well thats a bit much for me to read all of, but I agree with the title somewhat.

I think the problem is more of the gamer, we have already done it and its just not as exciting as it used to be.  If GW was the first MMO you played you probly would say its the best thing ever.

Its kinda like weed, its great, but after you have been smoking it for a few years its just not as good as it once was and it will never be like it was your first time, so why not just quit.  Well its because there are so many kinds of weed and you want to try them all.

mmorpgs are the exact same thing, so sorry bro I dont ever think that it will be as good as it was.  For me it was DAOC and I was able to add up the hours I played using the /play command. 2880 hours in total,  thats like 1 and 1/2 years of work.  I dont think any mmo will be like that was.

Honestly, I didn't read it all.

Though I do agree with the title and I can only hope that the next generation (DnL, Roma Victor, etc.) of MMOs doesn't make the same mistakes WoW and EQ2 did, though I guess EQ2 is allowed to be an EQ clone.

Well Zenodice, I read your whole post and could comment on it, however nobody else is *actually* reading it so I will just give you my opinion.  Suffice to say that I agree with your arguement, but I think you miss the mark as to the root of the problem.

IMO the root of the "modern MMO's suck problem" is that the majority of the MMO subscriber base has matured beyond the developer's ability to satisfy.  What do I mean?  Well suffice to say that *most* North American and European MMO players started playing in their teens or early 20's and are now in their upper 20's to mid 30's.  Players that are just starting MMOs are doing so in their 20's or as children/siblings/friends of older, experienced MMO players who help and coach the newb player.  Unfortunately, the developers have not matured their games with the subscriber base.  Although developers *think* they are deriving new games that don't follow the EQ, UO, etc model, in reality nothing has come out that has truely revolutionized MMO's beyond the originals.  Yes there have been minor improvements, but there just has not been *anything* that produced the same "oooh, aahh" veteran players got when they first played, consequently veterans quickly get that "been there, done that" feeling after about 2 weeks and this feeling is passed on to the newbs that they were mentoring through the MMO.

So Zenodice, you are correct that the evolution of the actual game mechanics and depth of lore has been a contributing factor of why we leave modern MMO's, but in the end it is because the developers of these games have not matured with us, the gamers.

I read it, I don't think I played the "hardcore" games. I agree with you on the quests, they tend to be about the loot and xp entirely in most games and I think thats the wrong approach (unless its a special unique loot of some kind). They ought to be story arcs with at least some characterization and puzzles. The downside is that those have to be well-executed or they tend to be just flat-out annoying.

For most of the rest of it, I disagree. I don't want to run the the uber rat race. I don't want to have to deal with some nasty elitist council of uber twinks (I did play a game that had a super-pk-clan once, they threatened to kill me if I told this guy where I found some new mob and it was where "their" new mob spawn was). The so-called politics all seem like petty snits to me (not that politics in real life are any better, but at least there they have to kiss babies instead of killing them). Instancing for crowd control seems so much more pleasent.

For some reason my other post isnt showing up so im rewriting it. If it shows up later just ignore it. i never would have gave AC a look because it is so old. How many more years does it have honestly before you think they will end it? Im a hardcore gamer (10+hours/day). Ive played 5 different modern and semi modern mmo's and they all have their good points but they all give be the ive been there done that feeling too. SWG remains to be the game im playing now. I do run a guild like the one you mentioned in your post. I love roleplaying and SWG makes it easy for me to do. It has player ran economy and cities. What ive always suggested to the games ive played on their feedback areas was to make max level infinite. AC seems to have taken that practice by upping the max level with every exspansion according to you. Would it be worth me coming into AC at this late of their life or should i wait for a similar mmo to come out. What future releases are you looking at that might be worth leaving AC for? Thanks for the great post and any replys you can give me.

Thanks for the replies and feedback, I was posting this purely for the heck of it and figured i'd toss it up here before I submitted it at another site.

As far as joining AC, bear in mind this is NOT intended to recruit people into the game, it IS 5 years old. So I would say that despite the recent expansion, unless you play really hard you won't even get to see the high level content for a long long time. The game IS amazing but it definately seems too late for new people to get into it, though Turbine seems to think otherwise it's fairly obvious that the game itself has nearly run its course. If you're looking to play competitively I wouldn't say asheron's is a good choice because there are people who exploited old and broken game dynamics such as xp chains and macros to reach insane levels which you will never touch. If you just want something that is amazing and offers essentially an endless challenge than knock yourself out. If any of you decide to play and choose Morningthaw as your server feel free to give me a /tell on Sanguis Sparta and at the minimum i'll give you a crash course on the game and some bare essentials.

