrong on this though, but i think train and sellback are linked meaning you can only do one choce also (either train soemthing or sell it back).. but you can hold onto the gem you didnt use and use it when the timer is run out.

The timer is 14 days. It was set to 1 minute for the past several months to give old players who returned for the expansion some time to "refit" their characters to the current environment, but it was changed back to the 14 day timer with the latest update.

Even though it is an older game and the graphics are not specatular, I would try it if I were you. I played if from the first day it started and played for years. It is by far the most fun MMORPG I have ever played. I have not played it in some time so I don't know what has changed but given the choices of the weak MMORPG'S out there now I would play it until a better games comes along. I hope that is soon.
