Going back to your roots?

Every time I come on here and look over the threads there are people asking for more and more and more from games and getting unsatisfied with what MMORPGs can do.

So... why not go back to your roots and get some tabletop play going?

If you can afford $10+ a month, plus a box fee you can afford books that'll last you a lifetime and the minimal effort to get some friends together to play, or over IRC or a specialist RPG client if you can't do that.

There's no limitations then, no borders on your imagination or what you can do other than what you can negotiate with the GM.

MMOs are easier of course, just fire it up and its always there waiting for you, but these frustrations people express show that they still seem to have a long way to go yet.

So, what's stopping you?

You must be smoking crack to make a comment like that. Coordinating schedules of 4-6 working adults, with families and children, to enjoy an overarching campaign lasting multiple sits is about as "minimal effort" as building a bridge to the moon.

There are a million reasons why some people don't tabletop instead of online.  I can tell you from my experience, that I have a solid base of friends, and we tabletop when we can, however, that can be far and few between.  Why?

We live far away from each other.  At least a 2hr commute.  One friend has children and a busy schedule with ball games, and activities.  Another friend has busy schedule with a career that keeps her moving about the country.

It isnt from wanting to get together to tabletop, we just simply cannot do this on a regular basis. Now we do have a campaign going that has been going for two years now, but when you go a few weeks before the next session, it takes awhile to get caught back up in it, so its slow going.

Now for the second part.  Online gaming is something that I am thrilled about.  I can get my friends together on any given night, without commuting every single day. I can visit with them often, and go on adventures with them.   There is no long distance fee, just a monthly affordable fee.  I find in todays busy world, Online gaming is the best way to communicate with busy friends.  I visit my friends on a weekly basis, and see them online on a day by day basis. How cool is that?

Now with all the competition and genre of Mmorp out there today, there is simply no toleration for a really bad game. And although I think too many people whine, there are far more people that will just put there foot down and say "I wont tolerate this, fix it"   When online games are a big industry today, you will see more and more people asking for more and more.
