I too despise EA for the UO fiasco.
Redtiger ur a f*$!*in noobie. UO sucks now, its really quite simple.....the best game ever has gone to shit in the last few years, game over-and btw this game will never be back so all u old schoolers out there just play the free shards to mess around because nobody is gonna make a copy of old school UO when they can make a lame consensual pvp game for all the 12 yr old whiners out there. think about it...whats more important to these programmers and such, making money or making a handful of dope pvpers happy copying the old UO days of 97-98??
RIght ON! 97 - 99 were the golden years. I quit shortly after they introduced color-coded alignment changes and that funny bug where you could dye anything pitch black was all the rage.
Seems I quit just in time. I saw the changes comingnerfing-mastering skills in an hour-etc.. I'd be curious to see someone post all the changes that obliterated the game that was the legendary "UO". Maybe designers could learn something if they read why classic players are so outraged.
Any takers?
Permadeath and environmental challenges are the next great step in the evolution of MMORPGs. Only through true adversity will one feel accomplished. Only in truly knowing you can die will true adversity present itself.

Back in my day... we had to walk to school barefoot in the snow uphill...both ways!!
couldn't agree more about the whining. And i've heard similar about Garriot trying to start up his own firm too, and basically focusing on Lineage. I know that they;ve brought his Lord British character back into UO although I have no idea who is taking it over. And the UO/UXO whinefest about resources is sort of pointless since the team that's working on UXO wouldn't have probably been working on UO all that much at this point.
After reading this thread and seeing the complete LACK of maturity in it I now remember why I quit UO.......
All you old school UO fans need to stop by www.metropolisshard.com if you want to have a good time. During peek hours more than 350 players is the norm. Metropolis is rated number 2 on the UO top 200 site and it is the number 1 pre uor shard out there.

Easy there, Cowboy, making a nice, ignorant generalization about the players on this thread who enjoyed classic UO being immature doesn't reflect well on you.
I enjoyed classic more. The timeline through which the changes occurred I am not exact on, true. But it did change, and my opinion is for the worse . . .

I didn't realize there were so many old skoolerz out there like me. I think UO was kick ass in 99-01 when I played, PRE-TRAMMEL!! I used to dream about playing UO when I wasn't.
It all started to fall when the tamer wave and the mage PvP wave came, later it was mage/healer/wrestler-PvPer. I played on Great Lakes. Trammel and AoS brought it even further down. I went back about 6 months ago, after AoS came out, and I noticed that my GM Tamer/Mage/Really Kick ass main char SUCKED! I was killed very quickly- eventually i found out why. They apparently made magic armor that nearly negates all your skills! Unless you get the scroll things that add 5-20 % to a skill so taming can be like 120%! It was freaken retarted. Only the rich and the experienced (with good armor) could get them. They would sell for millions. I think it's pathetic. And notice one thing- in the rennaisance period, PEOPLE DON'T DYE THEIR HAIR! Especially bright blue. They should have never made that possible. The whole game became corrupt and eventually, the younger "Immature" players screwed it up even more. There was no "Old game hospitality" anymore.
The game just flat out sucked. I don't think UXO is going to be any better.
P.S. What kind of an MMORPG has ACTION FIGURES?? I'm glad I quit now, but I miss old skool UO soo much. I'm just waiting for Lineage 2. Looks like a great game.
When I played D&D we all had action figures! We had lead hand-painted figures that we made -- and customised -- to look like our role-playing character.
Also, I just joined UO and I am having so much fun! Only thing is I really have not played with other people just yet!
(I know we aren't supposed to talk UXO here, but I get a woody every time I see new screenshots. I am playing UO on my ThinkPad in 2D and I am afraid that I will need a new machine.)
That said, I heard all kinds of horror stories about getting whacked right out of the gates! I thought I would get totally PvP'd and all that other stuff but not yet!
But I have been keeping pretty much to myself.
This is a quote I took from uocheats.com, this is why I quit UO.
. UPDATED LAST MONTH!
. UPDATED THIS MONTH!
I AM SO GLAD I QUIT NOW! But I miss the UO I was addicted to!
Well, the best news about Ultima X: Odyssey is that its starting from ground Zero. That is what made so many people really excited about getting involved in Horizons -- because you got to begin something! Funny this is that if you go onto eBay right now, you will see that there are already cheats and so forth available on eBay -- and Horizons has been out for only a short time, too! UO is pretty bad as well! So, I am looking at being on the ground floor of the UXO thing, and I have joined the MMORPG contest and the Game Banshee contest.
As an aside, I am even a member of UO -- and really enjoying it -- just because I think I might get some sort of advantage on getting into UXO. Call me dork, call me loser.
Dork.....loser! jk...
I actually feel very similar. There's some novelty to starting a new mmorpg like UXO that hasn't been tampered with at all. Its a clean slate that will not remain that way.
btw, i entered the beta contests you linked up there silverado. I was already in mmorpg.com's, but gamebanshee's was actually kind of fun. who would've thought taking latin could prove to be so beneficial.
anyway, game on.

Thanks. There is so much different here in UXO. It doesn't seem to me to be Yet Another MMORPG. I mean, this is the kind of game for someone who wants to be a hero or a Questing Knight or part of a real D&D-type campaign wherein the good-neutral-evil decision really matters and you are what you do.
I was kind of disappointed -- as an AD&D geek from the 80s -- how little alignment matters in UO -- and since I am a Palladin on UO, I was surprised that I could really join a guild and so forth with some pretty dodgy folks without any blowback.
So, I am not the kind of player who is going to spend my entire gaming experience farming or gardening or fashioning swords on an anvil or even sailing. I don't need to be crafting and when I was dungeon master, I didn't spend all this time making my players have to fashion this or that -- we would find time to get together and go kill stuff and figure stuff out and be warriors or do magic or pick pockets.
Hell, I don't think any of us ever had horses. Whether there are or are not mounts won't make or break it for me.
Meh, Uxo is shaping up to be an excellent game. I despise the approach they are taking towards PvP. Not because it's consentual, but because it's just not enough. The systems they have in place for dueling and gvg look amazing, but where's the group pvp outside of guilds? How do you play cooperatively with your friends off all guilds or solo whatever versus another group? Without this, it will be the games only foreseen downfall so far. As for it's PvE systems. It looks damn fine! Questing shall be a wonder in itself, the races look great{But I want my DWARVES!!!}, the world is looking nice. Kinda cartoony, but it'll do I guess...
I'm really looking forward to it. I'm sure they'll see the light about the pvp once it hit's the shelves...
