understand their position ukraina. they are a small team that was created to create only Dark and Light. Their budget is limited and they are looking for those who are dedicated enough to help them out. Dont judge unless you know the situation of both sides. Have you even been in the beta, if not then thats a more reason to get on your back and be a monkey
I guess some just like to argue. The whole process of posting and reading replies and then trying to overturn someone's point is all that is needed for some.
A lot of these conversations are based on opinion not fact. DnL is not out yet so therefore nothing can be said for certain yet. I know I will pay to play and I will probably like it. There will always be someone to trash DnL but as long as you yourself like the game it doesn't matter and won't chage anything.
they made this mmorpg because they desired to make a great mmorpg. its as simple as that, even i can start one right now, will i succeed obviously not cause i literally have no real experience but if you have the experience and will to do then you can (sounds like a freaking "you can do it!" ad). Not having a large budget just makes your possibilities shorter then expected, so if paying to be in the beta will help them make (what seems to be a great sounding mmorpg) then im all for that. w00t for the underdog! i say, w00t for them!
If all we ever do is support the big boys, we are left with the boring status-quo... we actually hurt ourselves.
These small guys risk shite-loads with their new ideas, and many die. We should support them, or at the very least not get into corporate sabotage by spreading rumors, and half truths... are we that stupid to cut off our nose to spite our face?

What a freaking moron.
I need to mention only one word.
Most of you know it
...........
Mourning.
Paid beta my ass.
Why do you feel the need to press Enter 15 times after every half-sentence? I know why! You have nothing at all to say and want to make it look as though you do. DnL's gonna rock, thank god I won't have to play with the likes of you.
Originally posted by mugboy312 have a better idea of what they are dealing with toodles, if you dont have a good arguement then just be quite.
I don't NEED a good arguement to make the statement I made. The fact is the company 'likely" cannot continue with the current over-head they have. They need a new cash influx to stimulate some growth and testing for the game. That's perfectly understandeable. I don't fault them for this in anyway.
What I fault are the "people" who "want" a game to latch on to so badly, they are willing to pay to beta a game. That initial statement I have no problem with. The part I have the problem with is these people pay to play a beta, but DON'T DO ANY TESTING!
Instead, they come to random gaming forum(ie: mmorpg.com, gamesyp, IGN, VN, etc etc)and complain about how crappy xxx game is because the server always drops or there are no quests or there are no character creationg options.
It's when the PEOPLE/fanboi's (however you like to phrase it) start trying to make up excuses for the gaming company, that makes me laugh and want to stay things.
This same exact thing happened ALMOST play-by-play for Mourning, albeit there was a LOT more flaming with teh DEV crew of Mourning, which in effect really shot things to the sky in a hurry.
There are ALOT of MMO's in testing, being developed, being worked on etc etc. The MMO market is VERY tough. As others have said, pushing things too soon, ie: SoR, Horizons, Mourning inevitable lead to a rapid death to the game, or a very bad "time period" in the time table of the game.
Anrachy Online experienced this same ordeal when they first released a few years back. I don't remember how many of you were around for that, but that was quite possibly the WORST release in MMO history (Mourning could likely take that award at this point - however I'm speaking of games that are still running) Horizons was figured to be the end-all-be-all of the MMO genre prior to it's release. Then one of the biggest "thuds" in MMO history happened. There was such an exodus of people from that game, well we know how they've filed a few times for bankruptcy and reorganized(lucky enough to find someone to pick them back up) Saga of Ryzom is having the same deal.
DnL has been talked about since Horizons - nearly the same time. At one point, DnL was considered vaperware as was Horizons (ie: 2001-02 timeframe), but obviously it's come A LONG ways.
I'll repeat that, at present, I have no immediate qualms with DnL or the DnL staff. Those that are so "needing" a new game and the fact that DnL is under possible financial pressure makes for a very volatile atmosphere. I really do not want to see this go up in flames like Mourning did. I followed Mourning for close to two years, and was one of the people who got "scammed" when they "released." I've read and followed DnL since before that time frame, as it has been in works before Mourning made much of a scene in the "development world.
I don't throw the term fanboi around as an insult. I realise some persons like to tag it as such. I don't think it is though; it's an accurate description of those who are rabidly excited about a game. That's good. games need those, especially games in development. As time has show though, literally, it's the fanboi's that usually lash back hardest when they realise how 'duped,' 'scammedm,' etc they were at the release of xxx game.
I hope that is a bit more substance for those that were writing me off as a "troll." I don't post often, at all. You can look at my registration date to figure that much out. I read daily, and lurk (whatever you like to term it) and saw the current hype regarding DnL.
maybe my first post on the thread came off a bit inflammatory, but like I said, some people blind themselves to things. It's best for them to keep an Open and clear view of the field, so they're not broad sided when that server shutdown comes in from the side and knocks them out. this doesn't pertain to DnL solely. These comments apply to any MMO in development or currently published.
this isnt an arguement but i just wanted to say that you should have said that in the first place
i would agree that it is annoying for people to not play in the beta even if they did get in, and instead whine on the forums. your point before seemed to be more along the lines of thinking the team couldnt do it and should stop. just to make sure i understand your position, you are hoping for DnL and their team and against the annoying complainers? cause if so then i think we might be more on teh same page. because i personally hope for this game but am annoyed with those who just lash out at it even though they dont play enough and are expecting too much content even though its still in beta.
If you guys want to pay to beta a game, then all the more power to you. I think your idiots, but you certainly have the right to be idiots.
How ever if the company doesn't have funding to complete the thing, the ethical thing to do would get another sponser/loan or sell there game to someone who has the funding to finish it, not to charge for an unfinshed game.

