You should find it a more advanced version of WoW with a much more mature community. You really don't have to look too hard to find screenshots of it....

It is almost 100% different than GW and about 65% different than WoW. Not in a bad way, but you might be overwhelmed. EverQuest2 has a "trias of the Isles" demo/trial out. I think you can play it as long as you want for free, but you never get off the newbie island and can't go past lvl 6 or 7, but it is enough to see if you want to keep playing.

If you do decide to continue, you can use the same account name and pass as the demo you played and continue that same character you created.

1st, it would be more accurate to say that World of Warcraft was more like Everquest, since EQ1 came first by a very long time. And because EQ2 came from that background, you could say the same thing there, too.

2nd, it depends on what you enjoyed about WoW and GW. I have a hard time seeing anyone who enjoyed GuildWars enjoying EQ or EQ2. You'll get about 99% less l33t-speak in either EQ game than the others you mentioned. The attitude of both is more "serious fantasy". The crafting is vastly deeper than either GW or WoW. The combat isn't as "energetic", if you will, it's more measured.

EQ2 and WoW are both based off of EQ1 so the game will feel similar. You'll find the community a bit more mature and the game has a LOT more depth and it's also more complex. It's got a slightly steeper learning curve than WoW but it will also give you enjoyment in the long term whereas WoW kind of runs out of steam by the level 56 or so. And is pretty much DOA by level 60.

EQ2's only really glaring lack was PVP and the new expasion coming out should rectify that.

If you enjoyed WOW and GuildWars odds are you'll enjoy EQ2 just as much, if not more. As long as you didn't enjoy them for the ability to gank other players.

EQ2 is different from WoW in many ways.

First, in WOW it is fairly easy to solo all classes from 1-60. In EQ2 you will find the game is designed more around group encounters. Of course there are advantages to grouping in WOW as well but I have found that for levelling efficency no more than 3 characters in a WOW group is optimal. In EQ to group is the norm where as in WOW it is not the exception but less required.

The graphics in EQ 2 are very nice but also very different from WOW. WOW graphics are cartoonish where EQ2 has attempted to be more realistic.  I have fond that for many people more realistic graphics do not necessarily equate to a better gaming experience. Personally, I like both sets of graphics but they are very different. You can find quite a few examples here on MMORPG site section for EQ2.

IMOP the game play in WOW is much more fluid than EQ2. I believe the game designers of EQ2 attempted to fix some of the combat and gameplay issues from the original EQ and in doing so made some gameplay decisions that do not always work.  There have been many changes since I last played EQ2 so some of the items that annoyed me may no longer exist.

I definitely recommend you try the free EQ2 Trials demo. That should give you a good idea of whether or not it is the game for you.

EQ and WoW are alike, WoW being like a modernised easier accessible Everquest. EQ2 is a completely different game. To me it was too restrictive and linear in design. You can see that SOE has put alot of money into the development of the game. A complex game system, and visually stunning. But a big difference from EQ and WoW is, that in those games you are free to go and to do what you feel like in the world. You don't want to group or do quests? Just don't. You can still advance and get normal gear and explore the world. In EQ2 quests are forced on players via the game system, that controls your access to game content by quests. You want access to more than the 2 basic game zones? Enter dungeons? You will have to do quests and all important quests can only be done with a group. On top of that access to dungeons is only allowed when you are in a group of at least a certain number of people of a certain level range and none of these players has accessed that dungeons in the last x hours. If you like the freedom to explore and do quests you like and not because its the only way to get to the following level... oops I mean zone, than stay away from this game.

I've yet to try WoW, not that I dislike Blizzard or anything, just wish there was some form of trial.  I've played UO, SWG, AO, MxO, AC2 & probably a few others I've completly forgotten about.  I'm on my 3rd day of the Trial of the Isle and so far I believe I will enjoy the actual game.  I can't comment much on the freedom of exploration in the game for I am limited to an Island.  image

I can say the graphics are very nice and I'm running them on high currently, still fooling around with the individual settings.  I will say the game does require a somewhat higher-end system but nothing to extravagent (if you desire above high performance and/or balanced).  The combat is entertaining, character movements are impressive.  Haven't done any real quests so I can niether comment on the need for grouping or the repetitiveness of the quests themselves but I'm willing to spend the $20 + monthly subscription for however long to make my decision whether I will stick with this game or not.  I am still curious how exactly skills/attributes work.  Will update in the next few days after I purchase the game tonight.