As for games i'm looking to in the future, currently, Vanguard seems interesting but by far the most interesting game to me looks like Darkfall, though i've been following it since it was first in alpha so it seems a long way from being finished. But yeah, there's my two picks, i'm more of a fan of soloability and pvp in MMOs and darkfall seems to be both those things so it would be perfect if it was well done.

thanks for your honest opinion. i agree it would really suck to start in a game thats been out for 5 years already. ill wait for something new to come out. im not that big on soloing i like to be grouped with others and have fun. i do like the option to solo if i cant find a decent group or dont have enough time to play in a group. roma victor sounded really nice until i read the fps part of the website. ill admit ive never tried a mmofps so i can say from experience on what they are like. part of the fun to me is being able to watch yourself in combat with all the gear and nice weapons you have earned. you cant do that in a fps. well thanks again for your reply.

Aye, Roma Vitctor actually DOES look interesting as well though I think it might not be as popular as some people think, i'll probably still give the beta a run.

Frankly I couldn't be arsed to read all that, but when you started pigeon holing people in the first couple of paragraphs by calling them noobs and fanboi's for liking a particular game I lost interest.

you sir have summed up what i and many other people have been complaining about for yrs really i am sick to death of the malaise  which seems so prevalent in the design of mmorpgs or if u prefer a catchy label "the dumbing down of a generation" of mmorpgs that is image i mean wtf happened with the 2nd and 3rd gen of mmorpgs ? they all seemed to copy the same formulaic approach at designing a game "eq cloning" then nerfed grinding becuz the short bus riding casual playing nublets didn't want a "challenge" they wanted an "easy button to win teh gamez" after this they than nerfed PvP either by defanging it or establishing instanced zones to prevent KS which would in turn lead to PvP or a combination of the two because the short bus riding casual playing nublets

"didn't wanted to be gankzored or greifed by st00pid hardcore g33ks who playz 24/7" These are just 2 problems that have manifested themselves in mmorpgs of the 2nd and 3rd gen.

Basically to recap combine both apathy on the part of the devs to development a unique and innovative mmorpg rather than the next "eq clone" and the whining of the casual mmorpger and then the devs actually listening to these blathering morons = a recipe to create a cap out in a month ,  no risk no reward carebear eq clone that only accomplishes to line the pockets of the devs , and to perpetuate this blight onto the whole of the mmorpg industry , because after all if you cant beat em' join em'

in conclusion the future of the mmorpg industry can go 2 ways either die off due to stagnation or hopefully for our sakes reverse this trend and actually begin to break away from the mold of the "eq clone" in fact if you look at some of the 4th gen mmorpgs being developed you can actually see some progress being made in this regard however until their awaited release i suggest you either dust off AC , EQ or perhaps DAoC and game on ! image

Lol Ferrox, it's obvious I hurt somebodies feelings by calling their new fav game a game for fanbois.

If you can intelligently argue otherwise, please tell me why any discussion on the problems which I outlined in the wow section degrades into "omfg your stupid WoW rulesz1111!!" then I will reverse my statement. The fact of the matter is, the game is for lack of a better term, the current "flavour of the month" along with it's cohort Guildwars, and yet already people are realizing the game for what it is, a simplistic hack and slash with little to no longterm value.

I'm not saying every single person who enjoys WoW is a fanboi and I never once called people n00bs except at the end in the poll. What i'm saying is, the vast majority of the player base for both WoW and GW have the intelligence and maturity of 14 year olds and act accordingly. It's a completely different type of player base when compared to the older, more mature MMOs and you can see it the second you enter the game.

Join a game like Everquest or Asheron's Call and you find creative character names and people who actually enjoy developing their characters. Join a game like GW and WoW and the vast majority of characters you see are nothing more than slapstick pop culture referances or down right immature rediculousness. An example would be, NinjaBoi, Pirate Dude, Ninja Pirate Mc Deathkill (basically anything relating to ninjas or pirates, the most inane fad on the net currently), or something even worse, the dreaded Rick James or ImRickJamesBish, occasionally punctuated by Homer Simpson or Super Saiyann Vagitta.

My point being, the general maturity level of the playerbase in modern MMOs is decreasing more and more as they are appealing more and more to "casual" gamers and simplifying to draw in the masses of younger players. This is the primary reason that drives me away from most modern MMOs, the hordes and hordes of begging, whining pre-teens who defeat any immersion into the game.

once again im right with you on this one. i quit coh because people were dancing everywhere for no apparent reason along with making childish remarks. then there GW not including the games faults there was children dancing and head banging in cities for no apparent reason. in a mature mmo you wont find this because if an adult wants to go dance he will log off the game and go to the closest club or bar and do it. the names i agree are ridiculous. i have a name i go by on swg and its kanosi wraven. sounds like it could be a real person and thats because i created a character not a toon. us people that agree on this need to keep in touch on these forums to let each other know if youve found the game that will carry us on once our old games die on us.
