Josh is no stranger to MMOs, but one MMO passed him by when it first released: New World. With the release of New World: Aeternum, Josh jumped into the MMO on PS5 to see what the buzz was all about.

Interesting. I've put about 1600 hours into the game and I don't really see a different endgame than other MMOs offer. In same ways, it even offers more. There are a lot of dungeons which reward a variety of endgame gear. There's a raid, and open world raid boss, pretty well done pvp in the open world, outpost rush mode, etc. It's pretty solid in my opinion.
Yeah you are correct. However, there's nothing remarkably different between the pre-Aeternum end game and the Aeternum end game. Most people who quit the game previously quit based on the end game experience, not the leveling experience even at launch when the leveling experience was horrible. My point is that if you left due to the end game before you likely aren't going to have your opinion changed now, BUT I say that not having gotten to end game on my current play through so I may be very wrong and kinda hope I am.
I will say I'm up to my mid 40's now and absolutely loving the game. I'm trying to put my finger on why but it's just a lot more fun now. I think it's a combination of how they retuned combat and I finally found a build I really love. I'm playing a void gauntlet+flail and shield focus tank. On paper it should suck because it's not meta or at least on paper shouldn't be. That being said it's working very well for me allowing me to clear whatever content that's reasonably in my level range with ease. I went ahead and slotted carnelian gems so I can hold agro and I enjoy rescuing solo player who have gotten in over their heads. I get thanked a lot which is nice. I like to be nice when it really doesn't benefit me in any way. I help folks in the other factions all the time.
Anyway my very first character at launch was a tank and it was pretty miserable to level. My DPS was utter trash and killing even a trash mob took upwards of 30 seconds. Getting an add was just frustrating because there's another 30 seconds. I'd get in areas where my kill speed was lower than the respawn rate and it was just a complete slog to finish anything.
That's not the case with my current build. While I definitely don't have the dps of a DPS build, I kill fast enough for it to be fun, and I'm still a tough as nails tank that has self healing to boot. That's the reason behind the Focus stat build. It works. I don't heal like a heal spec life staff guy but I don't really need to because I have heavy armor and a shield. I also like the convenience of the void gauntlet being able to switch to ranged mode so I can pull mobs out of a camp. Although I have no problem taking on 3-4 mobs at a time as well.
Long story long I'm, for the first time in a long time, in that place where you can't wait to get off work so I can go play. It's been a while since I've been truly excited to play an MMO, and I'm a little shocked that it's coming from New World of all games.