On behalf of everyone who is looking forward to this game, thank you for your opinion. You have changed no one's mind.
The bigger question is why this game, more than any other, is garnering so much hate? There are games coming out this month or next that arent ready either, but you dont see the kind of constant bashing on the other boards as you do here. Very strange imo.

Which ones? I don't know of any other mmorpg's launching this month.
The bigger question is why this game, more than any other, is garnering so much hate? There are games coming out this month or next that arent ready either, but you dont see the kind of constant bashing on the other boards as you do here. Very strange imo.
I don't have any hate for D&L. I was in fact until recently been looking forward to trying the game. Nor was my intent to "change" someones mind. I was just pointing out that the drvelopers do have other options if they find themselves in financial pressure and pointing out the ethical base of releasing a game before it is "complete." People will/have made up their own minds, I was just giving another point of veiw for people to consider, which is in large part the point of these forums.
However, I was already burned once with SWG being burned to play test a game for a company because they released the game 6 months to early and I don't choose to participate in a game that would release a game largely undone. Had I known at the time that SWG wasn't done I wouldn't of bought the game. Knowing the problems illustrated by SWG when trying to balance/create a game with an acitive player base I find it short sighted to want to recreate such a situation. There are certainly a lot of people whose sensibilities aren't bothered by this, but most people are.
I don't have any hate either all I keep saying is "hey everybody before you believe all the PR bull**** you should wait till the game gets some previews from some honest game site or they drop the NDA". There were some fans that sent the Mourning Devs 30 bucks also and look what happened there. Quite frankly I am starting o lump game developers right in there with used car salesmen and politicians as far as how much I trust them anymore. All care about is getting their hands on your wallet/credit card.
I dont know why people come on here and bash the game for being a paid beta.
If you so povo u cant afford it, dont come crying here. I think they should be allowed to charge for their work.
No other company has made a game this big and in depth before, if all of what they say is true, the game will be something special. They offer a service, hence people pay for their service.
If you dont want to pay for the BETA, or simply cant afford it then DONT! Just pay for it when its finally released properly next year. You are just trying to get something for nothing, even though it is still in BETA it is still their work, and so I for one dont mind paying for it.
Beta means you get to test it and see how it is before everyone else. So again, dont have a cry about, just wait till its released out of beta then sheesh.
yes!!! thats what i'm talking about!!! now mattmate has a good idea of what they are doing and what they have to do. i as well would not mind paying at all for beta.
Originally posted by mattmate I dont know why people come on here and bash the game for being a paid beta.
Because if enough people are willing to pay to play games unfinshed then that will become the industrial standard. The majority of producers will continue to release unfinished crap and the MMO market will continued to be flodded with low quality crap with development/producer teams who continuosly marginalise their player base.
If people are going to pay to play unfinished games I just want them to be aware that they are encouraging developers to continue to devlope games in this fashion all so they can play a game 6 months and leave because they are upset that the game never got fixed (which also has been the industrial standard).

It's not a question of afford, it's a matter of unethical game developers fleecing the sheep. The Devs are the ones trying to get something for nothing here.
The keyword here being BETA. We are aware its unfinished! Thats what BETA means. What do you want them to do?
"Here guys here is the full version all working, best of all....FOR FREE!!" sheesh give up. They have every right to charge for the BETA version of the software. This does not mean they will release the game officially only doing a half ass job on it. Again, thats where the term BETA comes into it. Its released knowing that it is not finished, if they want to charge for that, so be it!. Unfinished or not, thousands of man hours have been put into the game to get it to this point.
The good thing about charging for it is that it stops people who just want to see what its like, who are not interested in actually properly playing the game registering, downloading the client and being losers in game to people who actually want to play the game properly, this is not the say this doesnt happen in paid games aswell, but if people pay for a product they are generally more inclined to do things properly.
From the looks of it, the game already covers a large amount in the beta release, give the guys a fair go. You only need to take one look on the forums at dark and light.com to realize that heaps of people want and are trying to get into the beta. WHY? Cause they most likely want to check it out, see how it is. And if for that privlage they wish to charge a fee...so be it. People can still have fun in a BETA, which is most likely the goal for all gamers alike.
If not, then just dont pay, but you cant change anything by having a cry on forums about it. Reality is that enough people will pay for it. Me being one of them.
Mattmate again tells it how it is and i give him props for that. Also this is a SMALL team, a team that has risked a lot to try and bring a game up to be as good as it looks. They have been working on it for years and are still working on it, so when you say that they are just trying to get money or whatever, yes... they are trying to get money, because they have a very limited budget. If you are trying to compare the size of NPCube (makers of DnL) to Blizzard or some stupid crap like that then you are just a moron. Blizzard is a huge team that has been working on games for years upon years, while NPCube was made not too long ago for the main purpose of making DnL. So again i say dont put them at such high standards as the giant companies, instead as i have said over .. and over.. and over, look at it from their perspective, they NEED money to keep things rolling and are looking for dedicated people to help them out. So if you are not going to support them and instead bash them in their skulls for nothing they did to YOU in specific then just BE ... QUITE!
