"Nothing says massive quite like an open-world event", nothing says solo quite like an open-world event either.
To my eyes open world events where the solo answer to raids and possibly the most important thing about gameplay is the competition, the competition between the different types of gameplay. Different types of PvP compete against each other and if the rewards are not different one will win out. Different types of PvE compete against each other and if Open world events are that good who will do raids?
So you need to keep the rewards quite separate and don't mix them, indeed as most people raid at the end of the week/week end, why not do open world events at the start of the week?
The games I remember for open world events were Warhammer, Rift, and GW2.....Most of the early ones were really fun, but as the levels went on they seemed to garner less and less interest from the players.
