Just wondering, is it still possible to start a new character from level 1 these days without help from your guild/friends. These days when I walk through Norrath all the old popular places I used to go to find groups as a newbie (crushbone, commons, oasis, Lake etc) are empty. Bearing in mind I haven't really played the game since pre-Luclin, are there still zones to go to for exp at lower lvls these days?

The new tutorial will get you through level 10. You might meet people to hang around with as you level there also. Check the Newbie board here for a list of the 'hot spots'-- SOE periodically changes these, but the zones on the list are ones where there is a bonus to experience. On some servers, the /lfg tool gets a lot of use at all levels. (On others, it is mainly a tool of high level folks, it would seem).
Honestly, the low levels aren't what they once were. The game is definitely top heavy these days.On the other hand, some of the old zones you mention have been empty for a long, long time, even when there were still a lot of new characters being made. There's just better exp elsewhere.

I am a brean new player to EQ, played other games just got talked into by an old friend to start playing. The above poster is correct, the game has an awesome tutorial that will get you to level 10 or 11 depending on how much you stay in there after you ahve finished your tasks.
After that you progress to the Plane of Knowledge and there are 3 NPC that give tasks and armour quests. They will send you all over Norrath in level approiate zones to keep you xping until you hit 20. I am just shy of 20 myself, have found a guild to grow with and flat having a ball.
