Trying to add an avatar and its too big

I edited this image and played with it a bit and it took ages as im not a graphics designer, and not anywhere close to being one but its now like 250kb and 8kb is the limit i saved it on adobe photoshop and i dont know how to get it to jpg and how to make it smaller, can anyone help?
PS. Im a Mac user so i Don't have paint which is what im used to...::::26:: I would attach it but Im not sure how to it comes up with a prompt to enter the URL where my image is, its on my desktop though lol... -_-

    First flatten the image if you have not done so (layers -> flatten image). Second, use the option save for web. If you use jpeg, adjust the image quality to medium or so (about 35). Also, be sure to check your resolution. For the avatar, it shouldn't be any more than 72-80.

    well i did it, thanks, but it dint turn out very good, i wanted a different colour background and im no good at cropping ::::21:: I could do it using paint but this photo shop is confusing, so many big words, do you know how i can add a background without having to crop with my unsteady hand?
