I never started. Peer pressure sucks doesnt it. I would just throw away any in your house and fight the urge to go out and buy some.

On Time? On Target? Never Quit?

You gotta be pretty weak to start smoking due to peer pressure. I've been asked if I wanted to smoke lots of times and never once did I start. I just don't see what's so great about smoking. It just makes you look like a moron in my opinion.

There's a few things you gotta think about every time you smoke:

    1) Even cig' you've smoked takes away 5-7 mins of your life (excluding the time it takes to smoke)

    2) There's more than 2000 'bad things' in cigs'. (Can't think of a better way to word it)

    3) Even if you can't smell it, you stink like shit.

    4) It's so damn expensive.

    5) (Not really when smoking, but more when smoking after the mark where you should quit the cig') Your lungs bleeds for 5 secs.

These are based upon things people told me.

I could continue, but I can remember the rest of the list I made for myself. I can't guarantee you it will work as I haven't tried it myself. I can't see why I should stop just yet.

Just remember. Where there's will, there's a way. image

Nicotine is the single most addictive drug known to man (more addictive than crack-cocaine, heroine, etc) hence the fact that it's legal and taxed. The government spends 3% of the revenue it gains from smokers on anti-smoking campaigns telling them they should stop. There's something sick about that if you ask me.

Some people are happy to live their lives as slaves to a drug and tax-sinks to the government but you've obviously had enough, so here's my advice.

    1. Don't treat quitting like a big deal. Yes, you may well feel like a piece of shit for a few days (and in fact, you may not) but the world will continue to spin on it's axis despite your personal battle, and acting like a f**king drama queen won't solve anything. If you end up feeling so bad you can't stand it, look at it as the price you pay for being a drug addict who's becoming an ex-drug addict.

    2. Don't think "I'm one cigarette away from feeling better". Think "I'm one cigarette away from feeling like shit for the rest of my life".

    3. Do not replace smoking with anything else (patches, gum, alcohol, etc). This is the biggest mistake people make when they quit smoking. All you're doing when you replace smoking with something else is giving yourself a constant reminder of what you actually want to forget about.

    4. Addiction is a bitch. She will convince you that every cigarette you ever smoked tasted of sweet freshly-picked strawberries and made you feel like a million dollars. You know better, so pimp-slap that bitch down.

    5. Always remember how much you wanted to quit. Spend a whole day convincing yourself that the next cigarette that touches your lips will taste like the worst piece of shit you ever experienced, and you'll feel like the weakest loser in history. Because it will, and you will.

    6. Smoking does nothing to relieve stress. All it does is relieve a craving for nicotine that only exists because you smoke. You will have difficult periods in your life. That's part of life, and starting smoking again will just make those periods even worse.

    7. Prepare to have a lot more energy, and plan how you're going to use that energy.

    8. Drink a lot of water, frequently. Not as a replacement, but to clean your system out.

    9. When people ask you "How's quitting smoking going?" the answer isn't "It's going OK I guess", it's "I did it". The moment you smoked your last cigarette, you didn't embark on a mission to quit smoking, you quit. End of story.

    10. May the force be with you. Always.

I saw my dad die in front of my eyes. He was 49 and (supposedly) in perfect health. He had like 3% body fat. I was sitting talking to him, then he turned blue and convulsed.

    He died of a stroke.

5 minutes later I quite smoking (in seminary I smoked pipes then went to Middletons ..those little small cigars). I smoked about 2 middletons a day. Which is around 20 cigarettes. Seeing my father die was enough to quit cold turkey.

I went through hell that week; having to deal with the death of my father (since I was a priest then, they requested me to do his funeral. Imagine doing your father or mother's funeral). I also went through hell detoxing from those cigarettes. Complete hell. I wont lie to you.

But after about 3 weeks, I lost the "crave." And about 2 months I lost ALL forms of wanting it (when I lost the crave I would still want to smoke one in the car on long trips).

Its a little extreme and I hope no one has to experience that. But its enought to quit. My Dad smoked less than 20 cigarettes a day and he died at 49.

try cold turkey. Its the most "hellish" way to quit but the most successful. Dont do the patch...all you are doing is transferring the cigarette from your mouth to your arm.

