Where is all the money Tik Tok is making going to?  Formats like that can turn the youth against the US government in a heartbeat.
If TikTok can turn the youth that quickly, when it comes to pointing fingers, I'd take a hard look at our education system.

If you can have a kid for 8hrs. a day for 12 years and they get turned by TikTok, then you're a colossal failure.

Both can be true.  Not necessarily an either or situation here.

You literally asked us to dive into a political question... so this one is on YOU mmorpg.com!

The Defense Department absolutely knows that no Chinese company is exempt from The National Intelligence Law which requires that all Chinese businesses and citizens operating overseas including in the United States must gather sensitive information from host countries and their companies and to provide it to the Chinese Government.

This is, quite literally, the purpose of the National Intelligence Law. The usual way companies try and pacify us is by claiming that some of their subsidiaries are not directly controlled by this law, but I think anyone with a modicum of the way things work understands that is just smoke and mirrors.

Now, that said... the timing of this is of course politics on the US side. I can assure you that the DoD had this same understanding of Tencent 6 months ago, or 2 years ago... but it's being announced NOW because the current US administration is ending and a new one takes over in less than 2 weeks.

It's Being announced NOW because; have you seen the nonsense taking place in Social Media? They're affirming that an issue IS REAL to the General Public that Facebook won't fact check in a month in the interest of National Security - it has very little do do with sane politics.

When you have an Incoming President so off the rails (Panama and Greenland BAD - Friends making inflated profits on over inflated Grocery prices, okay now though) the Defense Department decided to try and help out some of our socially manipulated brains into seeing a bit of truth before truth becomes an even more serious issue in the next few years.

I couldn't imagine why the Department of Defense would be skeptical of a Russian Asset sitting in the White House.

"The United States Department of Defense swears" ..

Wtf ? Swears? You started this post in a very denial way.

    Let me guess, trump voter?

"This begs the question: Does the Department of Defense know better than us, or is it just the usual American nagging of perceived enemies abroad?"`

Wow! I mean, they are The Department of Defense, not your ..Tank from FFXIV who knows everything and everyone else is bad.

Geez. Of course they know better than us. If something bad happens, you will be the first to point fingers to them because "they didn't do their job".

    Bad Article is bad.

    .."article" , lol.

I do talk in the end about how it's entirely possible they do know better, but the process of categorization is classified because it's, well, the USA Department of Defense. They sort of just made a declassified list and said, "Trust us, bro." You're allowed to do with that whatever you want. It's the fun of news consumption. I'm on the fence here, but it seems companies' names do get taken off if requested and investigated thoroughly.

I really REALLY dislike our US government right now, especially our DoD and certain people in it; and so much of this nonsense is being fueled by two guys who keep refusing to release all of this proof to the public, i mean first it's ByteDance, now it's Tencent they are baselessly vilifying.

Sadly so far a lot of this craziness appears to be boiling down to mixtures of xenophobia and a couple strong man-types throwing tantrums.

Or… just taking the actual Chinese law at face value.  Sometimes it’s not xenophobia but common sense.

Forget the whole xenophilia thing, i was trying to refer to Tom Cotton and William M. Thornberry without dragging names into it....

And I guess I just don't like the idea of seeing stuff like this in video game spaces....

Also i have a lot of love for China and a lot of things that come out of china.... so it's hard not to get offensive about this; because whatever people feel about the military powers; lots of normal people aren't involved in any of this, id like to think that chinese video game developers and artists care very little for war.  :/

I'm not going to defend China (or more specifically the CCP), but I'm not that naive to not be aware that the US does the same things under the table in the name of "keeping the country safe," like when they spied on EU officials. And Europe wants to do similar things with stuff like removing End-to-End encryption "for the people's security." But that's what we know about because it was leaked, so we can only guess what's actually being done. Yet somehow, despite our very own governments doing these things, the danger is always China, and only China. Press (X) to doubt.

It's not as if everyone is just looking after their own interests at the expense of everyone else's, allies included. However, it's always easier and convenient to point at an external enemy to keep people distracted from what you're doing yourself.

There's also the point of the timing, but someone already talked about that and I agree.

Anyway, in other news, the sky is blue.

The US doesn't put people in jail for wearing a Winnie the Pooh t-shirt. There's no moral equivalency.

Let's not ignore the context, please. We're talking about spying on other countries and how that's not news, not about the rest of the awful sh** that China does.

I mean does the us spy on people? Sure, but does apple unlock peoples phones for the fbi? They don't and they don't have too everything a chinese company knows about you has to be turned over to the ccp. Its not like they have disappeared rich business owners or tennis players or basically anyone else who falls out of favor. To be open and fair the us has held a large number of people at gitmo without trying them for a long time but those are terrorist who killed people not a game company owner who criticized the ccp.

The only thing even close to that here is the going after trump one party did it and they just got swept out of office. so people in the us have recourse if they don't like it. In places like china or north korea or russia you go to a "penal colony" or "reeducation camp" and may never be heard from again. So, ya your right the ccp is looking out for their best interest but not really in the same way.

As I said, I was talking specifically about how everyone spies on everyone else, and how no one should be surprised that China also does the same. Especially since that happens even between allies.

And yes, there was that leak about the NSA making Microsoft leave backdoors in Windows for their use, for example, or how they handed them user information too. As I said, you can only guess about what they actually do that hasn't been leaked. So, saving the very obvious distances in regards to individual rights, on this specific context everyone is as dangerous as the rest.

Even assuming what you say is right.  Is it not prudent for a country to take steps to prevent spying and data collection on its citizens by a hostile foreign power?  I mean, this just seems like basic stuff.

And I'm not saying that they shouldn't. Just that this is nothing new, nor surprising, nor unexpected. As I said, it's done even to allies (like the confirmed case by the Danish Intelligence of what the NSA did to the EU, which was published by every major newspaper several years ago), so it's obvious that it's also being done to and by the rest. So, of course the CCP, which is a step above on this regard, is doing this (and more, probably) towards everyone "in their interest," no matter what Tencent says.

Everyone that isn't living in the land of unicorns and rainbows should be already assuming that their info is being gathered by everyone and their mother at this point of the digital era, especially if they're (voluntarily or not) in the digital world in any shape or form. Not because they're an interesting individual (most of us aren't, even for the CCP, so keep playing your PoE2 and the rest), but just in case they are, or because their data by itself is. What I mean is, so what? What will the average user of this website do? Avoid Tencent and every other Chinese company? Good luck with that.

It is not usually a wise idea for governments to disclose how they know what they know about about other countries military and espionage capability. Hopefully the reasons for that are obvious.

As this report seems to span two US administrations that does add more weight to it. I would say it is all a matter of degree, we already know that the Chinese military has a close relationship with many of China's civilian companies. It is just a question of how far?

This is a terribly loaded political thread, but it does not get much more directly to do with gaming than this. So I think we should have had it, but shut it down if it goes crazy. :)

If China is going to ban Facebook and YouTube then the US can ban Tencent.

Your opening sentence made me laugh.

Agreed, this is a political barb from the government in its ongoing tit-for-tat with China.

I have a lot of confidence that the DOD assesses its threats and will deal with them accordingly, to whatever extent that's necessary in their view. All the political punditry we see, hear, and read doesn't mean much to me beyond that. That isn't going to affect my daily decision making when it comes to entertainment. When and if the military takes action on something, then I'll take it more seriously.
