Earnings per year actually isn't very good. We all like to guffaw at the total number, but when you keep in mind that number has come in over the course of 12 years now there's actually been quite a few games that started development after Star Citizen, were released before Star Citizen, and subsequently have earned as much or more than Star Citizen. Moreover if and when Star Citizen launches there's not going to be some big payday because everyone who was interested in the game enough to buy it already has.

If it's been in development for 12 years, that still revenue of 60+ MILLION/year on a game that isn't even complete. There is NO comparing this to a normal game. No game, or movie, or other entertainment project has EVER taken so much money (particularly for giving so little).
Well earnings wise Diablo 4 and Helldivers 2 are both over the billion dollar mark. Both games started development after SC and released before. GTA 5 has over $8 billion in revenue but it released back in 2013. The call of duty franchise is over $30 billion.
If you're talking about budget to make the game you're right. However I question if they are just dragging their feet because they think they'll make more money selling ships than releasing the game.

Uh, Fortnite makes around $5-6 Billion every year.
Not so sure about that. For every player who has heard of SC there are probably 10 who haven't.
Still plenty of potential new customers to fleece...err, market to.
At the moment their potential market is only people with high end gaming PCs. Probably a lot more than 10% of people who own those follow enough gaming news to have heard of Star Citizen.

As I understand it, this number (750 mil) does not include the private investors who've ponied up another ~75-100 million. And who have to be paid off for that investment in the near future (well, near future in SC terms).
So, it's an even bigger boondoggle than it first appears!
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
From what I've read, the employers are treated well and are considering CIG the best workplace they've ever been to.
If the game flops, then so be it. The project is not a scam and as long as the people are enjoying what they are doing, then there isn't much to add. I have dropped a handful of bucks on the game years back. I knew what I signed up for and I do believe they will release a game that I enjoy, at least as much as any other AAA game these days.
If they manage to make a game like EVE, but as a first/third person shooter/flight game then I will be very very happy.

There is a heck of a lot of gameplay in EvE, that's a big bar for CIG to jump over for what looks like a simulation atm.

As someone that has been playing EVE Online and SC for over a decade now (2 decades in case of EVE) ... there is a heck of a lot of gameplay in both.
And while the walking-in-station and personal planetary combat attempts in EVE failed several times (and they try it again - GO GO CCP !) it works quite well in SC if you invest time in learning how to do it.

These games have been developed and fully supported by big gaming studios and/or big publishers with multi-billion dollar financial backing in the background. These are bad examples to compare it with Star Citizen.
For a community-supported Kickstarter like game development like Star Citizen their achievements are quite unique worldwide. And from watching the development en detail through their regular magazines for supporters plus talking to developers at gaming conventions I can say that they are doing anything BUT dragging their feet. Sometimes when you try to achieve more than what is industry standard, technical challenges can delay a project. Maybe even force you into iteratively reinventing part of the technical framework, especially in a fast moving field like computer and game technology.
I find it quite fascinating to follow (and support) this development over the years. And contrary to what a lot of critics post ... there is A LOT you can do in this game (and a lot of it has no bugs interfering with the gaming experience). Like in Star Wars Galaxies you can already make your own stories, events and plotlines without having to wait for the "official" content. And it looks amazing :-D

Feel like we've been posting gameplay vids once or twice for years whenever the "no gameplay" conversation comes up so it's clear people don't even look at them, that's the level of laziness most gaming discussion have gotten to
One would think that having youtube and twitch would be all it's needed but perhaps it's a generational thing of needing to be hand-fed everything. Maybe preparing that retirement house living by role-playing in advance

No wonder other games can't get any revenue. Everyone is banking on the vague possibility this game will eventually become a reality.

That's not much, especially for a project like this where the development leaders may be suffering from OCD related to perfectionism.