    Facts:

About 1 out of every 5 deaths in the US can be attributed to tobacco products.
$72 billion was spent on tobacco related products by consumers in the U.S. in 1999.
Every eight seconds, someone in the world dies due to tobacco.
Every day about 2000 youths become daily smokers.
Every year cigarettes leave about 31,000 kids fatherless.
Every day about 4,400 kids age 12 to 17 try a cigarette for the first time.
Of current smokers in the U.S., 46,000 have lung cancer from smoking.

In 1999, one year after agreeing to stop billboard advertising, tobacco companies increased advertising spending by 33 percent in magazines with more than 15 percent youth readership.

In 1990, 72 million bottles of a popular mineral water were voluntarily recalled because of small traces of benzene. The smoke from one pack of unfiltered cigarettes has as much benzene as 169 bottles of the contaminated water.

In as little as 2 weeks nicotine changes the brains chemistry and addiction can begin.

In 2001, tobacco companies spent about $11 billion marketing their products. That's about $1.5 billion more than the year before.

In 1990, a tobacco company put together a plan to stop Coroners from listing tobacco as a cause of death on a death certificate.

Cigarette smoke contains 69 chemical compounds that are known cause cancer.

There are about 12,711,000 current and former smokers in the U.S. with a tobacco related disease in the.

There are about 5,412,000 current smokers with a tobacco related disease in the U.S.
1 out of 3 smokers are estimated to eventually die from a tobacco-related disease.
Of current smokers in the U.S., 1,273,000 have emphysema from smoking.
Over 50,000 people a year die from secondhand smoke in the US alone.
Cigarette smoke contains the radioactive isotope Polonium-210.

In 1989, millions of cases of imported fruit were banned after a small amount of cyanide was found in just two grapes. There's thirty-three times more cyanide in a single cigarette than was found in those two grapes.

An internal tobacco company marketing report from 1989 said quote "We believe that most of the strong, positive images for cigarettes and smoking are created by cinema and television."

In the mid 90's, a major tobacco company planned on boosting sales of their cigarettes by targeting a new consumer market: gays and homeless people. They called their plan Project Sub-Culture Urban Marketing. Also known as Project SCUM.

Cigarettes will eventually kill a third of the people who use them.
Tobacco signage is often placed at a child's eye level.
One tobacco company developed a genetically altered tobacco with twice the addictive nicotine of regular tobacco. They code-named it "Y-1."

In 1984, one tobacco company referred to new customers as "replacement smokers."
Over 80 percent of all adult smokers started smoking before they turned 18.
Tobacco companies make $1.8 billion from under age sales.
Pee contains urea. Some tobacco companies add urea to cigarettes.
Tobacco companies make a product that kills 440,000 Americans a year.
Tobacco companies make a product that kills 1,200 Americans a day.
    2,000 teens start smoking everyday.
Tobacco companies make a product that kills about 50 Americans each hour.
In the 1970s, tobacco companies started making light cigarettes by putting tiny holes in the filters to let extra air mix with the smoke. They found they could get low readings of toxic agents from FTC-type cigarette testing machines.

In 1980, a tobacco company considered looking at itself as a "drug company."
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.
Every 8 seconds, someone in the world dies from tobacco.
Since 1964 there have been 12 million tobacco related deaths in the U.S.
Smoking during pregnancy results in the deaths of about 1000 infants each year in the U.S.
70 percent of smokers want to quit. Only about 5 percent actually succeed every year.
The impact of nicotine is jacked up because tobacco companies add ammonia.
In the 1980s, tobacco companies started working on making fire-safe cigarettes. Ones that would be less likely to ignite furniture or clothing and cause fires. As of 2002, only one of the hundreds of U.S. cigarette brands uses fire safe technology, and cigarettes are still the number one cause of fire-related deaths.

Every year, 95 percent of people who try to stop smoking are not successful.
In the US, smoking causes about 445 new cases of lung cancer every day.
Tobacco kills more Americans than AIDS, drugs, homicides, fires, and auto accidents combined.
Cigarette smoke contains benzene, carbon monoxide, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide and polonium 210.

I just quit smoking 2 months ago and everyone will try and tell you how to quit and nothing will work until you face one fact: if you are having trouble quitting, it is because you have an addictive personality.

You can stop hanging around with smokers, in fact I recommend that because you shouldn't be subjected to second hand smoke; It can kill you. The trouble is you need to fill the addiction with a healthy addiction. I never considered myself to be a workout guy, I used to hate those type of people. I am now addicted to working out. I go the gym every single day, and life has improved dramatically.

I can smell better; this might not seem like a big deal until you smell your first REALLY fresh air, or just the way the road smells after a short rain. I feel like a kid again! You can try anything you want, but I quit cold turkey by going to the gym, making ALL my own meals (I don't eat fast food of any kind anymore) keeping your living space clean and perfectly tidy, spending time with loved ones. Basically become addicted to living life how it was meant to be lived, not sucking in smoke from a cancer stick.

I lost 20 pounds in 2 months, I have muscles now lol where I never had them before in my life. I look great and I feel fantastic. My self esteem has skyrocketed, sex is better, everything is better! Food tastes better, and I'm eating healthy.

Cigarettes are the devil. They hold good people back from being the people they could be. They cost you money, happiness and health. You might HATE the gym scara, you might hate the people who go there, but they are there because they know the secret to life. Exercise rewls and when you feel like you need a smoke, hit the gym or go outside and so something that is healthy. Hell clean your room, it makes you feel good lol it really does. Stop being the person the tobacco companies and mcdonalds and advertisers want you to be. Be the person you were meant to be.

Tobacco, fast food and drugs don't exist in the world unless men who want your money create them. And this might shock you to tears, but you need to cut down on video games too. I play 1 or 2 hours a night now because after doing all the things I said, and getting 8 hours sleep a night with a full time job and a gf, that's all there is time for.

It ain't easy to quit.  As far as I can tell the craving never really goes away entirely.

I've quit a few times for up to six months at a time.  My problem is that I have too many friends and family members who smoke.  So the cigarettes are always there in front of me.  I can't get away from it.  Eventually I always give in and pick one up and then I'm right back into it.

I would say if you can get through the first week you'll be through the worst of it.  But if you spend time around other smokers it's going to be a very, very difficult thing to not give in some day and start up again.

I switched to chewing tobacco thinking that if I could get out of the habit of lighting up it would help.  But it didn't really.  Although I've found that I can get by with a lot less chaw than cigarettes.  I used to smoke two packs a day.  Now I use chew and and one can lasts me several days.  I also breath easier but I think it's causing my teeth to shift alignment by messing up my gums.  But that could just be age getting the better of me.

Bottom line: There isn't any easy way to quit.

    I've quit...repeatedly.

Try to get your friends/family to quit with you or your chances are slim that you'll be able to stay off cigarettes.

Smoked for 5 years from age 16-21, about a pack a day of Marlboro reds, then stopped one night and have not smoked since, or desired to.

I was motivated to quit when I became more physically active, running and swimming primarily, after noticing I couldn't take deep breathes of air, that I required.  I also rationalized the insecure nature of needing the security of a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other when frequenting bars. Cigarette smoke stench on my clothes  was also something I became disgusted with.

I started and continued smoking as a peer pressure, experimental phase but never felt addicted. I think I was the first among my close friends to stop smoking. I don't have an addictive personality and can't relate to people who say they are unable to control personal behavior. I believe it simply boils down to wether you truly want to stop or not.

If you feel you need to trick yourself into stopping, then try becoming more physically active which should reveal the shortcomings of your body as a result of smoking and force you to quit. Surrounding yourself with people who are not smokers would help, if of course they allow you to be in their presence socially. I personally write off any female interests who smoke and don't hang out with people who do. A little reverse peer pressure can do the trick.

Lol, I was tempted to post a picture..... but, since everyone is all in superiority serious mode, I'll just give my small token of advice.

Stay away from the cigarettes.  Addiction is like a river the more water going down it the more wider the river gets slowly step down from the process.

I smoked a pack a day for 15 years and quit in 3 months time. This was 10 years ago and havent touched one since.

Here is how i did it.

1.Prepare yourself mentally to do this.

Other smokers will want to see you fail because they dont want to appear weak.Be ready for the offers of a cigarette when walking by them. The best way to combat this is to take the cigarette and say thanx then crush it in front of them and walk off.As expensive as it is getting they will horde the "precious" and NEVER offer you a cigarette again. So your actually doing yourself a favor 2 fold.Ensuring they wont offer you one and empowering yourself to be better than them.

2.Dont quit ALL at once this is a sure fire way to get back on the wagon.

Dont buy a carton buy 1 pack.Start off with smoking 5 a day for one week.So in the 1st week a total of 35 cigarettes. The next week smoke 4 a day.Already your smoking 7 less than you did the 1st week. This is all about controling your addiction at this point not letting it control you.The 3rd week 3 a day.The 4th week your down to 2 a day.
At this point it becomes difficult.Stay away from other smokers dont even talk to them. For the next 2 weeks smoke 2 a day.In the 7th week you will be smoking 1 cigarette a day.By the 8th week you will be wondering why you even bothered.

3.Dont buy the patch or the nicotine gums.Using my method you will be delivering LESS nicotine into your body than either the patch or the gums. Some people cut the patch into 4 pieces but i WANTED to smoke
and a patch wasnt going to cut it for me.

4.Going into the 9th week buy some gum to chew(not nicotine gum)and chew this stuff like you were a smoker.I went through about 4 to packs a day at one point but it was better than smoking.

The method i described worked for me but it was all about willpower and being better than the other smokers around me that wanted to see me fail.Everytime i heard them saying i couldnt quit it made me feel even more like doing it.Im telling you from 1st hand experience that they will be so determined to see you fail that it will become ridiculous.

I have now been smoke free for over 10 years.I never went back.My coworkers that thought i would fail STILL smoke.Think about how many they have smoked in 10 years. All the wasted money and the wasted time as well. They cant do anything without having tobacco come into it.

Smoking is a HOLLOW addiction. It is not like cocaine or heroin or even alchohol where you would get a high.Tobbacco gets ahold of you and doesnt let go and you dont even get high from it.

What i dont get is why marijuana is illegal while tobbacco wich is a PROVEN killer can be bought most anywhere. The govt even puts WARNING labels on the packs right next to the handy dandy tax stamp.

Good luck you can do this!!!

Anyone in the UK saw them adverts on help to quit smoking?

The one with the fag between the two fingers that are walking (meant to be a penis) and it gets smaller saying it can stop you from having children

And the ones with the fat coming out the end of the fag instead of ash, saying it clogs up heart or sumthing making it harder to pump :(

Saw them and i still can't quit.

It's like i wake up in the morning, in the first min i have a fag and then i chain smoke the rest of the day :(

Says all this about when u quit smoking :(

When you smoke, you get addicted to the nicotine in the cigarette. It’s a highly addictive drug so when you give up you will get withdrawal symptoms

    The symptoms

Increased appetite - likely to last more than ten weeks, affects 70%

Irritability and/or aggression - likely to last less than four weeks, it affects around 50% of people trying to give up.

Depression - less than four weeks, affects 60%

Restlessness - less than four weeks, affects 60%

Craving cigarettes - likely to last more than two weeks, affects 70%

Poor concentration - less than two weeks, affects 60%

Waking up in the night - less than one week, affects 25%

    Light-headedness - lasts less than 48 hours, affects 10%

the scary thing is is that non smokers come up to me at work (i work at the front desk of a hotel) and request non smoking cause they can smell it a mile away. i to them could you smell me then and every single time its oh your i smoker i couldnt tell.

you will quit when your ready in your mind. not a day before or after.

the bs about second hand smoke and the chemicals arg you all know that your breathing the same damn stuff normally that just in the air from natural pollutants. the dirrect inhale off a cig is bad for the person smoking that is true. cars, cows, and tons of factories and other stuff give out the same type of pollutants as cigs. cancer is natural in everyones body they are excelerated by nicotine true but its not the only friggin thing that excelerates the process.

when they give stats on people dieing from cancer in smoking adds they add anyone that might have been near smoking once in there lifetime so the numbers are inflated wrongly.

i deffend smoking for one reason as i will defend abortion ITS MY FING CHOICE TO SMOKE I AM NOT GOING TO BE CONTROLED BY SOME DAMN LAW MADE BY SOMEONE WHO MIGHT THINK THAT HIM WALKING BY ME WILL KILL HIM.

arg this is one of few topics that piss me off. like in davis, ca they tried passing a law saying that if i was smoking in my car with the windows down and my smoke moved by the air goes into anothers car they could sue me for indangering there life. this was like 4 years ago but damn people its ok to be in friggin gridelock traffic with exhaust flying into your car???? makes no sence
also davis, ca also has a law that its against the law to detonate a nuclear device who the hell is going to inforce that law??? from 100 miles away after its detonated???

if it was untanted tobacco like it was many many years ago its not that bad or addictive. its all the chems they add that are the worst for you.

im a curtious smoker though and ask or i will move away and smoke but come up with that weak ass caugh like a little crying baby and smokes in your face. ask nicely or shut up.::::20::::::28::

Actually the scary thing here is you are defending a addiction that actually causes cancer.Sure its your choice to smoke but its a nonsmokers BASIC RIGHT to breathe smoke free air. With all the pollutants in the air 1 less thing would be nice.

But hey if you want to defend a drug addiction that makes you smell bad, wastes a lot of time,is unattractive to the opposite sex, causes impotence, may give you cancer and is expensive then to each his own.

Just like a typical weak willed smoker you find an exscuse that will let you keep smoking. There is already a whole bunch of pollutants in the air so why bother?

Where i live the state employees pay 20% more than everyone else if they are smokers. Why should a nonsmoker pay for anothers personal choice to endanger themselves?

Smokers are on the decline and are becoming more recluse and embarrased every week.People get mad at employees who smoke want to know why?

Because they are drug addicts taking a break to nurse an addiction.IMHO you may as well be standing out in front of the building shooting up heroin.Give it up already and do yourself a favor.

arg this is one of few topics that piss me off. like in davis, ca they tried passing a law saying that if i was smoking in my car with the windows down and my smoke moved by the air goes into anothers car they could sue me for indangering there life. this was like 4 years ago but damn people its ok to be in friggin gridelock traffic with exhaust flying into your car???? makes no sence
also davis, ca also has a law that its against the law to detonate a nuclear device who the hell is going to inforce that law??? from 100 miles away after its detonated???
if it was untanted tobacco like it was many many years ago its not that bad or addictive. its all the chems they add that are the worst for you.
im a curtious smoker though and ask or i will move away and smoke but come up with that weak ass caugh like a little crying baby and smokes in your face. ask nicely or shut up.::::20::::::28::

I use to smoke in my teens ans early 20's. I went from Marlboro's and gradually worked my way down to fewer and lighter cigararettes. But even after that I still use to smoke one or two when I was out drinking. I never really gave them up until a very good friend of mine developed lung cancer. After seeing her turn in to a living corpes before she died, that pretty much did it for me. She just turned 32 when she died.

the reason i do say these things though is people say its bad for you really no shit!!! it causes cancer NO IT HELPS EXCELERATE THE CHANCE OF CANCER SPREADING. so it takes off the bad ugly years of my life oh no. my grandma started smoking at the age of 17 shes 72 now and NO FING CANCER. SHE QUIT COLD TURKEY 4 years ago. and if i wasnt smoking cigs there would be bullets flying and idiots all day lol.

oh and one last thing cars are bad for you so you should quit driving. airplanes polut and are bad you could die flying in one you shouldnt fly. everyone has a 5 percent chance of haveing a sezure in there life time so no one should have a DL. there is always a chance of something bad happening and killing someone today in a fluk accident quit trying to say that its bad makes you smell and everything when non smokers cant tell im a smoker and im right infront of them.

Wow ive always known that smokers were filled with self loathing and just about as smart as a doorknob but thanx for proving it.

I imagine that your shortened breathe and the inability to breathe the proper amount of oxygen has contributed to your decrease in brain cells.

Your amount of self hatred is astonishing.

You smoke to "piss people off" but the only person you affect is your self.Every time you smoke to" piss people off" you make yourself look pathetic.

I mean really whats the point?

Got some news for ya.Nobody cares if you smoke and want to kill yourself. What they do care about at your place of employment is how much more time you waste than everyone else due to the fact you are a drug addict.

Yeah your such a rebel.Way to give in to the huge megacorporate structure of tobacco.Yeah its so rebellious to be part of the whole corporate environment of smoking. The companies that produce such deadly products love having customers like you.

The kind that blindly defend what they do as a "personal choice" all the while living in denial of the cancer it causes and saying its a "right".

Your life is going up in smoke and you dont even comprehend the way you are manipulated by corporate tobacco.

Hey have fun "pissing people off" by harming yourself.Sounds like a pathetic life if you ask me.
